[h=2]Tekken 7's first new character might be an Arab fighter, depending on reaction[/h]

ne of the new fighters coming in Tekken 7, the Unreal Engine 4-powered fighting game from Bandai Namco, might be an Arab fighter, game director Katsuhiro Harada announced on Facebook today. His inclusion in the game depends, however, on the reaction of the Middle Eastern fighting game community.

Harada posted concept art of the unnamed Arab fighter on Facebook today with a lengthy note about the character's background and inspiration. The Tekken team has been considering the inclusion of an Arab character since 2008, Harada said, but with little exposure to regional culture and clothing, they couldn't "fully design it back then." That's changed in recent years, with Bandai Namco holding special events in Dubai and the team visiting Saudi Arabia.

Now Harada and team are turning to the Arab community for feedback about their proposed character.

"If the Tekken fan community, especially those in the Middle Eastern area, end up liking this character, I would like to feature this character in the game," Harada said. "On the other hand, if this character is not received well by the Middle Eastern Tekken fan community members, there is a possibility that the character will be considerably changed or letting go of the idea of featuring this character in the game.
"The development team likes this design and think that this character is a cool Arab fighter, but if there is something in particular to mention, please do let us know."

There's a good reason Harada is soliciting this kind of feedback. In 2012, the Tekken team drew criticism for a Tekken Tag Tournament 2 stage set in Saudi Arabia that featured the Arabic script for Allah. When it was brought to his attention, Harada pleaded ignorance and promised to quickly change the stage.

The Tekken team sought similar early character feedback last year for Tekken Revolution. Harada and team proposed a number of new characters, including a salmon, a woman sumo wrestler and a version of Paul Phoenix transformed into "a very cute girl." Fans ultimately chose Eliza, a woman vampire with a narcolepsy problem.

Harada points out in today's Facebook post that the Arab character may not wind up appearing in the game, regardless of the reaction. "This is just a concept sketch," he said. "Nothing has been set in stone, so please do not jump the gun and think everything is already fixed and decided."

Bandai Namco announced Tekken 7 at the Evo 2014 fighting game championships. Harada further detailed the forthcoming fighting game at San Diego Comic-Con.

Harada tweeted today about the feedback he received from fans on the character:

"I’m surprised at the number of feedback and reactions (on the Facebook, Twitter, Internet media) about Arab character.Whew..The open discussion is not easy way."

"But It is glad Because We can get many people’s opinion & We can advance game development safely. We got many positive feedback from Arab Tekken fan community"

"But we have to be careful with that. We need to read their opinion for several more days."

[h=2]Meet Catalina, the newest character in Tekken's lineup[/h]

Katsuhiro Harada, the longtime producer of the Tekken series, revealed a new character for Tekken 7 during a live-streamed event from Tokyo Game Show.

Her name is Catalina, and she's described as a "sassy-mouthed talker" of Latin American ancestry. Harada said she "will be vocal in game."

Here's an uncropped look at her concept art.

No official gameplay footage was shown in the stream, viewable here (the 11:57 mark is where Catalina is announced.) She will join another unannounced character at location tests in October. In August, Harada posted on Facebook some concept art of a new Arab character.

Tekken 7, the first numbered new release in the fighting series since 2007, was announced at EVO 2014. At Comic-Con 2014, Harada said the game will feature "a very detailed background story," that concludes the Mishima clan saga.

[h=2]What's new in Tekken 7[/h]

The arcade version of Tekken 7 is currently being location tested in Japan, offering a slew of details about what's coming in the next fighting game from Bandai Namco's Tekken Team. While the game is still unfinished, location tests are providing plenty of new information about how Tekken 7 will play.

The current roster in Tekken 7's location test features the following returning fighters: Alisa, Asuka, Bryan, Dragunov, Feng, Heihachi, Hwoarang, Kazuya, King, Lars, Law, Leo, Lili, Paul, Steve and Xiaoyu. Two new characters, Katarina — not Catalina, as previously reported — and Claudio are also playable.

The location test also reveals two new additions to Tekken 7's fighting mechanics: Rage Arts and Power Crush.

Rage Arts are powerful attacks that become available when a player's health is low — the fighter and their health bar will glow red when the move is ready. Designed to give a fighter a last ditch attempt at a comeback, Rage Arts are powerful super moves that, should they connect, deliver heavy damage with some cinematic flair. King's Rage Art, for example, starts with a punch and finishes with a body slam. Kazuya's strings together a punch and an uppercut, launching his opponent into the air, and ends with his eye laser attack.

Power Crush moves are special attacks that won't have their animation interrupted if the player is hit mid-move. The player executing a Power Crush move can still take damage during the move's animation, but their animation will apparently finish.

In an example shown in a flier for the Tekken 7 location test, King is shown doing a shoulder charge at Dragunov, who connects with a punch but doesn't interfere with the Power Move's completed execution.

Visually, Tekken 7 is showing a number of enhancements over Tekken 6 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Some stages have impressive lighting effects and particle effects abound; counter hits are now illustrated by a shower of bright sparks. Some players are reporting framerate drops in the location test, but Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada points out on Twitter that the game's graphics power performance is only at 60 percent of what the Tekken Team is shooting for. Improvements still to come, Harada said, include character lighting, refined textures and skin shaders.

There's some small amount of character customization in Tekken 7 currently. Players can outfit fighters like Asuka with a giant hammer and Dragunov with claw hands. Paul can wear an ridiculously high stack of hair and Lili can ramp up her goth style with dark makeup and batwings.

Bandai Namco is livestreaming some Tekken 7 location test gameplay from arcades in Osaka and Tokyo via Niconico this weekend, but if you'd like a look at some early video captured offscreen, we've embedded a playlist below of some footage.

Tekken 7 is slated to hit arcades in Japan sometime next year.

As I feared, the overall game still seems to be stuck in the Tekken 5 era, but now its with prettier visuals and lolsupermoves.

[h=2]Nasty reaction to Tekken's J-pop character gets her yanked from U.S. release (Update)[/h]

Tekken 7 revealed its newest character over the weekend, and when Western gamers reacted harshly to her, the game's lead designer responded in kind, even implying she and other characters would not be in the game's North American version.
First, the character: Lucky Chloe, a teenager with headphones, cat ears, cat paws, knee socks and a miniskirt.

The look is straight from the Japan pop-idol playbook, and was harshly and profanely criticized in this NeoGAF thread, either for being too typical, too weird, or both.

Katsuhiro Harada, alerted to the negative reaction, had one of his own regarding Western gamers' tastes: "Hello small world. I'll make muscular & skinhead character for you."

When someone on Twitter asked for the option to delete characters from the Tekken 7 lineup, Harada told them to "calm down and Don't worry. That character are East Asia and Europe ‘Exclusive.'"
Asked if he was really serious, Harada said he really was:

Katsuhiro Harada @Harada_TEKKEN Follow
I'm always serious. If you don't need = I don't release them. If you need = I'll release. That's all. RT @jdevilb I hope you are not serious

We're checking with a Namco representative just in case, and will update this story with any reply we receive.

Update: Harada has commented again, framing this as a matter of community preference regarding the entire roster, not just a single character. "It's YOUR community's choice. I'm just hearing the demand & request," he said. "Anyway, We are so busy because Tekken 7 development is not finish, we are working on arcade version first. I think we have planning time for this issue after development."

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
