The Wolf Among Us

The Wolf Among Us is an interactive story-based game developed by Telltale Games, best known for their multiple GOTY winner The Walking Dead: The Game. It is set in a world where characters from different fairy tales and folklore are living in our world and blending in with the common folks.

Now, I LOVED the premise. I'm sure everyone would recognize the majority, if not all of the characters in the game as they are a part of stories you grew up with. And seeing them being depicted in a real, gritty world was great. The atmosphere was beautifully crafted too. It gave the feeling of neo-noir movies and went perfectly with the story. And the soundtrack, oh boy it was great and really complemented the tone and atmosphere of the game. All this just reeled me in from the start.

The story follows Sheriff Bigby Wolf (The big bad wolf) trying to solve a murder mystery. He is accompanied by Snow White, who is the assistant to interim mayor. Along the way, you meet tons of familiar characters like Beauty and The beast, the woodsman, mermaid etc. All of them had good to great voice acting, which really brought their characters to life in the world of this game.

Now, Bigby wolf was AWESOME. He was a genuine badass. It was so thrilling playing as him, especially when things got ugly because he could do some real damage to anyone who wronged him. The gameplay was minimal, like you would expect in a game like this. Just point and click for the most part. However, there were some added directorial QTEs and trigger lock-on, which made fighting or chasing scenes really intense. AND brutal. Man, you really felt like a beast ripping apart your foes.

The graphics were cell shaded comic book/graphic novel goodness and it really made you feel like you're in one. Texture detail was improved from The Walking Dead BUT I would have still loved more detail.

Being a murder mystery, I was intrigued by the story and it kept me really interested in it. I just couldn't wait to see what happens next. Problem with it for me was that it continuously kept on building the stake levels, that this is way bigger and deeper than imagined etc, and when I finally reached the reveal, it was a letdown. That's why I don't like when detective stories do this as they usually fail to deliver the hype they themselves create. Also, the episodes felt too short, would have loved more length to them.

Overall, I was really hooked by this game. Will definitely do a re-play of it and try different choices.

The Walking Dead: Season Two

The Walking Dead: Season Two is a followup to the critically acclaimed Season One developed by Telltale games. It follows Clementine as the protagonist now after the events of the previous season. She is now a bit grown up and more tougher then we last saw her.

We find a new group to survive with and just like everything in The Walking Dead universe, things turn to shit quickly and difficult choices have to made etc etc, all that stuff is back that made the first part so gripping. The survival aspect is even stronger now here.

The crux of the first season was the relationship of Lee and Clementine, which was sorely missing here and there was nothing to really compensate for that, making the overall experience less emotional. That isn't to say there wasn't any emotional experiences here, because there definitely were some heart wrenching moments and feels sprinkled throughout the five episodes.

The control scheme was mostly the same with a few additions from The wolf among us like directional QTEs and trigger lock-on. And this definitely helped create more tense escape sequences.

Now I replayed Season 1 before playing this and wised up to the choices, or rather the illusion of choice because when I first played it, I felt like my choices were making real differences but doing different stuff when playing the second time revealed that not to be true. And it was the same case here too. Apart from the ending, choices don't really change the story all that much. What you really get most of the times is a few different dialogues. And sometimes your choice is completely overlooked, which was really disappointing. It's ultimately an experience giving you the option to see how would you choose in a situation like this, and that's satisfying in its own way. But if the choices really did mattered more, that would have been a great thing.

Overall, even if it wasn't upto the same height as the first season, it was a still great experience. Had gripping and tense moments and was emotionally exhausting.

Life is Strange

Life is Strange is an adventure, narrative heavy, point-to-click type game developed by DontNod studios, the guys who created the flawed yet enjoyable game 'Remember Me'. It follows an art school student Max who one day finds out that she has the ability to reverse time.

If you have played any of the Telltale recent releases like The Walking Dead game or The Wolf Among Us etc, you'll feel right at home here. It plays in a similar style with dialogues having choices and whatever you chose influences the story and conversations to some extent. The fun thing here is that you can reverse time on the fly and it adds for a great new mechanic for games of this genre. I experimented with choices a lot due to this mechanic and it was really fun. And it was also the plot point to some real feels.

