Assalam Alaikum guys!
Does anyone have any idea about what sort of a university "Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS)" is?

Alhumdulillah I've gotten admission in PIEAS and FAST-NU. Now I really can't decide where to go. I plan on doing Electrical Engineering. I wanted to go to NUST-H12 but looking at my Merit Position, I don't think its possible anymore.

The thing is, I've heard a lot of mixed views about PIEAS. I know this guy who's a Professor at Sir Syed University Karachi and he told me to pick PIEAS without any second thoughts. He said engineers from institutes like LUMS and PIEAS are well respected in the market after their graduation. He said and I quote; "Agar degree chahaiy tou NED, Sir Syed ya FAST chale jao. Lekn agar tumhe sahi maanon mein engineer banna he tou pick institutes like LUMS, PIEAS or IST. Inn institutes k graduates ko nokri k liay market mein khwar nahi hona parta unlike graduates from NED or Sir Syed"

Then I asked a family member (a retired Army general) about PIEAS since I had heard PIEAS was part of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). He said he wouldn't recommend PIEAS cause he said you get tied down. Now i don't exactly know what this means, but he went on to elaborate that graduates from PIEAS get very decent jobs in the public sector in organisations like SUPARCO or KANUPP but thats it. It isnt easy for them to go abroad to study or even get jobs in other non-government organisations. He has friends working at PIEAS so he knows a good deal about it.

And thats what bothers me. After graduation, I want to study. I know I'll have to work before going for masters cause I want to do Masters from abroad and dont want to put a burden on my parents (cause obviously its gonna be expensive) but I really wanna do masters at the very least before I settle down...

So after this long rant I wanna know if any of you has the slightest bit of information about this university? Anything will help.
I know FAST is really good and known for CS but its not that good for Electrical.

Also when applying for masters abroad in countries like USA, Singapore or Australia, does the university from where you did your bachelors matter? (@Newton )

Thanks!

First of all, a big CONGRATS for getting into PIEAS. I can tell you a thing or two about PIEAS since my dad is a visiting lecturer there... He did his MS from there too and teaches MS classes... Now you said you want to pursue further education. Then, by all means you should go for PIEAS. Now as for "uni life" there, I am not much sure about it but I think its just normal in terms of mahool and fun enjoyment. One thing my dad told me is that, they teach a lot of stuff and there are lots of assignments but in the end, its very rewarding... Now after graduating from PIEAS, you can get a job in PAEC starting from 17 grade. But if you want higher education, you can do masters from PIEAS and go for PHD on scholarship provided by PIEAS (its something like that). After that, you can come back and serve the government or pay them some money (its a little compensation for leaving PIEAS) and stay in the country and become a professor or something... But you wanted higher education and you got it! But there is something you should know about PIEAS. HEC has ranked it the best uni for engineering in Pakistan but its still not accredited by PEC. So if the PEC stuff bothers you (it shouldn't if u really want to pursue further education) then you can maybe get more opinions.
Now as for FAST, it is also good for MS from abroad and such that but since u will be doing MS from abroad, there are only a few scholarships in engineering programs. However if money isn't a problem then you are good to go! And as for difficulty, you will face it everywhere... FAST and PIEAS, both give a lot of work, but still its for the student's learning and knowledge. They actually want to get students to do research and go the extra mile by themselves, something you need to do if you want to go for higher education!
As for PIEAS graduates, not many of them choose to for private sectors because a)lack of jobs b) shitty jobs if you can get it c)shit pay d)loads of work e) job insecurity and f)no allowances
PIEAS students go to PAEC directly, others stay and do MS and go abroad for PhD. This is an easier process...
And lastly, FAST offers EE in telecom and computer, while PIEAS has power. Even if something goes wrong and end up staying here, you can get the job easier as a PIEAS grad than FAST's.
Yes, the uni from which u did bachelors matters sometimes. If you really want to go for MS abroad, then write some research paper of something and work with professors of your university. The unis abroad prefer those universities which have more research papers published each year. FAST & PIEAS, both have research going on and they are both good for MS.

