Shit. I wanted to love this movie. I truly did. Days of Future Past was one of my favourite blockbusters of recent times and I have seen it at least three times. Ever since that post-credit scene, I was looking forward to this movie.
Then they announced that Oscar Isaac was playing the baddie and I saw some photos of him in make up. I thought: damn, this could be good. The trailers were just so-so, nothing ground breaking or mouth watering. But I didn't lose my heart. What's in a trailer? Look at Ghostbusters. Terrible trailer but I have utmost faith in Feig and the great leads of that movie (come on, how can you go wrong with Wiig, McKinnon and the great McCarthy!).
So, you ask, what went wrong? I say: everything! The villain Apocalypse serves two main purposes: he gathers four followers, without any forethought or good reason (Storm, why? Psylocke, what were her powers? Angel, why the hell? Magneto, OK that makes sense, but damn, they gave him the exact same motivations as before: family killed. Shit!). Second plan of action for the big baddie: sit around on a mountain top and put forth in motion a series of OK CGI rubble flying around. Never knew the end of the world could be so boring. That's probably my main beef with the movie: the villain is very, very weak. Sure, Isaac is a talented actor, in fact, a great one in the making, but this is not the role to showcase that. Granted, it is a comic book movie, but come on, look at Ledger, Bacon, Bruhl, Hiddleston.
Moving on. I understand that Jennifer Lawrence is probably the biggest star of this franchise, save Hugh Jackman. But she is definitely not the heart and soul. It has to be between Eric and Charles to sell the opposing sides. Mystique is an interesting character, but not an anchor. Also, spending time with the new crew also makes sense. They want new hands that can take over the franchise when this lot retires. Sure, McAvoy gets tons of screen time but he is by no means the principal player. It is not directly a complaint, but I wanted more of him and Fassbender playing against each other's ideals instead of Eric getting his heart turned around after a half-hearted, weak-ass pep talk.
There are few stand out scenes: Quicksilver gets a great moment, like in the previous one, complete with a song and fire. Wolfy gets his brutal moment. There's a psychic battle between Apocalypse and Charles that is good. But the final scene is so bad.. Apocalypse goes down so easy. I thought this guy was supposed to be something else, the strongest in the world, etc, etc. Sure as hell didn't look like it. He played all defence when I thought he was going to go batshit crazy on the X-Men.
Sorry, movie, I love this franchise, I grew up with it, but you broke my heart, you broke my heart!
