[h=1]Suicide Squad Extended Cut is Officially Happening[/h]
Warner Bros. and DC Films are in the early days of creating the DCEU and through three movies, they have yet to completely win over audiences. Man of Steel seemed like a solid solo film that eventually became the first film in the universe. When they made the decision to make Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it seemed like a sure fire hit. Financially that was the case, but the critical reception helped to encourage them to release an extended cut for the home release that featured an extra 30 minutes of footage. Suicide Squad was met with a similar divisive response, which led fans to wonder if it too would get an extended or alternate cut down the road.
Initially, it seemed like that would not be happening with Suicide Squad writer/director David Ayer saying the theatrical cut was his cut, but something appears to have changed. That’s right, when Suicide Squad comes out on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD near the end of the year, it will do so with an extended cut of the film.
WB has now released an official announcement video confirming that an extended cut of Suicide Squad will be attached to the home release of the film. Fans will be able to see it first and early on Digital HD November 15th – before the hard disk copies of the film are released on December 13th, just in time for the holidays. This cut will include 13 minutes of additional footage.

This marks the second consecutive film that DC has made an extended cut of the movie for the home release. When this new cut is available, it will be interesting to see the reception that it receives. Most everyone would agree that the director’s cut of Batman V Superman made the movie better in some capacity, but that is more because of the editing and the larger story. It is impossible to say for certain that more time with Waller, Enchantress, and/or Task Force X will make the film undeniably better. The cast has already discussed some of the scenes that were cut from Suicide Squad, and it would be a shock if the majority of the scenes added back to the film did not revolve around Joker, Harley, or Deadshot given their reception. This could also be the chance for viewers dying to know more about Slipknot’s backstory, with those scenes also left on the cutting room floor. The pre, during, and post-production problems that Ayer and crew faced have been well chronicled, and now this cut will give fans a look at what else could have gone right or wrong. If the reception to this cut is once again better than the original release, questions will quickly begin to rise as to why these decisions are being made. In a world where plot points and characters being canon is such as a sticking point for fan theories and speculation, it is unclear whether or not these additional scenes are considered to actually exist within the confides of this universe. Moviegoers will have to wait and see whether or not the Suicide Squad extended cut is in fact better and will have to spend more money to do so.
