[h=1]Suicide Squad Extended Cut is Officially Happening[/h]

Warner Bros. and DC Films are in the early days of creating the DCEU and through three movies, they have yet to completely win over audiences. Man of Steel seemed like a solid solo film that eventually became the first film in the universe. When they made the decision to make Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it seemed like a sure fire hit. Financially that was the case, but the critical reception helped to encourage them to release an extended cut for the home release that featured an extra 30 minutes of footage. Suicide Squad was met with a similar divisive response, which led fans to wonder if it too would get an extended or alternate cut down the road.
Initially, it seemed like that would not be happening with Suicide Squad writer/director David Ayer saying the theatrical cut was his cut, but something appears to have changed. That’s right, when Suicide Squad comes out on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD near the end of the year, it will do so with an extended cut of the film.
WB has now released an official announcement video confirming that an extended cut of Suicide Squad will be attached to the home release of the film. Fans will be able to see it first and early on Digital HD November 15th – before the hard disk copies of the film are released on December 13th, just in time for the holidays. This cut will include 13 minutes of additional footage.

This marks the second consecutive film that DC has made an extended cut of the movie for the home release. When this new cut is available, it will be interesting to see the reception that it receives. Most everyone would agree that the director’s cut of Batman V Superman made the movie better in some capacity, but that is more because of the editing and the larger story. It is impossible to say for certain that more time with Waller, Enchantress, and/or Task Force X will make the film undeniably better. The cast has already discussed some of the scenes that were cut from Suicide Squad, and it would be a shock if the majority of the scenes added back to the film did not revolve around Joker, Harley, or Deadshot given their reception. This could also be the chance for viewers dying to know more about Slipknot’s backstory, with those scenes also left on the cutting room floor. The pre, during, and post-production problems that Ayer and crew faced have been well chronicled, and now this cut will give fans a look at what else could have gone right or wrong. If the reception to this cut is once again better than the original release, questions will quickly begin to rise as to why these decisions are being made. In a world where plot points and characters being canon is such as a sticking point for fan theories and speculation, it is unclear whether or not these additional scenes are considered to actually exist within the confides of this universe. Moviegoers will have to wait and see whether or not the Suicide Squad extended cut is in fact better and will have to spend more money to do so.

[h=1]Suicide Squad Extended Cut Runtime & Special Features Revealed[/h]

After a highly successful box office run that saw it bring in $744.2 million worldwide, Suicide Squad is nearing its home media release. DC’s story of the Worst. Heroes. Ever. will be available on digital beginning November 15, 2016, with the physical Blu-ray hitting store shelves in December. Many fans are excited to pick up a copy, since it was recently confirmed that an extended cut would be included on the disc. Since the “ultimate edition” of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was seen as an improvement over the theatrical cut, the hope was that the same could be said for Suicide Squad.
It’s no secret that there was a plethora of footage left on the cutting room floor, with Suicide Squad director David Ayer saying over the summer that they shot “a million and a half feet of footage” during production. Jared Leto also said that he filmed enough Joker material to make a standalone film about the Clown Prince of Crime. With the deleted scenes becoming a major talking point, the big question about the extended version is how much it will add to the movie. The initial reports suggested 13 minutes, but the official word is that it’s slightly less than that.

The DC Cinematic Reddit page got a hold of an image of the back of the Suicide Squad Blu-ray box, where it reveals that the extended cut runs for 134 minutes. That is 11 minutes longer than the 123 minute-long theatrical version. Viewers will recall that the ultimate edition of Batman V Superman stretched the film to a three-hour runtime, so Suicide Squad‘s version of that sounds like it will not be as extensive. This may be disappointing for some hoping that the extended cut could fix some of the movie’s disjointed narrative problems, but there’s still a chance that the new scenes are valuable and add further insight to the colorful cast of characters.

