The Hunger Games surpassed the wildest industry expectations to debut to $155 million, according to studio estimates.

That’s the third-biggest opening weekend ever, behind only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 ($169.2 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million). It’s also the best debut ever for a non-sequel, crushing 2010′s Alice in Wonderland ($116.1 million), and it represents the top opening weekend for any picture outside the summer movie season.

And, yes, it must be mentioned — The Hunger Games opened stronger than all four Twilight films.

Finally some justice in the world.

the movie was great... slow at the start to build up characters and story which really let me get into the movie... thank God that we got in pakistan on the same date as the rest of the world... jennifer lawerence is so damn cute and made the movie so enjoyable...

I always get the feeling that it is inspired by Battle Royale. I can't understand why the author of THG novel cannot accept this simple fact. I might have not seen THG but its basic premise is the same as of Battle Royale. I don't think Hollywood can create a brutal flick like Battle Royale, that's why i was surprised to see THG making big bucks.

The opening was over estimated :p

It has actually opened to 152.5 million which are way less in term of ticket sales and estimated attendance when compared to The Dark Knight.

I am glad it didn't beat TDK, only TDR should be the one who can beat this record.

Omyakha: I am not saying that it beat TDK, i am just saying that it came pretty close(152.5 million vs 158 million). It is quite exceptional considering the fact that it was in 2D and not 3D(Harry Potter DH-2). IMO this movie doesn't deserve to make or beat such record but maybe US was just desperate for good movies :p

Harry Potter DH-2 was in 3D, this one is not. It is quite some accomplishment. But now i am afraid of seeing THG sequel every year <_<

Obviously this doesn't come close to either of those two movies in terms of quality but world is not a fair place. Trite like transformers, POTC, Twilight, Alice in Wonderland make billions of dollars, atleast this is far more deserving then them.

Wait, so Harry Potter DH II was actually worth watching? Haven't seen it myself, so wouldn't know. I was of the impression that most HP movies turned out to be a disappointment (minus the 3rd one, I think).

^The only 2 good HP movies were Goblet of Fire and Prisoner of Azbakan. The rest of them sucked.

The First 3 movies (Sorcerers Stone, Chamber Of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban) were all pretty good. The 4th Part was below-average and the next 2 parts sucked ass (Mainly due to details having to be cut, due to the length of the books). Deathly Hallow's part 1 and part 2 are pretty much the perfect ending for the series.

harry potter reallly upped their game with the last part :) was really exciting to see all those battles and stuff on the big screen ! PRETTY neat... the previous parts etc were kinda boring but the last part had it all ! plus i saw it in 2D in dha cinema so it was even better ! WASN'T worth watching much in 3D anyways !

The problem with the Harry Potter movies and 3D was that they were already pretty dark to begin with, put on those glasses and you can't see for shit.
Would 3D have added even more onto this tally? What do you guys think? Didn't do much for John Carter.
