Sony to disallow resell or renting of PlayStation games after initially supporting it - Neowin

Sony started off as the good guy against Microsoft's Xbox One by announcing support for game-lending and resale at the E3 2013 conference back in June. No-DRM was also a key point of Sony's PS4 presentation. However, Sony has updated the Software Usage Terms and backtracked on the claims it had made earlier. The terms can be read in entirety over here, the points in question are as follows:

6.3. You must not lease, rent, sublicense, publish, modify, adapt, or translate any portion of the Software.

7.1. You must not resell either Disc-based Software or Software Downloads, unless expressly authorised by us and, if the publisher is another company, additionally by the publisher.

Since Sony does not mention PlayStation 4 in particular, it could also be applicable to the existing PlayStation consoles.
Gamers who had been upset with Microsoft's DRM policies voiced support for Sony's PlayStation 4 after the E3 announcement which led to Microsoft reversing on some their policies. Now, we would have to wait for Sony to release a statement regarding the sudden change in terms.
If this is indeed true, then Sony just trolled everyone who pre-ordered the PS4

Nothing to see here. Such clauses have existed in the previous ToS, and are only applicable to the commercial sector.

Sony's EULA is for all of its existing Playstation platforms, which includes the PSV, PS3, and PS4. Are PSV and PS3 owners prohibited from selling their games? No, they aren't. It's common sense.

I'm pretty sure I've seen clause 6.3 written for almost all software license agreements.

7.1 seems a bit dodgy. Sony openly said they're not gonna BLOCK used game sales, that kinda translates to authorizing everyone to resell the software. Unless of course the publisher un-authorizes explicitly. Let's see what happens when it's out.

EULA doesn't mean much as long as they don't ban used games on a system level

This has been present in the TOS for quite a while. News site thought it was good enough for sensationalist title and hence ran away with this news.

In reality, this means nothing.

So, you're saying you actually READ the ToS? You must be the first person on the internet to do so!

I never actually read the terms, but I somehow know that I have read this one at many places, even on pirated disks :p

I agreed to the new EULA a couple of days ago on my PS3. So I'm guessing I can't sell my PS3 games and buy used games anymore? Oh wait, no I can still do that.

Also:

These type of sensational articles always attract the morons, don't they?

you should never agree to anything before reading it, next time you're installing something on your computer, take out the 30 mins or so necessary to read the ToS thoroughly.

The height of desperation becomes evident when a thread belonging in the Playstation Section gets posted in General Gaming in order to attract more trolls. Oh wait, that happens in the PS Section anyways. Carry on.
