No need to root. Just download .apk files of games and apps and install them

Just put a tick at SETTINGS -> Applications -> Unknown Sources

Do what rehan51 says...

Only a few applications may require root to apply patches...

Btw.. Rooting is good and fun...you must do it...;)

Rooting is only needed to make changes to /system and some folders in /data (to edit hosts file to remove ads), otherwise you don't need it.

Remember:
Rooting != jailbreak
longpress ALL THE THINGS!

Bootloader corrupted is simply hard brick... I don't think it's recoverable.. When it gets corrupted, the display wont even turn ON... Phone doesn't respond to anything.. Its dead like a brick..

anyone who charged you 1000 for it has just ripped you...

Btw.. You could have asked for help here.. There are many Samsung Android gurus here...;)

What method were you using ? The only time when you can get your bootloader corrupted is when you are flashing another bootloader which isn't even a part of the rooting process. All you need to do is flash cf-root kernel via Odin which can't do any harm, even if you mess up this process you can still boot into download mode and flash again.

Only a bootloader corruption can brick this phone and a brick means that your phone becomes a paper weight and the reaction is not reversible.

@JAYZZY
For games you should visit Samsung Apps as well. Currently they have games like Dead Space 2, Samurai 2: Vengeance, Riptide GP, Sprinkle, Trial X and Asphalt 6 (GS2 only) available for free. I know these games are available from other places as well. But why go for pirated when legit is available for free.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!

Samsung Androids are virtually unbrickable because of Download Mode. Basically, the only way you can fuck up your phone is if you check the "Clear ESN" box in Odin. Otherwise you're never gonna mess it up. Power + vol down.

Use Heimdall instead of Odin, it's better

Why is that?

What gives Heimdall an edge over Odin?

I have seen people praising countless times but NONE of them gives a valid (technical) reason for it to be better.

I've used both. Both have same functionality. I dont see any thing which would give Heimdall an edge over Odin.

Bhai! Cyanogen Mod would be 80% Developer Support for Xperia Ray.

What more could you possibly want?

P.S. Its an Apps & Games Thread. You should've posted this in other Official Android thread :p

"Odin is generally unreliable and only runs on Windows systems. Furthermore, Odin is leaked Samsung software that is not freely available or well understood by the community." - From the Heimdall website.

Heimdall is open source and cross-platform, which makes it more reliable since the developers and the community actually know exactly what it does. It also has a cleaner interface.

That said, I've never used Heimdall because when I used to flash my old Spica, it wasn't released and on my Galaxy Nexus, even though there is a Download Mode, I know enough to manually flash through fastboot...which is the official method.

actually if you break your bootloader you break your download mode= no Odin.
but Jayzzy got ripped, his kernel must have messed up and the solution would have been a simple reflash.

^by having a failure while flashing it such as purposely pulling out your battery during the process.

Odin Generally Unreliable?
Leaked Official Software?
Not freely available?
Not well understood by community?
These are childish reasons posted on that website.

Heimdall's ONLY advantages are that its Open Source, and it supported on Multiple Platforms. Other than that, i dont think it has any sort of "edge" over Odin.
Both does the same thing, in the same way.

I've used both. Never felt the need to specifically use Heimdall ... so i wont say "Its better" as compared to Odin.

Cant you use the builtin vcf exporter of HTC contact application?

Alternatives:
  • You can use SD Backup from Android Market. Latest version is 1.3. You can backup your contacts to vcf Format (Visiting Card) and also your SMS'. However, there is a very small problem with these softwares and that is, you cannot CHOOSE (between SIM & Phone) which contacts to backup. To rectify it, pull out your Sim card & Then take backup of phone Contacts ONLY. And then delete Phone Contacts and take SIM Contacts' Backup only. In this way, you'd be able to capture both Phone's & SIM's contacts in Separate vcf Files, as well as the pictures you might've saved with Phone's contacts.
  • You can also use Go Contacts application from Android Market which has the same utility built in.
