Hey guys, i need some serious help. Any clues in this regard would be appreciated. murtaza12

I got GPON in my area around July. Initially when the connection was installed Internet has been working flawlessly however the IPTV has always been kind of creating problems. When it was installed there was a black screen on the live channels. Only the old recordings were working fine. It took around 5-6 days for PTCL to figure out the issue and it was probably resolved from the backend. Now a few days there was extensive issue of stuttering and hanging with the channels. The channel would hang and would not come back for atleast 10-15 mins. I called them and they sent a guy who either reset the STB or got something done from the backend which resulted in the Live channels being gone again. Its simple black screen now. Its been around 7 days now and they have not been able to resolve the issue. Their NOC and tech guys been coming to my house daily and spending 5-6 hours but to no avail. They have changed the ONT STB and still the issue isnt resolved.

Any help in this regard would be appreciated. The STB is binded on the ONT on Port 2.

Is it the black ZTE SmartTV box?

If so, while the screen is black, check if you can go to settings and check connection status. If it's connected and it still shows black screen, then it's safe to say even PTCLs tech guys are incompetent.

If it's not connected or shows an error (PPPoE), then it's a configuration issue. The SmartTV box for GPON at least requires the standard PPPoE config and then 'middleware' login credentials for IPTV to work properly.

Also, what brand ONT do you have?

Its a white box Android based. I wasnt using PTCL earlier so not sure or have not seen the ZTE one. As far as the middleware goes its valid and the message appears write successful. PPPOE successfully shows connected with IP designated. if we enter a wrong or invalid middleware name it does not boot up and returns that its not a valid username so that means the middleware name is correct.

What vendor is your ONT from? ZTE, Huawei or some other manufacturer?

murtaza12 remember how I was contemplating how I can get in touch with PTCL so that they can change the routing?

Well - I did. Over Twitter. And they eventually changed it. I told them that feedly.com is going to Europe whereas SEA has mirrors - I gave them TW1's trace and PTCL's trace, and then told them that if you ping (some) Singaporean IP, the pings are ~110ms or so.

They said 24 hours later that they had fixed it - but hadn't THEN, but is now. In fact, a few other websites have been routed through Singapore now as well.

So... I guess they just weren't told that they have better routes available.
thats so unreal...

I cant believe ptcl giving such response,

whatever, you were using stormfiber o guess ? No?

ONT is Hauwei since its the same pairing that is mentioned above. In my area OLT is also from Huawei
Check the SmartTV box with LAN port 4, instead of LAN port 2. If it still doesn't work, PTCL is truly incompetent if even the NOC guys were unable to fix this.

When we were getting our connection installed, they said only ZTE boxes are now compatible, and that the Huawei ones aren't supported (I previously had a Huawei one on DSL). I'm not talking about the ONT, but the PTCL TV box.

Could have been a fluke - or just extra lucky - or that no one gave them empirical evidence and ping times and IP pings. I didn't ask them to enable peering - just told them to route something via Singapore. But now, several other sites which previously weren't going through Singapore, now are.

Initially when it was working it was working on Port 4. Dont know what they messed up after that. If i check the ONT Port 3 and 4 is coming up as locked and the IPTV is binded on port 2. So far no resolution by the NOC guys a well. One of the NOC guys has been coming to my place for the last 2 days so far nothing.

Can you change or edit port settings for the LAN ports from the ONT portal or is it locked out like every other ISP?

Got rid of PTCL (Finally). Since storm fiber is operating in my area now. I am the first connection is my area and they installed it just in 5 days (impressive).

Black ops 4 just released and i was getting pings of 170-180 (sometimes 200+) on VDSL PTCL. Its really nice to play with a ping of 110ms now. 20mbps package for storm fiber costs as much PTCL`s VDSL.

Honestly, Islamabad needs more competition.

We have Nayatel who's fleecing customers (but they have great support so that's that), PTCL which is pretty reliable on fiber, but customer support is hit or miss (mostly the latter), and Transworld which is content with DHA and Bahria Phase 1, no proper TV and borrowing phone services from Nayatel.

And this is the capital city of the country, ladies (do we have any around here?) and gentlemen.

Optix is in three localities, last I heard - and that's it. Then there's Fiberlink which everyone avoids like the plague...but once again, these companies aren't covering many areas.

They should really focus on infrastructure sharing... Like they do with DSL.

What's the ISP scene in Peshawar? Also, how many competitors and how good is their coverage?

No, I'm not packing my bags to come to Peshawar. I've been there - twice - to attend weddings. In probably Peshawar's only wedding hall as well lol.
