A brain-eating amoeba has killed at least 10 people in Pakistan's most populous city since May, a World Health Organization official said on Tuesday.

Naegleria fowleri has a fatality rate of more than 98 percent. It is transmitted when contaminated water enters the body through the nose and cannot be passed person-to-person.
The 10 confirmed cases have all occurred in the southern port city of Karachi, said Dr Musa Khan, head of the WHO's Disease Early Warning System in Pakistan.

It is unclear if all cases have been reported as residents may not be familiar with the disease and Pakistan's hospitals are severely overstretched.

The amoeba travels from the nasal membranes to the brain. Symptoms are initially very mild, including a headache, stiff neck, fever and stomach pain. Death usually occurs five to seven days after infection.

Authorities are planning a campaign to raise awareness among health workers and the public, Khan said. Most health centres had already been alerted, he said.

"People should avoid getting water too deep into their nostrils and make sure their water supply is properly treated," he said. "Those with symptoms should seek help immediately."

Victims commonly catch it through swimming in infected water, but Khan said most of those who died did not have a history of swimming. Authorities were testing water from various parts of the city, he said.

The disease first surfaced in Karachi, a city of 18 million people, in 2006. This year's outbreak has been the first since then and the most recent deaths occurred last week.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control said on its web site that in the 10 years from 2002 to 2011, 32 infections were reported in the United States.

Looking up to this I found that it usually happens when you perform the cleaning of nostrils, so avoid taking in water too high in the nostrils during wudu, etc.

Most of all, stay safe and spread this news around, people need to be aware.

May Allah protect us, Ameen.

A friend of mine works at Liaqat Hospital, she told me abt these cases abt 2-3 months back; they had a guy come in with severe agitation and other mental symptoms which were subsequently revealed to be Negleria virus. She said he was a member of one of those religious travelling jammats, and had probably done wadu from a stagnant pond etc, and thats how the bacteria went into his system thru the nose.

- She said the patient was so much agitated that more than 5 orderlies had to hold him and cuff him so the doctors could sedate him. The bacterias eating thru the victims brain maybe thats what causes the extremely agitated states...

- He died eventually (fatality rate is 100%)

- There was another case in Agha Khan hosp before this one.

- Interestingly if swallowed, our stomach kills the bacteria before it has a chance to enter the blood stream.

- Stagnant water is the main culprit behind it as thats where it breeds.

She also said as this was a pretty big deal coz they'd only read abt this disease in their textbooks, in one of her senior docs went to see the brain biopsy one week after the person had died. She could still see the damn organism move here and there... now thats creepy!

Fatality rate is 98%, and the person usually dies in a week.

It is creepy, and very scary.

Interestingly, this surfaced only in MAY, the previous reported incidents were back in 2006.

If this is not stopped, it could escalate into an outbreak.

Karachi.
The government is increasing chlorine in water supplies so that if any amoeba arrived into the tap water, it would be killed.

My god...this shows who amazing our water system is that anything can germinate and mutate there into deadly strains and this is the result. This sounds like something staright out of Resident Evil. God, my heart goes out to these poor poor people. I hope no one else gets this and an awereness campaign is launched soon on all televisions and radio stations. I'm going to tell my mom first thing in the morning about this.

Is this only restricted to Karachi? God knows how dirty the water is there.

the disease can only be transmitted through the nose so it can be prevented if on takes precautions specially when performing Wuzoo

seems like a very rare disease with only a couple hundred reported cases in history
gonna have the Water Tanks in my home chlorinated until this disease passes

most cases were from Swimming pools without proper chlorination i guess and dont think it has made it into Karachi's Water Supply

hasanJ I doubt such a deadly strain would be killed by chlorine. Not trying to scare you, just saying.

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
