No you won't regret it. No bridge camera can compete with modern age dslrs, except for a few point and shoot and mirrorless cameras that have big sensors.

And those point and shoots don't fall within my budget?

Anyway, what DSLR would you recommend me if my only options were Nikon or Sony?

The thing is, I feel like if I go for a DSLR, much of its potential would be wasted. It wouldn't be shot in RAW nor would the pictures be post processed.

Nikon Coolpix A has a DX sensor but the lens that comes with it does not bring out its true potential. In mirrorless cameras, V and J series are ok but a good DX camera such as D7000 can easily outperform them in terms or image quality. X-pro1,Leica and Hasselblad mirrorless cameras are too expensive. D7000 is your best option. Get it with a 50 1.8D, give back the stock lens. But make sure that it doesn't back focus.

A D7000 is out of my budget. And I wish I'd known about back focus before I'd gotten mine. Its so bad, I can't even focus with the viewfinder using my 35/1.8 anymore. :/

Get a 3200 if you already have a 35 1.8G. And no, microadjustments don't work every time. Why get a camera that is faulty or in which lens adjustments are necessary.

Dear Gurus,

Here I am today, like a newb, knowing nothing about this tech stuff ... Out of nowhere, feel cheap, bad, and so many other things. And I need your help. NaNoW and Jshak have ignited the flame and now I want a blaze.

Have already read a lot of impressive posts in this section, but I feel (and know deep down) that they are a bit dated.

Long story short, I am not in Pakistan. But I want to gift someone important a DSLR. The person who'll be getting the camera, knows basically nothing about photography, but have had this craze since childhood, so I am kinda aware of the hidden potential. While I'm not in a position to get the best of the best, I am motivated. Except for Nikon D5300, what other choice do I have ? Whats so good in D7000 series? What about Lenses ? Prime lenses don't really seem that exciting. Zoom lenses maybe ?

Well, I would love to have something latest in tech industry, something sexy (girly), and definitely with godly picture quality (blurry effect, burst shots, image stabilization, water proof and all those sexy stuff. Must be fast. Must look badass, with a long lense attached. Getting the point ?

Lastly, I would need a place to get it from. Since I can't come personally, I want it delivered directly to the home, with maximum discreetness (i.e. I don't want to let them know that it's coming). Delivery area will be model town, Lahore ... And since it's not the best when it comes to security, I am kinda afraid too.

Anyway, sorry for the mixture of stuff. I forgot how to remain on point long ago [emoji14]

Please let the suggestion come. Pleasant, opethian, or any other hidden guru, I am missing.

I don't know shit about photography or which camera to suggest, but how are you planning to pay for the camera if you're not in Pakistan but you want it delivered to the person's home?

You could get it off HomeShopping or Telemart provided you have some sort of payment arrangement and an active Pakistani phone number to receive a verification phone call and a contact number for the courier.

Once that's settled, the product will be shipped and delivered to the person's home and all they'll have to do is sign for it.

Bro ... [emoji18]

It's my own home.

And I'll pay online, obviously. Never really purchase anything from HSN, like ever ... And I have checked their prices, which felt kinda absurd. Or maybe it's because rupee has fallen >_>

Then why so scared about security?

Just buy whatever pleasant or opethian suggest and have it shipped right over.

HSN can be quite a rip off which is why I mentioned Telemart but do check Shophive too, the prices may be fucked but they're based in Lahore and I think they offer same day delivery provided you order before 1 PM or something.

I mentioned about security because a couple of times, gunmen have robbed my brothers of their belongings inside model town. And by that, I was implying that choosing the expensive-ish camera isn't really my primary choice.

Once I have a couple more options than a D5300, instant purchase inshallah. Let's see ...

