The game loading slow could be a lens-related issue, but the XMB stalling suggests that the hard drive may have been corrupted. In such a scenario, a complete format may help.

Try the 5th option from the recovery menu i.e. "Restore PS3 System". Ask your friend to backup all the data in his PS3, if possible, because this will remove everything on the hard drive.

If this doesn't work as well, try replacing the hard drive with a spare one, or one from some working PS3 and see if it works.

The Official Help Thread V2.0

Welcome to the official help thread for the mighty PS3 !

Every now and then, everyone needs help with something regarding the PS3, whether it be about cleaning it, hacking it, information about it, software related, hardware related etc
This thread serves to help you in the best possible way and efficiently so it saves you the time that you will take to post about a certain query.
We did our best to answer many of the common questions regarding the PS3 but time and again everything changes and many new questions and theories rise up.

For hacking related questions please visit: http://www.pakgamers.com/forums/f35/ps3-hack-homebrew-discussion-thread-65330/

Some of the questions that many people ask:
1. Where to get a PS3 and does it have warranty here in Pakistan?
To get the best deals on brand news PS3s, I recommend that you visit the threads of our premium sellers in the marketplace.
Warranty is only offered if you buy PS3 from SONY Center. However, it's almost impossible that your PS3 breaks down within the warranty time frame.
Plus, SONY Center is pricey.

2. Why should I get a PS3?
Two reasons. Exclusives and a complete entertainment center.
PS3 can almost do anything you can imagine, virtually of course so stop thinking that you will get a massage or a personal maid...
It is the one of the cheapest BLU-RAY player in the market, provides you with complete entertainment options, whether it be watching movies in Hi-Def, viewing pictures, playing games, listening to music, interacting with people in the virtual world, you name it...
And now with release of latest firmware versions, PS3 is now a fully 3D capable device, 3D games and 3D movies and 3D pictures can be viewed on the PS3.

3. Regions ! What's so evil about them?
Regions are basically the most important thing concerning PS3.
No no you shouldn't be scared now.

The PS3 world is divided into three main different regions...
Region 1, Region 2 and Region 3 (Region 4 also exists but it kinda falls in the Region 3)
Region 1 is the USA and Canada. (NTSC-U)
Region 2 is Europe and Middle East. (PAL)
Region 3 is the whole Asia. (NTSC-J)

4. Okay, so which Region PS3 should I go for?
The most popular Region PS3 here in Pakistan is Region 2.
That is because PAL works better here.
Also depending on the Region are locks...

Be free of any tension and worry that if you buy a Region 1 console, only Region 1 games will work on it...
Sony made the games Region free...meaning?
You can have any Region console you want and you can get any Region game to play on it and it will play it without a hassle and trouble of Region locks...

However, the original Blu-Ray movies ARE region locked...meaning?
If you have a Region 2 PS3 and you get a BLU-RAY movie from USA that is a Region 1 movie, your PS3 will not play it because of the Region locking for movies including DVDs.

5. Okay, so I got a PS3, now what?
Do the monkey with me !
Now you can explore the world of gaming and entertainment.
Gaming comes first...
Check out the extensive games library on the PS3.
Sign up for the PSN.
Visit the store, download themes and avatars, customize your profile etc.

6. I'm not seeing Pakistan in the country list for the PSN :/?
That is because Sony hasn't officially released the PS3 in Pakistan yet.
That's why warranty isn't offered here either.

7. So what should I do about the PSN then? How can I sign-up when my country isn't in the list?
Do what the others do !
LIE ! Or more precisely improvise...

Select the most favourite country of yours and sign-up through there. Problem solved.

8. What about the address/ZIP code etc it asks me?
Google is your best friend...
Search queries like New York ZIP codes etc and you're done.

9. Wait you just talked about Regions above, what about PSN accounts? Are they Region locked too?
Nopes. The accounts aren't Region locked which means you can have a Region 3 account on a Region 2 console or a Region 1 account on a Region 2 account and this goes on...
The PSN Region only matters when DLC comes into play.

10. Wait now what is DLC?
Downloadable Content, DLC, is the add-on that many game developers now offer for their released games such as new multiplayer maps, further continuation in the story, some other game modes etc.

11. So how is DLC linked with Region?
DLC is basically linked with what Region game you have. If you have a Region 2 game, you're gonna need a Region 2 account to visit the store and download DLC for that game.
So, if you have a Region 1 game but you download the DLC from a Region 2 account, the DLC won't work.
We'll leave the console Region at that for games as they are Region free but DLCs which are more locked to a game's Region than the console/account.

