[h=3]Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.

I think luck only helps you up till a certain point after that it is all hard work.[/h]

Luck is something out of your control whereas hardwork is not.

Depending on something out of your control is never a good thing. You may get lucky once, or twice or many times and you'll start to feel comfortable and believe that luck will always carry you but there will come a time when that luck will turn on you in the worst possible way. At that moment, you will wish that you worked hard instead of relying on luck.

There is no simple solution to this argument. I have thought a lot on these lines, luck or hard work, being in a not so good position career wise has given me a lot of time to think on this. The only conclusion I have reached is for some people it is luck that works e.g. they were weaker than me in studies yet today they have way better career than me and for some it is hard work that works.
At the end of the day it is your "Rizq" which defines it all. There is no simple general rule for everyone.

Luck will always be >>>> Hardwork

You wake up early in the morning (HARDWORK) to stand in a CNG queue, and just as your turn comes the light goes out (LUCK) :banghead::banghead::banghead:

You can work as hard as you can, but if you are not at the right place at the right time you're screwed irrespective of the hardwork

Luck is more important than hardwork for example most hard working people are our blue collar workers, they work very hard yet they don't have much to show for. while there are some lucky people who born with golden spoon in their mouth and PS4 controller in their hands.

This is a very philosophical question and I'm actually pleasantly surprised to see it in the CCC. Anyway my take on it; as a fairly religious person I don't believe in "Luck". In my eyes everything happens for a reason. Nothing is by chance, if I got struck by a car it was for a reason, if I failed all my courses even thou I studied all semester it was for a reason. That reason might not be obvious at first but sooner or later the observant human will realize. There might even been a situation where no matter how much you try to observe you cannot seem to come up with a reason to why something has happened but in my mind in that situation you either aren't patient enough or lack appreciation. As many others have said before me in the thread, hard work is the real deal. It is what differentiates you from the pack. There is one more thing which you mentioned in the first post which was how do these two elements help to work towards your "GOAL". The GOAL itself in my eyes is THE MOST important. What is your goal? Is it a selfish goal or selfless goal. Do you want money or do you want to be a better contribution to society. Do you want a nice wife and house or help others afford houses. Focus on having the right goal and never stop working hard to achieve it.

TLDR: Luck, doesn't exist. Hard work is all you have. Both Luck or Hard work don't matter if you have a wrong goal. Focus on moving in the right direction. (y)

Exactly came to say that. If hardwork mattered, aj gadha jungle ka badshah hota.

It's the combination of the two, but I'll give luck a better score. I've seen numerous hardworking people still struggling in their lives. While I've seen a dozen people who you would've never thought that they could become so big. So luck it is mostly.

Its a luck to be born with a talent or with rich parents. To be someone or something, its pure hard work.
A donkey will remain a donkey despite his hard work, but a horse will end up with a bullet in his head if he don't do what a horse is suppose to do.
All those who say with luck they got a job or CNG in their cars, but if they don't work on that job or pay for that CNG well "bad luck" ;)

To be successful its a Mix of that Hardwork + Luck both comes in play
well we dont do much of Hardwork what people / labour outside on Road do in a scorching Sun yet they get paid lesser then us
it only reminds me one thing "Yeh Sub Tumhara Karam ha AAQA k baat ab tak bani hoi ha"

