I personally have researched in this field, so I can comprehend the kind of achievement this is ... !

Something I've always said: The Future is Google !

The efforts of a team of scientists, hired by the famous Google X Labs, have been successful in the direction of crating the first artificial brain, capable of learning from its own experience.

Rather famous for inventing the self-driving cars and for the Google Project Glass (augmented reality glasses), the scientists of Google X Labs are currently working on an new, highly-ambitious project, that attempts to create a virtual replica of the human brain, capable of learning.

In order to reach their goal, the Google researchers have created an artificial neural network, based on a processing machine that has 16,000 interconnected processors and underpinned by a specialized experimental software. The prototype that resulted was then connected to the network and let run free on the internet, while the researchers team monitored the results and its behavior.

Among others, during the experiment the neural network learned how to identify cat pictures, accurately extracted from a collection of over 10 billion miniatures created using Youtube videos. The results seem to support the biologists’ theories that suggest that the brain’s neurons have a natural ability to identify specific objects.

What is really remarkable is that the scientists haven’t introduced any information into the neural network, without suggesting it what to find. The system independently invented the “concept of cat,” without any information coming from outside.

In the first instance, the machines capable of learning can be used in the search engine field, improving the relevance and accuracy of the results provided for the semantic searches – when the users are basically asking questions in the search engine, receiving relevant responses for the context, instead of words used as web search query.

Improvements can also be brought to the translation algorithms, voice recognition systems, translating conversation from one language to another and face recognition systems.

okay two things:

- "Concept of Cat" seems like a great name for that geek indie rock band Ive always fantasized forming about ;)

- Learning computers have been around for a long time, wat this article fails to explain is how the machine learns abt the cat? More importantly, how can anything just invent some concept and oh bingo it fits the criteria we had set... its like a blind man trying to guess wat someones thinking 20000 miles away... maybe this machines capable of reading minds!! OPEN THE POD BAY DOOR HAL!!!!

^Yeah that article feels vague. Not much explained, just describes about the results.

What I believe, as the data was extracted from youtube videos. It must have formed the concept from the description from the vids or the content of the vid, just like we form a concept. Just like how a kid learns, you tell it that its a cat, he learns from others around him how to grab a glass of water and how to drink water from it. You must have noticed that. No?

^^ lets suppose this machine was shown say 2 million videos, or in machine terms fed 8 million mbs of data... it scoured em all, much like indexing... and then when a picture was shown of a cat (without telling it wat it was) it correctly ID'd it from its databanks or watever.

My take on all of it is this: we now have a publicly accesible VERY powerful image recog tool right from google's search page (google images; its been a blessing for finding out those random hotties I keep runing into at the chive ;)). Now however, we've got something that recognizes videos from its existing collection of data... like if you upload or show it a vid of something w 4 legs a tail, clawing at curtains and playing pianos it'll go Cat... if it woofs and runs after frisbees then dog and so on and so forth. Thats vid recog AFA I understand...

Agreed to that, thats why I said the article is vague.

Face detection and image recog are a thing of past, most certainly a machine fuel with 16,000 processors should be capable of performing advanced tasks. This may not be the best example to showcase the power of this machine. Or maybe its not only learning from visual aspect but also from auditory responses?

What Human thinks can change into Reality!
But, ofcourse 16,000 processors can do alot more than just recognizing a cat's image, thou its harsh to say that it ain't any achievement becoz indexing through that much data and answering the question correctly is good but those scientists should have put the brain to a pressure test to actually reveal the GOD's power

visual auditory etc etc... all that matters to IT rite now is matching which strings of 1s and 0s matches with the required one. simple. No opinions, likes or dislike. it will never not show a clip just coz IT wasnt feeling like showing :p
