[h=1]Xbox Series X launch on schedule, but next-gen games may be delayed by pandemic[/h]

Xbox head Phil Spencer says game production is a ‘bigger unknown’

Microsoft’s next-generation console, the Xbox Series X, is still on schedule to launch this holiday season, according to Xbox head Phil Spencer. But the games that will launch with that system could see production delays, Spencer told CNBC in an interview on Thursday.
“[Our] teams are doing a really good job on keeping our hardware on track,” Spencer said when asked about the Xbox Series X launch date and the availability of consoles this year. “I’d say that the bigger unknown is probably the game production, just being honest. Game production is a large-scale entertainment activity now; you have hundreds of people coming together building assets, working through creative.
“On the hardware side, we feel good about our plans and [...] there’s obviously some impact to schedules, but overall I think we’re in line with where we thought we would be,” Spencer continued. “On the game production side [...] I still feel good about it, but I also need to make sure that the security and safety of the teams is the most important thing, and not unduly push when things just aren’t ready.”
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios hasn’t announced much of its Xbox Series X lineup, outside of 343 Industries’ Halo Infinite, which is scheduled to arrive this holiday season. The only other announced first-party Xbox game, Ninja Theory’s Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, does not have a release date.
Next week, Microsoft promises a first look at Xbox Series X gameplay, led by third parties. Ubisoft will show Assassin’s Creed Valhalla in action for the first time on May 7 alongside other games from third-party publishers. Microsoft said it plans to show its internal game projects sometime later this summer.

So, what is in store for 2020?

This is a momentous year for Xbox, with our next-gen console paving the way for all our games and services to come together in even better ways. Here’s what 2020 looks like, just to start:

  • Our goal remains to launch Xbox Series X and Halo Infinite this Holiday
  • All 15 Xbox Game Studios teams are hard at work on next-generation games for Xbox Series X and Xbox Game Pass
  • The best development teams around the world are working hard to have their games ready to play on Xbox Series X this holiday
  • For PC players, we plan to support the community by making all our major releases at launch available with Xbox Game Pass for PC, including Halo Infinite, Wasteland 3, Minecraft Dungeons and of course, Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  • We have new updates and titles lined up for Xbox Game Pass for console and PC
  • We’re expanding Project xCloud into new countries and on new devices—and later this year Project xCloud and Xbox Game Pass will come together, enabling you and your friends to play together in more ways.

Does any PS service allow you to play new games at release? Nope? Thought so.

Games leave "2 for 1" PS Now as well, after appearing years beyond their initial release

And thats September 2022 jackass :hah:

But what new games are you getting to play at release? Sea of Thieves, Crackdown, Bleeding Edge, Wasteland, B-tier Halo and Gears not developed by their OG creators?

For the occasional worthwhile first-party title like Ori 2 and Forza Horizon 4, there's always Steam regional pricing lol.

Microsoft lays out Xbox Series X plans for 2020

The Xbox team says it’s committed to launching the console alongside a slate of new games

On Tuesday, Team Xbox recommitted itself to releasing the Xbox Series X in 2020 alongside a slate of new video games. The division of Microsoft outlined part of its roadmap, pegging monthly updates — called Xbox 20/20 — about the new console and the ecosystem of services that surrounds it.
“What was already going to be a once-in-a-generation year for gaming,” wrote corporate vice president Jerret West in a news release, “has become the year that challenged us all and tested every commitment we’ve made in the face of COVID-19. Difficult tests tend to reveal your true priorities, and for us they are the health and safety of our employees, our fans and partners. We also want to be transparent in letting our players know what we are doing and what we are thinking during such a crucial time.”
Xbox 20/20 “moments,” as West referred to them, will be embedded within Team Xbox’s existing monthly presentations. He said they will serve as a vehicle for talking about Xbox Series X, Xbox Game Studios, Xbox Game Pass, and Project xCloud. The first presentation, coming May 7, will include loads of new gameplay, including a look at Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Inside Xbox will stream live starting at 8 a.m. PDT on Thursday, May 7. You can find it onMixer, at Twitch, on Facebook and Twitter, and on YouTube, where it will broadcast in 4K.
West went on to lay out plainly his team’s aspirations for the back half of 2020. First on the list is the launch of the Xbox Series X and Halo Infinite, which is due out for both the Xbox One and the new next-generation console. The game will also feature Microsoft’s new Smart Delivery solution, which will allow players who purchase the Xbox One version of the game to access a fully upgraded version for the Xbox Series X free of charge when it becomes available.
“All 15 Xbox Game Studios teams are hard at work on next-generation games for Xbox Series X and Xbox Game Pass,” West said. “The best development teams around the world are working hard to have their games ready to play on Xbox Series X this holiday.”
On Windows PC, along with Halo Infinite, Microsoft is promising Wasteland 3, Minecraft Dungeons, and Microsoft Flight Simulator. West also said that new titles for both console and PC have yet to be announced.
Finally, West said the team was continuing to focus on Project xCloud, Microsoft’s new game streaming technology. The service would add new regions and new devices to its slate of compatibility, including some crossover with the Xbox Game Pass catalog.

[h=1]Xbox exec says it ‘set some wrong expectations’ for Xbox Series X game reveals[/h]

Microsoft and Ubisoft respond to fan blowback

Reaction was mixed to Microsoft’s Inside Xbox livestream that showed off some of the first Xbox Series X gameplay, with many viewers complaining about the lack of actual gameplayon display Thursday morning. The YouTube upload of that Inside Xbox episode has been downvoted over 23,000 times (compared to more than 18,000 thumbs-up votes), and commenters vented frustration with what Microsoft and its partners showed.
Xbox games marketing general manager Aaron Greenberg responded to blowback about theInside Xbox livestream, saying that Microsoft “set some wrong expectations” about what would be shown and adding, “that’s on us.”

This week’s Inside Xbox promised a “first look at next-gen gameplay,” but the 27-minute show offered little of that. Some video previews of Xbox Series X games were labeled with stipulations that footage was “representative of expected Xbox Series X” gameplay or visual quality. In-engine previews of games like Madden NFL 21 comprised mere seconds of next-gen visuals, and for the big draw, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Ubisoft offered what some viewers labeled as just another cinematic trailer.
Microsoft has heard that feedback loud and clear, Greenberg said.
“Had we not said anything & just shown May Inside Xbox show like we did last month, I suspect reactions might have been different,” he wrote on Twitter. “Clearly we set some wrong expectations & that’s on us. We appreciate all the feedback & can assure you we will take it all in & learn as a team.”
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla creative director Ashraf Ismail likewise took a conciliatory approach to fan feedback on Twitter, saying, “You rightfully expected to see more today. We have a long marketing campaign ahead of us, you will see in-depth gameplay and get a lot more info about the game.
“Thank you for your excitement and passion! Be patient with us and be kind. It will be worth it!”
Of course, showcasing next-gen visuals on YouTube presents its own challenge, to say nothing of the pressure of trying to launch a next-gen console and video games amid the coronavirus pandemic. Many next-gen features, like 4K resolution, frame rates up to 120 frames per second, and HDR lighting, as well as fast loading times with built-in SSD hardware, aren’t best showcased in compressed YouTube or Twitch video. But Microsoft has more reveal events to get its promotion of the Xbox Series X right. Another major presentation, this time focusing on first-party Xbox Game Studios titles, is slated for July.