12. Can I play a Region 1 game on my Region 2 account on my Region 3 PS3?
Abso-effin-lutely.

13. Back to console region difference, explain more.
Region 1 and Region 2 are practically the same when it comes to software. The only difference that comes with software is with Region 3....meaning?
The basic selection and cancel buttons on a Region 1 or 2 console are X (Cross) and O (Circle), but on a Region 3 console they are swapped, O (Circle) for selection and X (Cross) for cancellation.

14. Let's talk about games, how much do they cost?
In Pakistan, from the market outside of PG a brand new game may cost you anything between Rs.5000-6000 because that is the price of the games converted from $60.
But our premium sellers here do bring in brand new games much cheaply than the market rate.

15. Okay, so I bought a game, popped it in the PS3, played for a while and felt like I was playing PS2 , why so?
Reason. SDTV. Games look much better on a HDTV rather than a SDTV. As that's how the games are meant to be played. Even on SDTV they look better but some games are just made to be played in HD.

16. What is HD and HDTV?
HD is short for High-Definition and HDTV stands for Hi-Def TV.
HD starts from the resolution of 1280x720 till 1920x1080.
1280x720 commonly known as 720p is a standard HD resolution while 1920x1080 commonly known as 1080p is the full HD resolution.

17. You just lost me, what is the difference between 720p and 1080p when they are both HD?
The difference is of the pixels, how many pixels at the time are active on the screen. But to measure and view the difference between 720p and 1080p, you will need a LCD screen larger than 40".

18. So screen smaller than a 40" can't view in 1080p?
That's not the case. The 1080p resolution starts natively from a 24" screen, some screen even have them started from a 22".

19. So how do I know if a game is 1080p supported or just 720p supported?
Games have information on the back of their cases. You'll see boxes which will tell you about what a game supports like multiplayer etc.
At the very end of these boxes, the game tells which resolution it supports. Nearly all games of PS3 are in 720p and many games also support 720p + 1080p.

20. Coming back to games, which games would you recommend after first purchasing the PS3?
I'll personally suggest you to check out the exclusives first as where your thinking of awesomeness ends, theirs begin...
Check out Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted series, God Of War 3, Resistance series, inFAMOUS series, Killzone series etc.
I highly recommend MGS4 first to demonstrate the power of the PS3.

21. I have a 24" LCD, I don't have HDTV, so can I connect my PS3 to my LCD?
Absolutely. Depends on the LCD that is. PS3 has the output options of AV and HDMI.
If DVI port of your LCD is not HDCP compliant then PS3 won't work with it (HDMI to DVI cable/converter doesn't matter). Most (almost all) DVI ports on current LCDs are HDCP compliant. Only difference between DVI and HDMI is that HDMI carries sound as well as video while DVI carries only video.
If your LCD has DVI, still no worries, DVI offers the same quality as HDMI only it is not HDCP compliant.
You'll need a HDMI-DVI converter to setup PS3 on your DVI LCD.

22. I'm hearing PS3 comes in models, what models are we talking about?
As of 2010, PS3 now comes in a redesigned body and this redesigned line of PS3s is known as PS3 Slim.
The previous PS3 models were known as PS3 fats..
PS3 Slim now comes in two different models, 160GB and a 320GB model.
The only difference between the two models if of the HDD size and nothing else.
The difference between the Slims and the Fats is that Slims are free from any hardware fault like the YLOD (Yellow Light Of Death) which was present in the Fat models that if they overheat, the motherboard would just die and a yellow light will start blinking instead of a normal operation. So Slims are reliable unquestionably.

23. Can I know the prices for these models here in Pakistan?
Price. Price. Price.
We cannot quote you a price for a PS3 model as prices tend to fluctuate according to the value of dollar. We can only quote estimates for you so that you can have an idea about the price range.

24. So? Estimate?
PS3 160GB models are estimated to be anywhere between Rs.32,000-34,000~ and the 320GB models are estimated to be Rs.36,000-38,000~

25. I heard the PS3s controllers don't have vibration feedback? Is that really true?
If you would've asked this question at the time of PS3 launch then our answer would've been yes. The first line of controllers that were released with the PS3 were known as SIXAXIS, they boast six axes for motion gaming right in the controller, but the rumble feature had to be removed due to a patent law.
But with the release of MGS4 in 2008, DualShock 3s were announced which brought back the vibration feedback with it plus all the SIXAXIS features.
Now every game bein released supports vibration feedback.

26. What is this MOVE I keep hearing about?
MOVE is an extra peripheral for the PS3. It is PS3's step into motion gaming. You can use it to play using motion. It has vibration feedback and button too !

27. Okay, so how does this all work out? Do I need extra accessories to use MOVE?
Yes, as a matter of fact you do need extra accessories like the PS Eye and PS MOVE itself. These are the required ones. Other additional accessories such as a Navi-controller, a sharpshooter etc are optional.