In the image, we also get our first look at the bonus features for Suicide Squad. Check out a list of the various featurettes below:

  • Task Force X: One Team, One Mission – Discover the rich legacy of DC’s most infamous bad guys
  • Squad Strength and Skills – How’d they whip themselves into shape? Get the inside story
  • Joker and Harley: The ‘It’ Couple of the Underworld – She’s rotten. He’s damaged. They’re a match made in hell
  • Chasing the Real – Writer/director David Ayer reveals techniques for creating an authentic surreal world
  • Plus Gag Reel and More!
The behind-the-scenes stories of Suicide Squad quickly became the stuff of legend, as each day had a new revelation about Ayer’s unusual rehearsal methods, actors inflicting bodily harm on themselves, and Leto’s infamous gifts to his co-stars. An argument can be made that the Blu-ray release is more anticipated for these “explosive extras than the actual movie, since many people will be interested in hearing the “truth.” Chances are, any real juicy details will be kept from the general public, but it should still be very fascinating to see the making of Suicide Squad, particularly since some of the headlines were stranger than fiction.
The gag reel could also be fun to check out, given that the cast developed a great chemistry with each other through filming. It was clear that they had a blast working on the film, and their blown takes probably led to fits of laughter and constant joking around. Many enjoyed the actors’ takes on the fan-favorite characters, so getting to spend more time with them in any capacity will be a treat. As moviegoers wait official word on Suicide Squad 2, the Blu-ray should give them plenty of new material to explore.
Suicide Squad will be available on digital November 15, 2016 and Blu-ray December 13, 2016.

[h=1]Suicide Squad Helps Time Warner Beat Earnings Expectations[/h]

The DC Extended Universe may still be looking for its first critical hit, but the franchise has done very well commercially. This year, both Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad grossed high numbers, with the latter being a rare bright spot at the summer box office. Opening to record figures in August, David Ayer’s villain/anti-hero team-up scored an impressive $745.2 million globally. In terms of the domestic charts, the film currently ranks as the eighth-highest earning movie of 2016 with $324.7 million. It ended its run as one of the most profitable films of the season, potentially launching a new series starring the colorful collection of characters.
Many were pleased by the film’s performance, including (obviously) distributor Warner Bros., who were very confident in the project’s ability to strike a chord. They had a lot riding on Suicide Squad, and its success brought in a lot of money for WB’s parent company Time Warner. In fact, the corporation’s projected earnings for the fiscal quarter were actually surpassed, with the DCEU deserving part of the credit.

In a report from Variety, it’s stated that for the three-month period that ended in September, revenues rose to $7.2 billion, operating costs increased to $2 billion, and earnings-per-share went to $1.87. Estimates originally indicated that revenue would be a shade under $7 billion, with earnings of $1.37 per share. The film slate had a large role to play in this development, as the period saw $3.4 billion in ticket sales. Suicide Squad was the top gun, but the biopic Sully also grossed more than expected. Though this will likely change soon, director Clint Eastwood’s latest is the only movie this fall to make more than $100 million in America.

There were other factors that contributed to Time Warner’s increased revenues (such as coverage of the presidential election and HBO), however, WB’s output will be key for the company moving forward. As Variety states, the studio had troubles lately due to lucrative cash cows like The Hobbit trilogy and the Harry Potter series coming to an end. They seem to have found a stable franchise that can fill the void; comic book movies are in vogue right now, and there’s much excitement surrounding the Wonder Woman solo movie, Justice League, and Ben Affleck’s The Batman. The DCEU may have some kinks to work out still, but it’s clear there’s a sizable audience for the property. Combine that with the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, WB is in great shape for the future.
Shortly after Batman V Superman premiered, it was said that WB was going to retool their business strategy to focus more on their established properties, limiting the number of original movies they green light. Being more selective about what gets approved could be beneficial for the studio, since fewer films means a greater chance of turning an overall profit. If that’s the case then there’s no reason why this little hot streak can’t continue into the next decade and put Time Warner back on top.

DC fan here, This movie was so bad it left a bad taste in my mouth after watching terrible plot, wanna be funny tone and Leto's joker performance were all really really bad. DC should stop making movies if they future productions are like this and stick to

comics and animations.

