Microsoft's next-gen Xbox is called 'Anaconda' and will arrive in 2020

MICROSOFT IS REPORTEDLY gearing up to launch two new Xbox consoles in 2020, codenamed 'Anaconda' and 'Lockhart'.

According to a report at Windows Central, Microsoft will launch its so-called 'Scarlett' family of next-gen Xbox consoles in 2020.

The flagship 'Anaconda' model, seemingly codenamed by a Nicki Minaj fan at Microsoft, will be the equivalent of the current Xbox One X, with improved hardware and souped-up internals from AMD. The console might also include SSD storage for the first time, in order to reduce game load times.

A second console, codenamed 'Lockhart', will be a follow-up to the lesser-specced Xbox One S, according to the report, which describes it as "potentially around as powerful as the current Xbox One X hardware wise, with refinements under the hood."

While gamers have another year-and-a-bit to wait until Microsoft shows off its next-gen Xboxes, earlier rumours claim Redmond is planning a disc-less version of the Xbox One S for 2019.
The report also claims that both of these consoles, referred to by Windows Central as the "S-2" and "X-2", will support existing backwards-compatible Xbox and Xbox 360 games, along with current Xbox One titles.

While these are the two next-generation Xbox consoles, Microsoft could also be preparing a disc-less version of the Xbox One S for 2019. Codenamed 'Xbox Scarlet Cloud', the console is expected to arrive as a cheaper, cut-down device, largely used to fuel interest in Project Xcloud, Microsoft's in-house game streaming service.
Microsoft is also expected to offer a 'disc-to-digital' scheme, which would allow people to trade in their physical copies of games for digital version, essentially allowing them to ditch the older media format and embrace the as-a-service model.

And According to a new report from WCCFTech, the so-called Xbox Scarlet Cloud will utilize a semi-custom AMD Picasso chip, set to be introduced as part of AMD's Ryzen 3000 lineup.

Microsoft's 4 New Xbox Consoles in Development, Explained

It's no secret that the next generation of gaming consoles is around the corner. While gamers await details on the PlayStation 5 and revised Nintendo Switch, Microsoft looks to be ramping up for a new generation with a whopping four consoles currently in development. The first true next-gen Xbox is known as Scarlett, which now looks to be made up of two consoles. These platforms are codenamed Anaconda and Lockheart - each of which will cater to different gaming niches.
Meanwhile, another project (codenamed Maverick) is said to be Xbox's first streaming-only console. Although it falls outside of the aforementioned Scarlett line, it could arrive as soon as Spring 2019 if the latest report is to be believed. Finally, the Xbox One S is said to be getting another revision that will make it cheaper and put it in line with Microsoft's streaming plans.

These reports arrive from Thurrott, which has release previous details about Xbox's Scarlett project. These are all rumors, so don't take these reports as gospel quite yet, but here are the alleged details on Microsoft's upcoming four consoles:

  • Anaconda - Set to cater to a similar niche as the Xbox One X, the Anaconda is said to be a more powerful version of Scarlett that will appease hardcore gamers. It's anticipated to arrive in 2020, presumably alongside Lockheart.

  • Lockheart - This console will take on a similar role to that of the Xbox One S. The platform will be less powerful, making it more affordable and appealing to more casual gamers. It is expected to arrive in 2020, presumably alongside the more powerful Anaconda.

  • Maverick - This is said to be a very interesting venture for Microsoft as it makes moves to break through into the game streaming market with its xCloud platform. There will be no disc-drive included with this hardware, ensuring that users will have to rely on downloading or streaming their content. This particular console is not part of the Scarlett line, so it could arrive as soon as Spring 2019.

  • Xbox One S Revision - One final "hoorah" for the Xbox One S is said to be in the works. It won't be ditching disc-based content like the Maverick, but it will have a newfound focus on xCloud. The goal is to cut down on manufacturing costs with this hardware, which should make it cheaper for consumers. This is expected to release in 2019.

Next-Gen Xbox Initial Info at E3 2019 - Release Not Before Fall 2020

Microsoft will not be shipping its next-gen consoles until the fall of 2020 but the company is preparing to talk more about the hardware this year at E3, 2019, according to people familiar with the company’s plans. Don’t expect to hear pricing just yet, but the company wants it to be known that they are moving full steam ahead with the upcoming Lockhart and Anaconda devices and will begin to peel back the onion on these two devices.