@Sadan314 So do you believe that everything happens for your own good?
This is such a broad topic I feel like I cant ever do justice to it, but I'll try to clarify. I might be able to explain this with an analogy, bear with me here I hope I can get my point across. So I would consider Hard work to be the INPUT and what happens to you to be the OUTPUT. I do something in the world (INPUT) and I get either a rewarded for it or I am not rewarded (two possible OUTPUTS). From my point of view luck is a pathetic excuse to make sense of the OUTPUT. For instance I study (Input) and I get good grades (Output), no problems there right? What happens if I study (Input) and I get bad grades (Output), ehh bad luck. Here is where I have an issue. Just Because you cant explain the output/outcome/end result of an action does not mean its luck. No such thing as luck. The output happened for a reason. Allah knows best. Now I want to address the good and bad outputs. So every output/outcome/end result is not for your own good. You cannot blindly assume its for your own good. I would like to quote two things my mother told me;
1. "If after doing an action you ended up being closer to Allah then you were before then it was good for you, if after doing something you ended up further from Allah then before then it was bad for you."
2. "Everything good in your life is because of Allah's grace, all praises are for Allah. Everything bad in your life is because of your mistakes, your lack of trust in Allah or you being astray."
So basically everything good in your life(which made your closer to Allah) was from Allah and everything bad in your life(which made you further from Allah) was due to your actions/mistakes. So where does hard work and goals come into this? Another analogy here, Hard work is the engine/will to move forward and Goal is the sail/direction. If your into Physics hardwork = scalar quantity and goal = vector quantity. Hard work needs to be their regardless or you don't move forward. Even bad people, need to do hard work, a robbery requires alot of hard work. But its the Goal or direction what will differentiate good from bad.

Direct Answer to Question: Everything is not for your own good, you need to use my mothers rule to see if it was good or bad. Example, my computer got blue screened, good or bad? Well now I don't feel the urge to miss taravee prayer at the mosque cause computer is dead, closer to Allah = good. I got straight A's this year good or bad? Well after looking at my result I feel proud of myself. Pride makes you further from Allah = bad. If you notice both these cases could go either way depending on how you react to the result. Loosing your computer could also be bad for you and getting A's can also be good for you.

*I feel like I also need to mention that this point of view might only appeal to a person who cares more about life after death rather than before. This might seem complete nonsense to a materialistic person who focus on his achievements on earth.

I would say 50% Luck and 50% hard work. I have seen total A*****es moving on luck, while at the same time extremely hard working persons not getting chance.

The correct assumption would be "Work hard as much as possible and Pray that luck favors you".

I an ideal world Luck favors hard working. But in Pakistan and generally in our society, Luck favors who has Sifarish and expert in cheating.

I think its a incredibly complex world and there alot of factors involved other than that, if you are talking about careers and how to excel in them.

1) what are your parents like?
2) What sort of environment do you live in?
3) Do you have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset?
4) Genes? How smart are you, are you naturally confident, good at understanding people etc?
5) Are you flexible enough to have the qualities you dont already have (gain confidence, stop being lazy).
6) How soon do you realize what you want to do and is the environment around you conducive for achieving what you want?

Is a successful career even the point, what is success even? Excelling at work? Good marriage? Being loved by the people around you?

I think philosophical questions like these have more questions than answers but I think you can divide all these into two things.

1) Things under you control.
2) Things not under your control.

Identify what is and is not under your control, leave what you can not change and focus on what you can.

Einstein said if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its life thinking it is stupid.

I've been an incredibly lucky person so far, I'm smarter than most people and people come up to me and ask how I can manage to get this and this grades without studying how so much, and how I just get things. Trust me, its not that hard, I am not smart, I have just had a very different mindset from most people. The brain is like any other organ, the more you use, the more you tap into its potential, the more you get out of it.

So in the end I'd say, we are all limited by our circumstances, we don't all have the same goals to achieve or the same purpose in life, and your success is judged by what you achieve given the circumstances you are born in. You can sit and complain about how you are unlucky or how you if you were just smart or had encouraging parents or knew early on in your life what you should do, you would be where you want to be, or you can throw all that bs out of the window, and focus on whats important.

To end, luck may get a person to places he could never dream of, but luck will NEVER get you satisfaction in your life ever, success to me is being satisfied with your life, and the only way you get that is by working hard. No matter how smart you are, you can always achieve more just with a little bit of hard work ;) And soon wasting your time lazing around becomes alien to you.

Einstein never said that. Facebook lies. Just saying.
The statement appeared after Einstein's death, and its source isn't confirmed but its reported he did say that, even if he didn't, the point is, everybody is good at something, we limit ourselves to limited professions like Doctor/Engineer/Accountant and in this framework, yes alot of people are dumb, but otherwise everybody has something that works out for them.
