This question is for all the members here who are currently studying computer science (BS-CS), software engineering, or are in industry. Does your university's name matter when it comes to getting jobs? I have applied to three universities: FAST, IBA, and SZABIST. I realise that FAST outshines all others when it comes to CS (or at least that's the general consensus), but the trouble that concerns me is distance. It's farther than I had originally anticipated. It will cost me a considerable amount of time travelling everyday and to think that for four years is even more scary. I have been told by a couple people that your university's doesn't hold any real significance in CS, but then I have also been told things completely belie to that statement. What is your opinion on this? Also, if it's possible, please post where you are studying currently, so I can get a general idea.

Wow Chhowni
Travelling is a major problem and something not to be ignored. I experienced it first hand because my uni was an hour's drive from home.
Classes end late and you come back home pretty exhausted. Studies take a hit.

Might I add that hostel life, on the other hand, is bliss.

Matters a lot. Choose FAST :p Where do you live in Karachi?
I live in Gulshan. A friend of mine, who lives close to me, goes to FAST. According to him, it's a 45 minute drive to the university, while it takes 1 hour to 1:20 hours to get back (traffic, I think?). He says he's bound by university's bus timings, therefore he has to wait about 1 to 2 hours on couple days for the bus to leave for home.

As far as I'm aware, FAST doesn't allows same-city residents hostel facility.

At the end of the day, your skills will matter more for your job than your University degree.

It matters to a degree but it isn't the only thing that matters.

Universities tend to set the mood and mindset of the students, the kind of competition you can expect to find and flourish in. But it's really your own attitude and pro-activity that can take you beyond.

That said, when we as an organization hire at (colwiz | Your Research Life - Organised), our primary targets are FAST and KU, but we do consider Sir Syed, UIT and other institutes. It's just that we try to head hunt at FAST and KU.

So what are saying is, they are given an opportunity to prove themselves? It's understandable that organizations would first consider graduates from FAST, but graduates from IBA, etc. are given an opportunity as well, yeah?

Definitely. It's the skill that matters in the end. Not the university name. But universities like FAST and KU make it easier for us to find you if you're there. That's all.

I think Shyber was talking about the requirement process i.e they look for graduates from FAST/KU first. But like i said, it won't matter much especially in CS. If you are a skilled programmer/developer doing CS from some less known University, you can still get pretty good job offers based on your skills.

I recently graduated in Computer Science but I was in Lahore. Your university name matters BECAUSE, BECAUSE it is the teachers of that university which make it matters a lot. FAST is like a combination of both a well reputed university and a pretty skillful faculty. If you are asking whether they will prefer you if you are from FAST during a job/interview, well then forget it. Only 5-10% companies do such stuff and even then they sometimes end up selecting people from other universities.

Try to ask from people about the faculty who teaches at other universities. Then you will have an idea. The distance thing is really a pain and you seriously will not be in any mood to study for a quiz that is very next morning at 8am when you are coming home at 7pm in the evening.

Just to quote you an example, my university is PAK AIMS IMS Lahore. Not one of the best universities but I got the chance to study from teachers who were a permanent faculty of either GCU, FCCU, LUMS or FAST. So I would say that even without a well reputed university, I am better than many from those universities and few of its examples are sitting right next to me in my office :D

Exactly ! , I've also applied for fast but the distance is pain where as on other hand my current college(roots) has also started their own campus and offering BSCS and the distance is only 5min drive :D and the good thing is that i don't have to give any admission test to get in and i think they are affiliated with foreign unis...and yeah i also visited fast(ISB) campus and it's really pathetic. so i think i am gonna join that uni which is closer to home as you said it's the skills which matter most...

array yaar, also apply at KU; dont miss it.
University name might make you eligible for the interview, but if you cant impress them with your skills, tu thela hi lagao gay even if you're from FAST.

I'd suggest you choose the best university regardless of distance. It's only 4 years; they'll be over before you know it.
And then when you have a GF @ Fast, tu daur laga k jaao gay university even if it's 4 hours away ;-)

Universities dont only teach you skills but also build up your personality and approach towards knowledge/skills/life/etc.
Environment and ppl around you matter a lot. If you are in an average university with average students, your outlook towards life/job/everything will be average, or above average.

If you are surrounded by intelligent ppl, it'll make you rise higher even if you're average.

I'd suggest, apply everywhere, choose the best regardless of distance, and do your best there n then leave the rest to Allah.

Best of luck!

Exactly!!

I am also a BS-CS student MashAllah.
University is very important. Even though it is your skills and you hard work that matters in the end.
As said by saeedmazhar the university you choose to spend four years in will shape your personality and skills. What he said I could not have put in better words myself.

Other than that the university's career department also plays an important role in guiding for future and securing interviews etc and they also hold career fairs etc and have contacts with companies and the alumni who work in them and are now hiring. And those alumni may prefer students of their own universities.

Another thing is what some teacher said to me once that, employers prefer graduates from good universities. He gave example of LUMS, he said that employers have a general idea that the LUMS graduates have superior communication skills etc and the name of university is almost like a brand name nowadays. He was talking mainly about ACF, Econ etc. but it is safe to say that same things apply up to certain extent (may be less) to CS related disciplines too. Just like NUST and GIKI are preferred for engineering.

Everything you said was right except for the GF stuff. GF never ever helps you to exceed in studies(put asside exceptional casses where one's GF is intelligent as hell but even in this case, she will choose someone who is also like her). You said that he will have no problem managing time if he will have a gf but you forgot that if he stays home for that time, God knows how much his parents need him for those hours to help them in certain things or or even if his parents don't need him, he would have used that time somewhere else rather than wasting it on a thing that will probably going down the drain at the end of the day
