Banned Android Apps May Soon Have a Place to Go

By Jared Newman

Despite the Android Market being more “open” than the iPhone App Store – there’s no approval process to get in — Google still bans Android apps on occasion, including emulators, legally-questionable music services, tethering apps and one-click root apps. Soon, these banned apps may have an app store to call their own.

Koushik Dutta, a developer of the popular CyanogenMod firmware for Android, is tossing around the idea of a black market app store — my words, not his – filled with apps that will only work on rooted Android phones.

“We also need an app store for apps that are getting shut down for no good reason, other than carrier, or some random corporation doesn’t like it,” Dutta wrote on Google+.

A “rooted” Android phone is roughly the equivalent of a jailbroken iPhone, allowing the user to tweak the phone in ways the manufacturer doesn’t allow out of the box. (One big difference, though: Android phones can install apps from outside the Android Market without rooting, while iPhones are restricted to the App Store.) Rooted users often install CyanogenMod, a fairly clean version of Android that removes any bloatware included with the phone.

Dutta hopes a CyanogenMod app store would cater to these users while also providing some revenue, which he says would go toward hardware costs and server costs for future versions.

I like the idea of an underground Android app store, but only if it’s done right. Because illicit apps can sometimes come with malware or adware, the CyanogenMod team should implement an approval process — something that even Google doesn’t do — just to weed out harmful software. With a low volume of exclusive, useful apps that are safe to use, the CyanogenMod team could be onto something.

1.Yes (mobilism.org)
2.You cant download from Android Market on PC, if you will use mobilism or any other such site then you will be downloading the .apk on your PC first and then transferring to your phone.Or you could use apk manager like me that allows you to install downloaded apps on your pc to your phone directly(without transferring)

Congratulations :)
A Small Unboxing might make you feel proud :looking:

Need some good games now
Start from small ones:
- Angry Birds (AM: Free)
- Angry Birds Seasons (AM: Free)
- Angry Birds Rio (AM: Free)
- Cut The Rope (Mobilism)

is there any website that hosts paid content for free?
forum.mobilism.org

Paid content for free.

Download the .apk files and install on your device. You can also download their Mobilism Market which wont work the same way as Android Market does (as it only shows you the contents while the files are still hosted on a 3rd party server) ... but it'll make your job browsing for contents on Mobilism a hell lot easier.

And is there any other way to download 100MB games to your pc first then install it on your device later?
100MB? You can download 1000MB (1GB) Games and install later on your phone.

If a game (say a 3D game) requires 1GB SD Files, you can simply download those files separately (they are mostly paid apps' contents so obviously download from Mobilism) and then copy them to your SDCard later to their relative location (which should be listed at the place from where you download those).

P.S. Check HERE. Although dont download from the links i posted. I am just posting this to let you know some Names which you might be interested in.

Here's yet another exceedingly n00b question.

With AirDroid I can connect my PC with my phone and use the basic features. i.e. send/receive texts directly from the pc, import export files and stuff.

BUT.. it uses WiFi

IS there an app that allows the same experience over the internet?

Say I connect through GPRS and have the same Airdroid experience? texts, files and such?

Advise, would you kindly?

Thank You

It's a trial version.

This is a Trial version with 24 hours of time to evalutate the full version, after this you have to buy to use all features or you can still use the demo version. The full version activation is immediate and uses google market in-app billing.

Use it for 24 hours after that it will ask you about buying or using demo (I think) otherwise ask the developer they usually reply fast.

Calling ALL HTC Fanboys

A friend of mine is in need of a Weather Widget. The catch is ... it should look 100% same (more or less) as HTC Sense'.