Degree chaye to FAST chlay jao? Hahahaha. FAST mai ginnay chunnay bande hote hain jinhai time per degree milti hai bhai. Baki sab delayed degrees due to being fail in a subject. FAST is NOT EASY. Getting into it is!

P.S: Go for Pieas if you're into engineering. FAST is good in AnF and CS!

Yaar that's what I'm confused about. The test wasn't really all that difficult then why do so few people get in?
And not many people have even heard about this university. If its really all that good then why isn't is famous like all the other engineering institutes?

Hey! Thanks for the quick reply bro.

I don't want to do masters from PIEAS. And I think my dad wants me to settle somewhere abroad so government jobs aren't really that big a pull factor for me. InshaAllah if all goes well, I will be looking for a job but just to pull myself through masters. So now that you know what I want to do, what I really want to know is that is there a disadvantage of going to PIEAS? Cause like I mentioned in my OP, my family member discouraged me from going to PIEAS saying that its difficult to leave PIEAS once you join it. (I take it to mean there'll be some problems if I apply abroad after bachelors).
If I may be so bold, can you please ask your dad about this concern? Please?

P.S. PIEAS's electrical and mechanical engineering is accredited by PEC.

I don't see PIEAS anywhere... cuz its not accredited.
As for leaving PIEAS, then IDT anyone would stop you... the thing is, studying from PIEAS guarantees your job in PAEC but as for leaving it, I will ask my dad for more info... And you don't have to do Masters from PIEAS, you can go anywhere you want. All u need is a good gpa + a good project and if you can get involved in some ongoing research and publish a paper, that can help a lot. Foreign universities considers those universities better which have more research going on...
I will ask my dad about doing MS from abroad, then I will tell you.

First of All, apke SSUET k teacher ne bilkul sahi farmaya.

Second, choose PIEAS aankhen band karke. Don't look at these rankings. PIEAS isn't that much popular since they offer only two of three disciplines. And only handful of people are picked up.
Your army uncle was not true. You're NOT obliged to work under them or any other organization. They give you choices to whether you'll be interested to work or not. Studying for MS? PIEAS also offers you that.

To summarize, PIEAS all the way. It blows FAST out of the water for Engg programs

maybe you live in karachi thats might be the reason
hec rankings speaks for itself
fast is no match for pieas in terms of engineering

If you're looking to settle/study abroad later, PIEAS is not the wisest option since it's a small institute which only deals with specific fields. Plus its association with Pakistan's Atomic Energy Commission is likely to set off paranoid alarm bells everywhere. And there's the fact that its located in a very remote place and there's very little to do on-campus so its students don't exactly enjoy life all that much.

Nope... that's not the case... People from PAEC go on conferences and training every year... And as for studying abroad, anyone can go.... PIEAS has tons of research going on in MS and PhD level and that's what matters. I have seen people go abroad and some are even professors in foreign universities now.
And by no means is it a small institute! HEC ranks universities on overall basis from its courses to the faculty. Jobs are limited everywhere... Its affiliation with PAEC is the main reason why people go for it.

You are looking to do Electrical right? Well NED is awesome for Electrical. Not sure about PIEAS for Electrical, I am sure it is quite good as well.

I won't emphasize more for PIEAS. Its the top of the game. You'll have to give up your life for four years but once you pass out you won't have to apply for the jobs yourself, they'll come to you (Even though you plan to do MSc, you'll still need an exp of 2 yrs since that's the new criteria in most of the unis now)

I know a couple of NEDians who had to run for 6 months to get a job.

Let me break it down for you:

Staying in Pakistan and the ONLY THING you care about a top notch degree and job in PAKISTAN etc: Choose PIEAS ankhain band.
Staying in Pakistan and actually care about your comforts and want to enjoy university life and mahol with a reasonable chance of success: FAST
Want to go Abroad anytime: DONT choose PIEAS. Choose FAST.

I am neither in NED, FAST nor in PIEAS so i can speak unbiased :) (I am in Nust H12 ACF)
