I have played all DMCs - seen the anime and read the manga as well - and I can tell you, this DmC is the most artistically superior game out of the lot from a few game play videos alone. The old DMCs BLOW this regard. They are just...horrible games, artistically. The enemy designs, the locations, everything. Where DMC really shone was the game play and that was pretty much a hit and miss - mostly a miss - with DMC2 and DMC 4's Dante section. It's Nero that was DMC4's highlight. Dante sucked through and through in the fourth installment.

The story was never DMCs' strong suit to begin with. The series hit its pinnacle with the third one that had a good story, but Vergil had as much of a personality as things under my finger nails, and Dante is not a Picasso's painting variant either. Both of them are Inuyasha rip offs and a bunch of retards at that. People need to SEE the manga or anime to know what the hell I'm even talking about. It's a literal copy paste on so many fronts.

This DmC is actually trying to give them individual personality and the art style is absolutely amazing. Since I have read demonic lore, I can tell you, this "Mirror World" is absolutely SPOT ON. The art style is breath taking as it's literally showing the 'inverted' aspect of the demon world. To praise the previous DMCs so much and to put this down on art style and characterization...I don't know what to say other than it must be an acquired taste.
Well everyone has their own opinion so I'd respect yours. But...lets not talk about the Manga/Anime for a bit and lets shove aside the Novel as well. What DMC started as was a video game...and a damn good one. What makes THIS particular game amazing is not its story but the game play, I think i consider myself a DMC fan...but i dont play DMC just for the sake of skimming through story mode. DMC has always been and is about mastering its complex fighting style...its about executing stylish combos with timely precision all in its 60 FPS glory.

Apart from game play...lets talk about story. I agree with the story in the new DMC more thought out, i am not saying that i like the story but atleast its thought out unlike the older DMCs where just trying to understand the timeline of the game was a challenge itself...so the new DMC wins in that aspect...but then again its only the first game of the reboot.

Art style, i actually like the older DMC style, it was Gothic, punk, rock with a bit of a Japanese touch and i like it better. But this again is to a players preference. I liked the selection of weapons that the older DMCs have...All devil arms were once demons but now have taken the form of a weapon...i like the concept and their uniqueness... I loved Nero's sword...i think it was called the red queen...motor bike accelerator with fuel injected blade..who could'a thought of that?!... but then again this is all on the gamer's preference so i wont get into that.

But heres the part that i disagree with the most....old Dante and Virgil didn't have personalities??? WHAT?!?...if they didnt have personalities they wouldnt be few of the most celebrated video game characters of all time. I think you should rethink that one because that one actually made me laugh.

To be honest the new Dante to me is Twilight's Edward on steroids...and the new Virgil is a fruitcake...

Exhibit A :

The new DmC is fun to play...ill give it that, but its only a matter of time before people discover how shallow it is compared to its predecessors The new DmC does nothing new that the old DMC hasnt done before...from the combat to the combos to the special moves to even some of the weapons...its all been done before... and its just a matter of time before people wake up and realize that its not even worth calling a Devil may cry game...its could have easily been just another action game...its too easy, too shallow...not DMC.

I wonder what @Black Basara has to say about this.

The thing is that you've played all of the 4 older DMC games but you've only seen screenshots of this one or played a small demo.Dismissing such a promising game based on so little experience with it is a mistake.

Guys, at least this one has promising boss battles. The boss battle was really fun and i enjoyed it immensely. The rest of the game can't really be judged from a simple gameplay demo. The area was so short that it barely took us 10 mins at max. I have played all four DmC games, i don't really mind this new direction. I just hope it holds to it's promise and offers a new direction in the DMC universe. At least, i won't be the abomination that was DMC 2.

Old DMC was Gothic? I hope to god you are joking. Ever read Edger Alan Poe's work? That is pure, unadulterated Gothic genre. The New DmC is much more on this line than the previous ones, which are a complete joke in this regard.

Please explain how they had personalities other than being Inuyasha's cheap knock offs? As far as the Twilight and fruit cake references go, then Dante is NOTHING like Edward from any angle, as unlike you I have read all Twilight novels. And Vergil is dressed up like a straight laced aristocratic fellow in a formal attire that is a lot realistic than their hilarious, and downright cartoonish theme-park outfits in the previous games.

@Black Basara is quite the loon. You hear that JB, you loon?

I've been through the demo atleast 10 times...where i am coming from is that it stops being fun after a while and the combos become stale, the gameplay too easy and the moves limited.....one thing about DMC was that it was NEVER easy...plus it took skill to be good at DMC....with this one, its effortless to be good...i am hitting SSS combos like 90% of the time by spamming almost the same moves with little variation.

everything is so dumbed down to make this game accessable is that its not fun anymore.

As a whole...I am not dissing the game...if you've read my first post after the demo.....i like it...i can accept its new direction. But game play wise...its just not worth calling a DMC title.

I just have a different opinion...I dont like the new dante or the new virgil...I prefer the old DMC. I hope they do justice to DMC later on...

Meaning daddy in this dmc is/was an Angel not a demon. They hinted towards it very early too. Remember the Angel wallpaper?
i told this way back on the 3rd or 4th page ! no one reads here stuff anymore. even @Chandoo "sigh"

although daddy is demon sparda and mommy is an angel !

thus we get a mummy/daddy DANTE ! yup, true story

I am not asking you to like them nor do I have anything against your opinions, but don't make unrealistic statements on Gothic genre or Twilight references, as both of them are purely false.

