If you want to go for a bridge then this is no doubt a great camera, some people might actually suggest the Canon SX50 HS or 40HS, but if i were you i'd not go for those since they're relatively more expensive with more or less the same specs you'll be getting in the Nikon P510.

And now this is rather URGENT but i need help with buying a camera too since i've got to get one by Wednesday afternoon.
So not much time for me.

Search this thread. I made a list for cameras in 30k-ish budget a while back.

I've lost count of the number of times I've said that. If only you guys would go through the whole thread first. ._________.

How would you guys compare Nikon D5100 and Canon 550D?
Which one has cheaper lenses? Canon or Nikon?
What's the current market price of the 550D?
Nikon D3100 is around 45k mark and D5100 is around 51k. Is the 6k extra worth it? I mean what's the major difference between the two in terms of picture quality?

Go for the Canon if you wanna do videos. Nikon's videos suck bawls. Otherwise, they're pretty much the same. The D5100 slightly edges the 550D in terms of picture quality and noise levels. At the end of the day, its up to you, whichever one you prefer. I went the Nikon route cause it just felt 'right' in my hands.
As for lenses, Canon and Nikon both price their lenses similarly, so theres no difference there.
And yes, go for the D5100 if you can spend that extra 6k.

DO U NEED A DSLR???
Spoiler: show

yar in real life tests n useage ... the difference is so minute ... all depends how a picture is developed ... if u shoot in raw or not ... if someone has to shoot in jpeg then i think he should buy any point n shoot those will take better JPEGs than DSLR ... but if u r using a DSLR n u dnt shoot RAW then u should be killed :)
about the two camera on paper n in laboratory tests ... over all from image quality dynamic range high iso performance ... d5100 edges out slightly 550D ... why cause d5100 has newer sensor ... n nikon uses sony sensors n apply in camera processing things giving better RAW pictures (just compare d5100 with sony Alpha 65 n ull come to know how bad that sensor is in actual n how nikon using their awesome expeed 2 processor made same sensor best APSC sensor)

since DSLRs r not cameras ... they r systems ... never buy a camera always see ur future plans how far ur willing to go ... n cheap lenses well u can buy cheapest lenses ie sigma n tamron lowend lenses but then dnt complain for image quality ... on one side we buy a dslr cause we want better image quality n then we buy third class lenses making that camera worse than a mobile camera even ...

if u want an honest opinion if u cant buy decent lenses then dnt come to DSLRs ... but if u have plans for upgrades ... then see which focal lengths u use mostly ... what is ur style of photography ... ru a photoshop editior/retoucher or a genuine photographer ...
like i have just 4 lenses ... i dnt shoot portraits that much ... i also dnt shoot birds also ... so i have cheapest best image quality lenses out there (50mm 1.8f and 70-300 IS USM) ... i mainly shoot landscape ... so i spent my most money on best landscape lenses ... Tokina 11-16mm and Rokinon 8mm Fisheye ... from image quality point of view both r outstanding ... but here again i saw best value for money ... i could have bought canon 16-35 f2.8L (more than 2lac lens) or canon 8-11 fishseye lens (also more than 1.5lac lens) but i got almost similar image quality at much cheaper price ...

so keep one thing in mind ... either go for image quality (DSLR+Lenses) or just be happy with a much more than average image quality (Canon HS50SX a 50x zoom bridge camera costing just 45k) n trust me with cheap lenses my 60D gives more poor result than my office canon HS50SX ... so now shoot ur question again if u still wana go for DSLRs

okay now if u do need a dslr ... n ur willing to spend money also ... then for starters i think canon is a better start ... in APSC range canon gives much cheaper value for money ... why ?? cause it has autofocus motor in it ... which nikon only gives in d7000 n above (a stupid marketing thing) ...
but again ... if u want to buy cheap lenses then dnt complain keh my camera focuses slower than my friend who has same camera but different lens ...

bottomline

find ur self ist what is ur field of photography ... get any DSLR with above average lens for that field n keep just average lenses in other focal lengths n u will be happy for rest of ur life ...

What's the price of a 550D? Shophive lists it at 60k. If its anywhere near that price then i'll definitely go for the D5100 because i can't afford that much right now.

Thanks for the reply btw. :)

First of all thank you babar bhai for such a detailed reply.

Well i think i should get a DSLR now because i've had a Sony Nex-3 for about 3-4 months now. If i don't get a dslr i'll just stick with it.

Since the nex-3 can shoot RAW, i actually haven't shot a single picture in jpeg from the day i bought the nex-3.

As for the lenses, i am willing to spent on them. I am not saying that i will get the cheapest lenses without taking the picture quality into account.

I think this is the right time for me to get a DSLR because i can afford it right now and i have sufficient experience with the nex-3.

I'll be getting one next month inshALLAH. Shophive priced the 550D at 60k which is above my budget. Is that price authentic?

Once again thanks to both of you for such detailed replies :wink2:

yar no problem ...
actually its more like a trend these days that everyone who has 50-70k he goes n buy a DSLR without realizing he is choosing his way of life ... its an expensive hobby ... once in a brand ull have to stick with it unless u have enough money to switch (just like shifting to another city with a new job :p)

Spoiler: show
choice of camera mainly depends what type of photography ur more interested ... i chose Canon over Nikon due to its wider lens support ... use of 3rd party softwares like magic lantern saves me tons of money ... unfortunately no such camera hack is available for nikon sony olympus etc ... but these things will matter as u will grow in ur desired field ... but that doesnt mean these things make canon superior to nikon ... both have their own advantages and disadvantages its u who has to decide which one to choose that suits ur desired field more ...

bro 550D is discontinued and those whose are selling as new are actually refurbished.... D5100 is the best camera in 54k awesome iso performance and also autofocus in video too besides u can get canon 600D (my ex camera) for 60k new but my suggestion is to go for D5100 if u need for photos else 600D for videos

I need a great mid-level DSLR in 30k-35k range. Used preferred. Which would be the best and where can I find them? What about 1000D,1100D?
Sorry if the question has been already answered before.

I wouldn't recommend you to go for a DSLR in that range. Get a bridge camera.
