^ Exactly.

The intent to port the game to PC was already there. Namco was only trying to build some hype, and at the same time gauge the level of interest.

They openly denied any PC version in April 2011. Then a thread started in official forums which led to a petition signed by 90,000 unique users. After that TotalBiscuit(a famous PC commentator) did a video commentary about why Dark Souls should be on PC which got 6 lac hits. And resulted in a successful campaign.

This is how it all happened.

Here is the famous video. A must watch for consolers who are not familiar with PC gaming culture.

I have GTA4, Street Fighter 4, Dirt 2, Dirt 3, HALO 2 and some other legit GFWL titles and I know they are a pain to use with un-skiappable automatic updates and long matchmaking queues.
Funny thing is some people here are too stupid to realize that some of those titles are available on Steam as well, despite supporting 'GFWL'. This not being on Steam is not as issue (which is yet to be confirmed btw), as much as it supporting a much inferior mode of online play is, and Steamworks isn't the only other option. But like I said, its still worth getting legit if GFWL doesn't fuck it up. Its wildly inconsistent on a per game basis so I'd proceed with caution.

They saw money in this so they went for it. You guys didn't make anyone do anything, all you did is show the publisher that they can make a lil more cash
Very self-contradictory what you just said. It's very simple, cause and effect. By making a petition to bring Dark Souls to the PC, fans gave them CAUSE to take an initiative. The EFFECT of which was Dark Souls being announced for PC. The worst they did was do their market research for them, see even my friend here agrees

at the same time gauge the level of interest.
Would they have considered doing this if no one had shown interest? Maybe, maybe not but it certainly didn't hurt their case.

Update: Namco Bandai has provided additional details about the Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition.

PC players will be able to explore a new chapter known as Artorias of the Abyss. According to Namco, this features new areas, new enemies and new bosses including the Dark Knight Artorias.

The game will also include an enhanced PVP mode, "allowing players to more closely assemble battles against one another online."

You ignored what preceded the petition itself. A statement issued by a Namco administrator clearly depicts that the intention to do a port was already there:

There is always possibilities to have games adapted on PC and the good news is that Dark Souls is not a 100% typical Console game so the adaptation is possible. Now to make things happen, let's say the demand has to be properly done. Someone to make a successful petition?
In Joystiq's own words:

Petitions come and petitions go, but when an employee of Namco Bandai suggests Dark Souls could get ported to PC with a few thousand signatures, we take notice.

So you're saying the petition was in fact completely responsible for this port? Isn't that what I just said? Glad to see we're still on the same page.

No, I'm saying the exact opposite. The petition was merely an excuse Namco was looking for in order to bring the game to PC. Heck, what publisher asks for a petition this bluntly?

We already know the PhyreEngine is PC-compatible. Cost associated with porting are next to none. This one was a no-brainer if you ask me.

@CT bro, can you name a single PC game ever published by NAMCO BANDAI?? And why all of a sudden they were interested in a PC port??
And if Port was ready, why they are taking so much time to release it?

Karachi.
Few extra bosses does not mean that the game will be released 8 to 9 months after release on consoles.

What is apparent is that petition was started.
It gained significant signatures.
Developer noticed it. Asks the community to keep signing.
Enough "buyers" signed and hence game port profit feasibility increased.
Game officially announced by devs.

I don't see how a console only company would develop a huge game like this for PC, unless a petition was started + guaranteed support from users was gained.

But then, what if they hadn't gotten the response they were looking for? What then?

They'd still have brought the game over to PC, simply because it costs a lot less to port (not even a port in the first place). Even if a 1000 PC gamers had bought it, it would have turned out a profit. Though, the additional content is probably a result of the petition.

And honestly, do you really believe each and every one of the individuals who signed that petition are going to acquire it legit? lol

The whole idea of solely basing a corporate decision on an internet petition (which may or may not gather the attention of the intended target audience) is strange to begin with.

Read the Namco site admin's statement. It's quite apparent that the decision to do a PC version was already made.

I've seen a large number of petitions signed for RDR. Is it coming to PC? Not a chance.

Yeah one of the biggest replies this rumor was getting was that it will not be a PC port since keyboard and mouse will not be able to get that controls that a joypad has. Or that it will be mandatory for joypad to be included for PC.