[h=1]Suicide Squad Soundtrack Gets 5 Grammy Nominations[/h]

This year has been a breakthrough year for fans of the DCEU, DC Comics’ on-screen universe. New cinematic additions have hit the big screen and fans are eager for more updates on upcoming projects like Wonder Woman and The Batman. In that former camp, no 2016 DCEU film was as successful as Suicide Squad which broke box office records, introduced fans to a new host of characters, and inspired a Harley Quinn solo spin-off.
The film didn’t just succeed as a movie, though. Many aspects of Suicide Squad have since received widespread recognition, including its soundtrack. Suicide Squad: The Album features a number of hit artists across multiple genres, some of whom produced original songs exclusively for the soundtrack. A few of those songs have earned critical and popular acclaim — the peak of which came with this week’s Grammy nominations.
The official Suicide Squad Instagram highlighted the film’s recognized songs in a recent post. Three of the album’s five Grammy nominations went to Twenty One Pilots’ smash “Heathens,” with the remaining two going to Skrillex and Rick Ross’s “Purple Lamborghini” and the album as a whole. Check out the post, which encapsulates the album’s nominations, below:

It looks like “Heathens” and “Purple Lamborghini” will actually compete in the “Best Song for Visual Media” category, along with fellow nominees “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” (Justin Timberlake, Trolls), “Just Like Fire” (P!nk, Alice Through the Looking Glass), “Try Everything” (Shakira, Zootopia), and “The Veil” (Peter Gabriel, Snowden). Meanwhile, Twenty One Pilots is up against competition from legends like Metallica, David Bowie, and Radiohead in the Best Rock Song category.
The Grammys are certainly shaping up to be lively this year, and it looks like Twenty One Pilots may very well perform during the show, given their newcomer status and multiple nominations. Whether Suicide Squad specifically takes home an award, it’s certainly a treat for fans to see the film earn some critical recognition — especially since the movie itself didn’t exactly garner acclaim. The soundtrack is facing off against critical hits like Amy and Straight Outta Compton, though neither of those nominees’ albums have been so successful on the charts.
In the end, this is exciting news for the Suicide Squad fan base that also brings attention to the multifaceted world of filmmaking. It’s cool to see one of the more easily ignored aspects of a film, like its music, receive this kind of recognition — especially on such a large scale.

[h=1]David Ayer Suggests Joker Would Have Been a Better Suicide Squad Villain[/h]

There is probably no topic more hotly debated amongst fan circles (at least on Screen Rant) than the fundamental value of the films in the DC Extended Universe. (Don’t like an artistic choice that Zack Snyder made? Here’s a one-way ticket to Marvel-schillville!) In 2016, Warner Brother released two films (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad) that did well in the box office but were largely panned by critics. Both were based on properties that are beloved in the fan community, and both could be described as hard-edged adaptations of their source material. Stylistic preferences aside, both were lambasted as disjointed, lacking character motivation, and riddled with plot holes. (Some of these qualities were later remedied with an extended cut in the home video release.)
In Suicide Squad, the presence (or lack thereof) of The Joker was a sticking point for many. Whether or not you liked Jared Leto’s portrayal of The Clown Prince of Crime, he was, at most, relegated to an arguably unnecessary subplot. This despite the fact that he was heavily featured in the film’s promotional material.
For at least one fan, none of these issues were a problem. Just recently, this devoted aficionado took to Twitter to offer some belated encouragement to Suicide Squad writer and director, David Ayer:
So thankful for suicide squad @DavidAyerMovies exactly the way it is. It's a masterpiece, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Ayer gave a detailed response regarding his feelings about the film’s criticism, but his most telling statement was quite succinct:
“Wish I had a time machine. I’d make the Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story.”

Either Ayer let anyone tell him otherwise, or his reflection on his own artistic journey led him to the decision that waylaying The Joker was a bad call. Either way, it raises questions as to how the project might have gone differently if Ayer had slanted the film this way to begin with.
The Enchantress (played by Cara Delevingne) worked because her villainy was enabled by the very organization that establishes the Squad. Could The Joker have had the same thematic impact on the team’s creation? Would the origin of his persona (or at least his current villainous plot) somehow have been Squad-handler Amanda Wallace’s fault? Considering The Joker’s anarchic behavior, this may have been a further stretch. Though if the film needed him, (and based on his presence in the marketing, WB clearly thought it did,) it would likely have been wise to make him the centerpiece of conflict.
Do you agree with Ayer that Suicide Squad would have been better served with The Joker in a larger villainous role? Let us know in the comments section and stay tuned to Screen Rant for updates on the DCEU’s catalog of films as they hit.