Hi there hope you are doing great first you should mention your budget ,Are you willing to get DSLR only or point and shoot can do as well
If you wanna expand you lens range then look into canon because lenses are cheaper if you wanna stick with one two lenses then go for Nikon or if you can afford there is no one stopping though :D
Canon has expensive body but cheaper lens
Nikon has cheaper body expensive lens

so it is your choice which league you want to join overall nikon is considered to be superior when it comes to Image quality and Lenses so it comes with cost as well

as you said you are looking into D5300 in similar price range you have 700D Canon as an option
you can see the side by side comparison
Canon 700D vs Nikon D5300 Detailed Comparison
both are good in each Nikon has more focus points which is great for sports photography and has 24mp ,builtin gps ,wireless and has better battery over canon
canon got higher ISO Range got touch screen even having higher having higher iso nikon has better High ISO performance

Now coming towards lenses for better quality results you need prime lenses with lower aperture i.e 1.6 or 1.8 i.e 50mm lens 35mm lens
are great for portraits and getting bokeh effect and works better in low light because of lower aperture value and prime lens produces much sharper results over zoom lens
but if you want all purpose lens then you can go with 18-200 or 50-200 or 18-300mm
but quality will Detroit the bigger the figure it gets
and in my opinion D5300 is a smart buy for starting up but you can always choose and go for canon family if you cannot afford the lenses

did you mentuin ur budget? sorry if i missed it
If the person you are buying for wants to grow with this hobby get a good body which can use cheaper lenses also.
Nikon D7000 and above can use cheaper nikon lenses which Nikon D5300 cant, its related to Autofocus motor. D5xxx and D3xxx series dont have this motor in the body n Nikon makes G/AFS lenses which has this motor inside the lens thats why the cost is high.
If budget is not a limitation then i will suggest get a Mirrorless body, like Sony A6300, A6500. Fujifilm XT-20 is one of the best options.
Fujifilm XT-20 body will cost 80k and lenses will set u back another 20-30k. Very capable camera. If budget allows get this. Very compact and functional.
If budget is limited then DSLR is a good option Nikon D7200/D7100 is used or new. Lenses like Nikon 50mm f1.8D will be of same price as Canon 50mm 1.8f. like Pleasant suggested, get a body and add lenses later as pocket permits. Canon is also a good option, get any cheap body, it has simpler line of bodies.

First you need to have info about the type of the photography that guy is interested in. If he's into portraits then buying a zoom lens would be useless. And if they're into landscapes then vice versa.

Prime lenses are a must. The standard kit lenses fall pretty short when it comes to night-time photography. D5300 is a wise choice and I would choose it anyday over Canons in the same price range. However you could still look into Canon 100D/200D if portability is a priority.

Plus if investment is not an issue I'd recommend you to opt for a full-frame body. The results are amazing as compared to a cropped-sensor.

But as you mentioned that the guy is a beginner, he should be okay with a Nikon 3 or 5 series.

Thanks all for your reply.
opethian! Are you actually suggesting a Mirrorless camera? Everywhere i read, it's a hot debatable topic, but people still prefer a DSLR. Or am i mistaken?

Also, what's with this Japan made and Thiland made? is there any difference?

Since i've visited the local distributors in UAE, prices are a little higher than usual. So currently, i am seeing following deals at Souq.com (a local ecommerce store in middle east):

1. Nikon D5500 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens + Tripod + DSLR Bag + 16GB SDHC Memory Card Bundle Kit @ AED 2389.00 ... which roughly equals to PKR 70,000. This is looking like a sweet deal, but i am reading that it's a thiland made, and has a Class4 SDCard. (Link for this curious: HERE)

2. Nikon D7200 Body Only + Tripod + DSLR Bag + 16GB SDHC Memory Card Bundle Kit @ AED 2,898.00. Link, HERE.

For casual n beginners mirrorless or DSLR makes no difference, mirrorless has size n weight advantage ... one more advantage of mirrorless (Sony Alpha mirrorless) is lens adaptability. They can take any lens, may it be Nikon or Canon or any old glass. So i would recommend mirrorless over dslr if the person is not a professional sports n wild life phtographer.

Baqi its always personal choice n how much money can be spent. If ur considering D5300 look into D3400 also, it will save even more bucks n spend that money on lenses ... If the guy has no specific field of photography decided yet then get basic kit lens n once he finds his "niche" then invest on those lenses,no need to buy every other lens which is affordable. Cheap lenses have bad optics and APSC sensors are not forgiving on cheap lenses n imperfections are easily visible.

Between D7200 and D5300 ill prefer d7200 its newer and long term investment ... but in same price one can get a refurbished or slightly used full frame also ... See how much can u spend n then choose accordingly ... Ill again say mirrorless has weight and size advantage othherwise its equally capable n in some cases more feature rich than any DSLR.
