PTCL TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE



Disclaimer: This is a dumbed down version. If you find any 'technical' irregularities here, keep it to yourself. However, if you feel to 'add', 'remove' or 'modify' anything, you are more than welcome to send a Private Message (PM) to two people. 1) @StrikerX 2) @abobobilly

HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT



1. Open Your Modem Settings Page. By Default, its 192.168.1.1 with a username = admin, and password = admin. (Check Pictures above)

2. As shown in pictures above, go to your ADSL Statistics Page. The area you should look at, is highlighted in above pictures, tagged as "Area of Concern".

3. First check the Downstream & Upstream Rate. Check the Table Below for 'minimum vales' you need.

- If its more than that. You are good.
- If its less ... then it could be because of two reasons.
i) Your Line Profile (from back end i.e. exchange side) is not upgraded to your desired connection speed (for example, a person upgraded from 2Mbps to 4Mbps still has less than 4096kbps line profile.
---Creates Problem: "Insufficient Download Speed".
---What do do? Lodge a Complaint for "Broadband" at myPTCL Portal. (Link: https://my.ptcl.net.pk/RegisterComplaint.aspx)

ii) Phone Line may be at fault.
--- In which case, move to "4", and check your SNR Margin.

4. Now check the SNR Margin from your ADSL Statistics Page.
- For any connection (1Mbps, 2Mbps, 4Mbps or higher), your minimum SNR should be 9.0dB. (The higher the better).
- If its more than that. Your Phone Line is in good condition.
---What do do? Move back to 3(i) above, and Lodge a Complaint for "Broadband >>> Slow Browsing, Low Line Parameters" at myPTCL Portal, as stated before.

- If SNR is less than that ... then your Phone Line is at fault (from Distribution Box, where wire comes from, to your home).
---Creates Problem: "Random Disconnections".
---What do do? Lodge a Complaint for "PSTN >>> Internet Problem" at myPTCL Portal. (Link: https://my.ptcl.net.pk/RegisterComplaint.aspx)


Still Getting Random Disconnections?
  • Go back to your Modem's ADSL Statistics Page (as shown in Pictures above).
  • Look for "Line Mode" or "Modulation". See this picture below for reference. The Line Mode is ADSL2+.

  • Find a Setting in your Modem's Settings Page called "DSL Settings" (improvise, as i don't have a picture. But its usually in "Advance > Network Tools" settings)
  • Make sure ONLY G.DMT is ticked, under "Modulation". Keep BitSwap Enabled. Here is how a good setting will look like.

my line stats and snr are good --they fluctuate due to no specific reason - tried a lot with lineman but he simply says the main line from junction box to db has been repaired repeatedly hence nearly all the dp in the poll have problems --i had to drop down from 8mb to 4mb due to this --

but still in 4mb --i cant seem to play a game as it cuts down automatically .

If fluctuation is minimal (say, SNR drops from 10.5dB to 8.5dB) then its normal. If the drop is big (say, from 10.5dB to 3.0dB or 5.0dB) then its definitely your phone line at fault. If regular complaints are not cutting out for you, you can visit PTCL Local Exchange of your area, and drop an application there asking to change the DB, stating your problem. If that doesn't work out, then time to pay a visit to PTCL Head Office in your city.

I recently converted to PTCL 4mbps after which the speed started to fluctuate very much and sometime disconnections. Should I get fiber optic line or any other thing I should do to get stable speed at 4mbps.

The stats are just perfect. If you could tell me how often does your DSL desyncs (i.e. disconnects)?

If its once every 10-12 hours, then its fine because it resets the IP. (same is happening with me). However, if its happening every few minutes, or after every few hours, then try changing the DSL Modulation first.

Find the "DSL" settings (usually located under "Network Tools"), and change the Modulation from ADSL2+ to "ADSL2". Observe the stability. If you still face random disconnections then change it even lower, to "G.DMT", which offers maximum stability.

If it still does not solve your problem, then you'll have to contact your line man and ask him to change your 'pair'. [MENTION=11094]StrikerX[/MENTION] can shed more details on this aspect.

What disconnects? ADSL light on modem starts blinking or internet light turns off (or red)? Latency is a bit unrelated to your line, its more of an ISP network issue (slow browsing, high latency etc has been going on for the past few days now)

Kindly do what I said about DSL modulation. Change it to G.DMT ... observe and report back.

i went through the guide and registered complaints for step 4, my SNR margin was 0.1db, is that normal or am i looking at the wrong thing?
It can't be 0.1db, you must be reading it wrong. That's why I said to post screenshots people.

Can any one kindly confirm is PTCL 4mb to 8mb Promotional offer is permenant or for a time being?
It's a temporary upgrade for 4Mbps owners to 8Mbps. I don't remember the rest of the details so you will have to search a little.