Now, when I first saw the trailer of this game, I had no idea that I will enjoy it to the extent I did. Not in a million years. The game simply excelled at immersing me into its world. The atmosphere was gorgeous. The soundtrack was utterly beautiful. The art style was splendid and gave the game a warm feeling. And aside from that, many of the characters themselves were good to great and many were developed in a fine way that you actually cared for them. Chloe stole the show for me though. She was just awesome. The protagonist herself was great to play as. She was nerdy-ish cute, caring (my version was atleast) and fun.

Sure the story sometimes stumbled, especially in the final episode which had a somewhat disappointing ending scenario. The voice acting wasn't always perfect and low res textures combined with often horrible lip syncing made for awkward scenes. But I wasn't too bothered with these flaws, which normally would be more effective. The game just simply reeled me in so tight, I didn't wanted to let go, and that is something that happens very rarely. Kudos to Dontnod for that.

All in all, loved the game. Can't wait for the sequel.

^^ 4th episode was the best one for me. In the end it was all about CHLOE.
Yeah. AH CHLOE!

What did you choose in the end?
Spoiler: show
As much as I wanted to be with Chloe, I couldn't bring myself to sacrifice a whole town, so I sacrificed Chloe. And MAN, the FEELS of the ending with that song, so perfectly executed.

Well I kinda cheated there. First time, I wasn't able to save her and as soon as she fell, I restarted the last checkpoint and was able to save her. :p

I chose to save here cause basically, from like the beginning of the game, your top priority was Chloe so I couldn't bring myself to just let all the gameplay (and ofcourse her) go in vain [emoji23] [emoji23]

True but the sacrifice to save Chloe just seemed toooo sadistic for me. :p
They should have given us more choices in the end.

Finished off SOMA. Not much of a horror game, but fantastic story. A lot to think about on the nature of consciousness and being.

Batman: Arkham Knight
I finished Batman: Arkham Knight yesterday and I loved it. I just wish that it ran at a solid 60 FPS, but alas. I had to play the entire 30 hours at 30 FPS, but I didn't mind it too much, considering there was no other choice.

The things I totally loved:

+The game gives us the choice to pursue what kind of missions we'd like to do and in what order (apart from some end-game Riddler/ManBat/Penguin missions).
+The main missions are constructed really well. I enjoyed it from start to finish.
+The new combat moves, blocking, tag team combat, finishers are excellent. There are some new enemy variants which you can't simply punch head on, so some thinking is required during combat if you wish to build up the combo level.
+People actually dissed the Batmobile even after release, but personally I enjoyed the integration of Batmobile with the missions. The best thing I liked was how destructible everything was. Spot a pillar? Drive through it, it'll crumble. See those railings? Just drive over them.
+The Batmobile also had a number of useful features, such as acting like an electrical generator, pulling and breaking objects in the environment, and so on. The Tank mode was also well created, and I never got fed up of killing those drone tanks. The Tank's controls were extremely fluid (playing via PS3 joypad).
+The city has incredible detail everywhere. Rain effects, particle effects, everything is just so incredible. The city actually has multiple levels, seamlessly integrated, such as the skies, rooftops, overhead trains, streets, underground areas etc.
+Voice acting was excellent.
+Facial animations were well constructed. Not only that but body language also complemented the words spoken.
+Side missions by the Riddler, ManBat, and FireFly were good.
+I felt that apart from a very slight overuse of the Batmobile, there wasn't any overuse of gameplay mechanics. And I am completely okay with the overuse of Batmobile as well. So gameplay never felt boring (strictly personal opinion).
+Excellent use of Joker (the Joker duet was hilarious).