I don't really care about Gothic or not...or their authentic boundaries or classification... I've never read a twilight novel or watched any of the movies for more then 20 mins....all i know is that these characters are weak, Dante never had to use obscenity to sound cocky or cool...nor did he introduced himself everywhere he went like he had a point to prove.... and virgil was never this ...happy...if that's the word to use....afterall its only a video game....lets see how it eventually turns out.

Tried the demo last night. Impressions:

- Looks great, visually. The lighting is one element that always stands out in Ninja Theory's games. Animations and, more importantly, their transitions into one another (really important for a hack n slash game) are pretty smooth.
- Frame rate is solid for the most part, and even though this is a 30fps game, NT has done a commendable job with the input latency. It feels just about as fast-paced and responsive as Bayonetta and earlier DMC games. The trade-off is worth it, I'd say.
- The default button layout was a bit weird for me. The first thing I did was map the dodge button to Triangle (Y on the X360) and the basic attack button to Square (X on the X360).
- The dodge mechanic works pretty well, although sometimes the camera gets displaced because of it during crowded situations.
- Those shape-shifting environments also looked pretty cool. There's a lot more potential here for platforming than there ever was in a DMC game before.
- The boss fight was, at the very least, more dynamic than the ones we've seen in previous DMC games. Not as entertaining or involving as Bayonetta's boss fights, however.

"Fuck you"
"FUCK YOU"
"Fuck YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"

Great stuf :p
Haha that's just the kind of crazy pre-boss fight banter that some of the recent DMC games have lacked. Nice to see the new Dante and his foes are well-versed in the art of arrogant trash talk :p

Yea hybrid he is just like the previous Dante but Angelic & his dad namely Sparda should be the Angel instead of mom, well it will be interesting to see what they decide.

- - - Updated - - -

No they actually very specifically state it in the demo itself, DmC Dante's father was a demon, (same old Sparda) but his mother was an Angel (unlike "old" dante whose mother was supposedly a human), that's the only distinction.
Hmm..interesting. Though the focus is on his Angelic lineage here.

DmC impressions:

I played both versions, on 360 and PS3. The PS3 runs like garbage and i'm not surprised still it doesn't have that "60 fps" feel.

The combat is fine but it's not DMC. There's isn't much impact when you hit the enemies like you feel in previous DMC games besides not adding "Lock on" and assigning two keys for dodge is really stupid, weapon switching doesn't feel smooth and has some input lag. The combos are pretty easy it took me couple of minutes just to come up with chain combos in ariel just mash "Osiris" and you can stay in air. Ebony and Ivory are just pathetic and they don't do enough damage.

What i seriously like was charge ricochet shots it is fun hitting multiple enemies in combos. The style meter is way too lenient and i played all the difficulties level and neither of them felt challenging. The enemies are way too easy and there designs are so stupid compare to previous DMC games.
The platforming is ridiculous and scripted i wished NT would give priority to gameplay first, it feels unpolished and needs more improvement.

As far as cutscenes are concerned i didn't like it, the dialogue delivery was underwhelming and story about how Sparda was mugged by some demons gave me laugh. In previous DMC Sparda felt like some legendary badass demon.

Over all decent stylish action game, the combos are easy to execute and it caters the casual gamers easily. This might be NT's best game has to offer but still it doesn't have DMC "DNA". I'm going back to play DMC HD COLLECTION now.

Laters.

NT is known for making games that run like garbage ... this may be the best game they have to offer but calling it DMC wouldnt be doing justice to the game or the franchise... this game could have easily be named "dude with the sword that kills monster" ...the main character could have easily been called "phill" or something.

Doesnt feel like a DMC game one bit...

Black Basara did you check how pointless Devil trigger is in this game?...its like they just put it there for a sake of having it.

I wish they had platinum games make a DMC reboot ...cant wait for Rising!...as i have a pretty good idea that DmC would be mediocre...
Recently i blew the dirt off my DMC collection too...gona play it till rising comes or maybe till i try the retail version of DmC... i really hope NT improves the gameplay and performance on the PS3.

DMC1 had gothic architecture in enviroment not this DmC. If you are discussing DMC story in depth then thats what DMC isn't about it was always the gameplay first and DMC3 vergil is million times badass than this douche.

Isn't dodge performed simply by pressing the Square button (X on the X360) + the direction you want to dodge in?

Also, I think the lack of a lock-on button is more of a design choice. NT probably didn't like the idea of lettings players spray gunfire on enemies from a distance with pinpoint accuracy. Rather, they wanted to emphasize using guns during juggles. Besides, the auto-targeting system seemed to work reasonably well.

The platforming is ridiculous and scripted i wished NT would give priority to gameplay first, it feels unpolished and needs more improvement.
It's a good change of pace from the non-stop hack n slash in previous DMC games. The platforming may be scripted, but its random occurrence during gameplay makes it exciting. I'm hoping there are segments later on where you're engaged in combat while simultaneously having to worry about shape-shifting platforms.

The DMC franchise had got kind of stale, imo. DMC4, in particular, didn't bring anything significantly new to the table. The franchise is desperately in need of a good shakeup, and DmC is doing just that.

This

I really needed to see some change. Let's wait and see how it turns out instead of judging the full game by a single demo.

As much as i welcome the platforming sequences, i want solid action too...thats what the devil may cry series was good for. To be honest i found it lacking in that department...and that kinda overshadows all the other stuff that DmC does right....

about dodging...A dodge was performed while locking on an enemy...tilt the analog in left or right direction and press X.

Even dodging in the old DMC took skill and precision, in this new alteration though...you are pretty much invincible during a dodge by just pressing a single button....the evasion area is ridiculas too.