[h=1]More rumors point to disc-less Xbox One, here in spring[/h]

[h=2]Xbox with no disc drive, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria[/h]

Another report, again citing unnamed sources, says a new Xbox One S model launching this year won’t have a disc drive. In fact, it could be here sooner than expected.
Somewhat corroborating, or at least aligning, with earlier reports, Windows Central says the disc-less S (say that one very fast) would hit shelves in May, with pre-orders beginning mid-April.
In November, tech outlet Thurrott quoted unnamed sources in saying such a console would sell for less than $200, and that Microsoft stores would support a program where users could take in their physical media games and exchange them for download codes to their Xbox Live account.
So far, Microsoft has not commented on whether it’s true this console has no disc drive.
Windows Central also reports that Microsoft is getting ready to announce a custom-designFortniteEdition console, but doesn’t say if that would be the regular S, the Xbox One X, or the new disc-less type.
Microsoft launched the Xbox One S in August 2016, then pushed into the digital distribution space hard with the launch of Xbox Game Pass in June 2017. Starting last year, Xbox’s first party games like Forza Horizon 4and Crackdown 3also launch day-and-date on Game Pass. So it makes sense for the company to drop the component cost of an optical media drive if there’s a library of 200-plus downloadable titles (with a monthly $9.99 subscription fee) to support it.

[h=1]Xbox One S All-Digital Version Leak Confirms Launch Next Month[/h]

A new leak appears to confirm the existence of the Xbox One S All-Digital variant, including a potential release date of May 7, at least in European markets. There have been rumors of an all-digital Xbox One S for a number of months, although the persistent suggestion that a console with no disc-drive would be coming soon has always been met with silence on Microsoft's part.
The industry is changing rapidly, and while a console with no disc drive would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, the reality is it's not even that innovative at this point in time. Google Stadia is set to change the way we think about video games later this year with a streaming service that could eliminate the need for consoles—and, by extension, games on disc—by hosting titles on company servers. Microsoft has also been experimenting with similar technology, as reports have indicated the company is very interested in providing streaming services itself in the future, something that could possibly include Nintendo and its Switch as part of a selling point. A Microsoft Xbox One S All-Digital variant wouldn't be surprising based on that.

German website
WinFuture.de obtained images of an apparent Microsoft Xbox One S All-Digital variant over the weekend, with the images appearing to stem from an unnamed European retailer. There's a lot to be gleaned from the box art, apparently: the new console might with pre-installed copies of Minecraft, Sea of Thieves, and Forza Horizon 3, while it appears the launch version will have a 1TB hard drive. The latter is an especially important component for a console that will be hungry for hard drive space thanks to its need to download all of the titles that will be played on it. Although a previousXbox One S leak hinted at most of this information, this is much more solid proof, and it comes with perhaps the most important element of all—the console's price point. The console will retail for roughly $260 USD based on the leak.

Of course, it's worth keeping in mind that this might just be one variant of an Xbox One S All-Digital console, and that there may be options that are both cheaper and more expensive. Still, a disc-less console that comes with three good pre-installed games for less than $300 is a mouth-watering prospect for many people who might have been interested in owning an Xbox One S alongside a Nintendo or Sony device they already had. Offering a cheaper console is one way for Microsoft to increase its market penetration as well, which has been sorely lacking in a console generation that has been utterly dominated by Sony's PlayStation 4, despite the latter's reluctance to innovate or partner with competitors hindering it somewhat over the past few months.

As always, this leak is a rumor until Microsoft confirms the Xbox One S All-Digital console itself. If it exists, though, it's yet another nod to the likelihood we will soon be leaving console gaming as we currently understand it behind. Between new streaming services and disc-less consoles, physical games seem like they'll continue to play a smaller role in the industry, something that we've seen supported by
GameStop's profits plummeting and digital download sales becoming a more relevant metric for success than physical.

[h=1]Xbox One S All-Digital Edition launches May 7 for $249.99[/h]
[h=2]No discs, just downloads[/h]

Microsoft’s discless version of the Xbox One — officially known as the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition — will be released on May 7 and will cost $249.99. That makes it the least expensive Xbox One in Microsoft’s lineup, $50 less than the standard Xbox One S.
The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition will, as its name implies, will only play digital games and other digital content, like movies, music, and television series. It will also include three digital games as part of the base packing: Playground Games’ open-world racer Forza Horizon 3, Mojang’s creative building game Minecraft, and Rare’s pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves. Those three games would cost $119.97 if you were to purchase them digitally, making the download-only Xbox One S a pretty good deal for new console owners.
Buyers will also get access to Xbox Game Pass for a discount: $1 for three months.
Pre-orders for the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition are live now at the Xbox Store, Amazon, and Best Buy.

------------------

50$ a difference, doesn't make up for thatmuch, perhaps only good for new customers.