Negatives:

-Boss fights were underwhelming. They required little to no strategy.
-Game ran like shit on my GTX970.
-Main story was dragged on by a teeny tiny amount by the end.
-Too many unskippable logos at the intro (use the -nologo command in shortcut to circumvent this).
-Operation Knightfall requires way too much grinding IMO. (just YouTube it after game ends).
-Harley cameo too small ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Finished telltale's game of thrones episodes 1-6 (all) complete on the ps4

well i got this pretty damn cheap on those flash sales just 2.50$ for the entire season :D yes that cheap, it was a good tale, although i could see resemblances to the characters and their parts from the show just name changed etc you know that kinda feel and their position in it. the game lives up to the name of game of thrones as their are a number of deaths some in your hand and some not so much.

the graphics and character designs well they could be a bit nicer but it was kinda awful to see them lol not so bad but could had been better

the end episode season 6 was left a bit like a cliff hanger and by the looks season 2 is coming as per telltale's so will have to wait for that i guess now

Rating: 7.5/10

Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void

"My Life for Aiur."

AH Starcraft 2, my favourite RTS franchise. I never knew or got into the first Starcraft but when I played wings of liberty back when it was released, I got immediately hooked to the story and the gameplay. Been waiting a long time for this last part of the trilogy, and the franchise, to come out, and finally got enough time to replay the previous two parts and finish this all in one go.

Legacy of the Void is a protoss focused campaign like how Wings of Liberty was for Terrans and Heart of the Swarm was for the Zerg. And it is about time we finally get to play as them.

Things I liked:

  • The cinematic storytelling returned better than ever. The story continues from where Heart of the Swarm left off, with Amon's threat getting bigger and graver. It all had this Mass Effect feel to it and considering it is my favourite game (trilogy) of all time, I was really digging and enjoying the story. Old faces return, alliances are created, armies are forged, all that good shit.
  • Blizzard once again showed that they are the gods of CGI cut scenes. From that epic opening scene to various others throughout the game, they were really a sight to behold. And not only that, the in-game cutscenes were pretty great as well.
  • The Protagonist: Artanis. I didn't really knew much about him but I immediately liked him. He was your usual young leader type character but his execution was good enough that you felt like a leader yourself when playing the game.
  • The side characters were pretty good and varying. And it was great conversing with them between missions as each had different views about their kind and factions and it just gave you a great insight to how protoss think of each other.
  • Like in the previous parts, good to great voice acting, making characters more interesting.
  • Best soundtrack in the trilogy hand down. It was so great.
  • A pretty well rounded conclusion to a great story. Sure I wanted more closure, as with all the endings, but what I got was still great.
  • The gameplay design was really great. Almost all of the missions required you to create different types of units to properly succeed instead of spamming one or two unit types, and I liked this forceful diversity.
  • The Spear of Adun mechanic was a great add-on. Tons of abilities that you could experiment with in each mission and they were great and fun to use. Also, because of it, every bonus objective had more weight to it since finishing them would give you more resources to use Adun's abilities. This resulted in me trying to finish all the bonus objectives first in each mission.
  • Each unit type changes were really great as well. As the game progresses, you open up new types of the unit and can choose and experiment in different missions.

Things I didn't liked:

  • While the game graphics aren't bad or anything, they look almost the same like they did 5 years ago when Wings of Liberty came out. I mean it would have been nice to have some big improvement over them.
  • Majority of the missions had a real same-y feeling. They got too monotonous. The structure was almost the same i.e main target needs to be destroyed but has this many points that needs to be taken out first etc etc.
  • Story does get cheesy or bit heavy handed at times, which was the issue in previous two parts as well. Small nitpick on my part since I love it regardless.

All in all, I had a real blast re-playing the previous parts again and finally playing this. Was a great couple of days and really creates the momentum to enjoy this epic galactic tale. Starcraft 2 is easily my favourite RTS of all time, and really, there is no other RTS that focuses so much on its campaign and I applaud Blizzard for putting so much effort into it. Wings of Liberty remains my favourite part overall.

As always, when something great ends, a layer of sadness is present, and I will miss this franchise, but at the same time I'm glad it ended on a high not cause too many games/franchises screw up their endings.

9/10
