[h=1]Suicide Squad: New Harley Quinn Photo Released[/h]

In a little over a week (at the time of writing this), the first movie focusing on the anti-heroes of the DC Extended Universe will be hiting the big screen in Suicide Squad. The primary focus of the team is without a doubt Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and her relationship to the most menacing Batman villain of all time — The Joker (Jared Leto).
A vast majority of the marketing and imagery that we’ve seen from the Suicide Squad film seems to focus on Joker and Harley. In that tradition, the latest image from the movie gives us a look at the Joker’s main squeeze looking far removed from her life of crime.
Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is obviously not only about her Tank Girl fashion sense, but has a sensual side to express, as well. The new image from Empire (see below) does keep her diamond motif, but the slinky dress is certainly a departure from what we’re used to seeing from the character. The image will most likely be featured in the upcoming issue of Empire that is featuring Joker on the cover.

Fans will remember Harley Quinn’s early days, when she debuted on Batman: The Animated Series as one of the Joker’s hired goons. Harley sported a full-body length jester costume that covered her hair completely. This look would continue, until the comic books and video games would slowly move her in a new, more modern direction that included multi-color dyed hair and a variety of costumes.
The role, orignally made famous by voice actress Arleen Sorkin, has since found new life in the comic books, animated movies and even the video games. The animated role has since moved on to the likes of Hynden Walch (The Batman, Batman: Assault on Arkham) and eventually Tara Strong, who has held claim to Harley in the Arkham and LEGO video games for some time now, and even portrayed a Suicide Squad version of her in a live-action cameo on an episode of the CW network Arrow series. Strong did the voice, while Cassidy Alexa filled the visual role.
The Suicide Squad promises to be the punk rock stepchild of the DCEU, which is a lot to live up to. This is a risky venture for Warner Bros. Pictures, but if it turns out that it was handled correctly by director David Ayer, then fans will get what they’ve wanted for so many years: a great big screen Clown Princess of Crime, Harley Quinn. It appears that we may soon be getting a Harley Quinn spinoff film as well, but that concept is very early in the development process.

[h=1]Suicide Squad Director Yells ‘F*** Marvel!’ at World Premiere[/h]

This is an exciting week for director David Ayer, whose big DC supervillain team-up movie Suicide Squad is finally arriving in theaters after more than a year of build-up. There’s plenty of hype for the movie, and though the review embargo hasn’t yet lifted, it’s currently tracking to gross $130-140 million in its opening weekend.
However, it seems that Ayer got a little bit carried away while speaking to a gathered audience at the world premiere of Suicide Squad in New York City. As recorded by a member of the audience, the director exclaimed “F*** Marvel!” to a responding chorus of cheers. According to attendee Ramin Setoodeh, a fan in the audience yelled the phrase first, and Ayer repeated it. The director also gave this explanation when he apologized soon afterwards on Twitter.

Sorry about getting caught up in the moment and saying f*ck Marvel. Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers.
— David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) August 2, 2016
As we’ve discussed previously, the rivalry between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe is largely generated by the fandom rather than the studios themselves; after all, any success within the superhero movie genre is a positive sign for both studios, and Marvel and Warner Bros. never release their movies in direct competition with one another (the next Marvel release is Doctor Strange in November). Though a lot of fans take the rivalry very seriously, Ayer was probably just acting in good fun when he repeated the fan’s call, and this shouldn’t be interpreted as him having any kind of serious, deep-seated loathing for Marvel. Both Warner Bros. and Marvel Studios have thus far affected an attitude of polite but detached interest towards one another, with little engagement between the two. If anything, it might help ease tensions if both studios played into the rivalry in a fun, good-natured way – perhaps by planning staged battles between the Marvel and DC actors at Comic-Con (with the option of inviting Vince McMahon to commentate). As it is, apology or no, Ayer’s spur-of-the-moment battle cry could unfortunately prove to be a further wedge between comic book movie fans.Suicide Squad is scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 5, 2016; Wonder Woman is slated for release on June 2, 2017; followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash is currently without a release date.

[h=1]Suicide Squad Now Tracking at Record $140M Opening Weekend[/h]

As far as Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe is concerned, the super villain team-up Suicide Squad is quickly proving itself to be the little superhero flick that could. Late last month, the film was tracking at an impressive $125 million opening weekend take. That would put it on pace to be one of the biggest debuts of the year, and for a film packed with recognizable stars in not-so recognizable roles, it would mean landing about $40 million shy of the studio’s early summer superhero slugfest, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
That kind of estimated take is not surprising, as, once again the film does star the likes of Will Smith, Academy Award winner Jared Leto, Emmy Winner Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, and more. It’s the sort of marketable cast that studio execs dream about, especially when the names are attached to a superhero property that already promises a cameo from Ben Affleck’s Batman, meaning the movie has a gooey cinematic universe baked right into its crust. What that means is, some analysts are now tracking the film’s opening weekend well above the purported $125 million take to something closer to $140 million.

If Squad were to hit the $140 million mark, that would see it beat the opening weekend of the current domestic box office champ Finding Dory, which opened up at $135 million, and has since gone on to rake in an impressive $469 million in the U.S. alone. Beating Dory would mean Suicide Squad would take the third highest-grossing opening of the year. It’s worth noting, however, that although projections are rosy for the film at the moment, those numbers are rising ahead of the film’s advance screenings for critics. Poor reviews could see the film’s projected take slip back toward the more conservative estimate of $125 million – which is, of course, still an astronomical sum and nothing to sneeze at.

Whatever the film’s final weekend tally is, it’s likely that the numbers owe a lot to the team working to keep the buzz alive and the hype building since, well, Comic-Con 2015. The relative ease of Suicide Squad‘s marketing aside, the folks behind the film’s trailers and advertisements didn’t lack for imagination. The film still boasts some of the grooviest trailers seen this year, especially the trailer released way back in January – the one set to Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ that managed to permanently alter the conversation surrounding the film. Since then, David Ayer’s vision of the dark underbelly of the DC Extended Universe appeared to be remarkably light and effervescent despite being filled with characters who wield guns, bats, teeth, and boomerangs, all for personal gain.
All that is to say, Suicide Squad may be looking at a record-breaking opening weekend thanks in part to some sharp trailers and a stellar cast, but the real question is whether or not the movie has the sort of staying power that will push it into the black and beyond; the kind of profit that justifies the potentially “infinite” sequels and spinoffs Warner Bros. is hoping for.