28. So how much does this all cost?
Like we said before, this is Pakistan, and prices tend to fluctuate in accordance with the dollar so we can only estimate the prices.
Sony made a smart move by bringing MOVE into pieces...
You can purchase all the required components separately or together in a bundle.
This is that if someone already has a PS Eye, they only need to buy the PS MOVE to jump into motion gaming.
Whereas bundles includes both PS Eye and PS Move with cable for charging, a wrist strap and a starter disk containing demos for the PS MOVE.
PS MOVE alone should cost you somewhere between Rs.3200-3500.
PS Eye should cost you around Rs.1500-2000.

29. Alright so what Region is most popular here in Pakistan?
Region 2.
Region 2 console and games are rightly priced here in Pakistan and are cheaper than the Region 1 console and games.
Region 3 is by far the cheapest of them all.

30. How can I buy stuff from the PS Store?
You can get PS Network Cards or PSN Cards to top up your account to buy stuff from the PS Store.

31. I have a credit card so can I use it to buy the stuff from PS Store?
Sadly, no. Since Pakistan is not an official country in the Playstation world, you cannot link your Pakistani credit card or any other credit card for that matter except for the credit card in the same country.
meaning if your account is of Region 1 USA, you can only link a USA credit card to that account and not any other country's...

32. Help ! I just switched from HDMI output to composite output and nothing would show up on the screen even with the PS3 turned on ! What should I do?
Calm down no need to panic, you just need to reset the video settings on your PS3.
To reset do the following steps:
i. Turn off your PS3 if it's turned on otherwise skip to below.
ii. Turn on your PS3 using the power button on it and keep holding it down.
iii. After you hear PS3 booting up, you will hear the booting beep and another beep after 5 seconds.
iv. After hearing the 2nd beep, release the power button and there you go, video settings resetted.

32. If I don't use my PSN account for a long time, will it shut down?
No, as far as accounts are concerned, they don't have an expiry date on them.
So even if you decide to game after a year, your account will be as is.

33. When I buy a PS3, what will be in the box, what comes with it?
You'll get:
1x PS3 Entertainment System
1x DualShock 3 controller
1x AV Cable
1x USB Cable for charging the controller
1x SCART converter
1x Printed Manuals

34. Can I update the Firmware of the PS3 using any external storage device?
Yes you can. Infact this method is recommended for those areas which suffer from heavy loadshedding or if you have a slow internet connection and know that you won't be able to update in time before the loadshedding kicks in.
You can find the latest firmwares on: Sony PlayStation®: PS3 or Official PlayStation website

35. Which method is the best to play online, wired or wireless?
Wired connections are the best as they are directly connected to the PS3 and no fear of connection breaking or intereference from any other device.
However, wireless connection itself ain't bad, if you can get >80% signals, you're online experience will be smooth, heck 80% is a large number even at 50% you can play smoothly.

Very nice guide. However, there are some points that need revision in my opinion.

Secondly, no warranty is offered here in Pakistan for the PS3, as according to Sony, PS3 hasn't been officially launched in Pakistan.
You do get warranty if you buy PS3 from Sony centre.

It is the cheapest BLU-RAY player in the market,
No, it's not. It was at the time of launch, but not any more.

That is because PAL works better here.
How? In what way does it WORK better than PS3 of any other region?

For PSN IDs, Region 2 games and Region 2 IDs give you better pings and connections online if there's no Server Changing within the game.

The SD televisions of ours here support PAL better because of all that Europe ruling and all that.

If anyone remembers correctly or if anyone has experienced it, there used to come a converter for PSone/PS2 which converted PAL to NTSC TVs in order to show colours and that properly for that TV set.

Plus, if Sony Centers are giving you warranty here then I'm pretty sure they are giving away a Region 2 PS3.

That's because you were watching pirated BRRIP movie on your PS3.
There's still no way to remove the lock, so just continue watching it on PC or so.

These locks are mostly found on Sony Pictures Entertainment or its subsidiary Columbia Pictures movies like The Other Guys, Resident Evil: Afterlife etc...

Let me clarify what you wrote:

1. You have a Region 2 Far Cry 2 game.
2. When you try to play it on your PS3, it says required video settings or something...
3. But when you insert and try to play your cosuin's Far Cry 2 game which is Region 3, it works.
4. You have a NTSC TV.

Correct?

Now try this:

1. Find out if your TV can output PAL. Go to your TV's settings and change the output to PAL.
2. Insert and run your Region 2 game now and it will work correctly.

This is happening because the Region 2 game doesn't have the option to output the game in NTSC. And since your TV is NTSC then you'll need to switch the output to PAL to play it.

There's no easy way for it, you either need a laptop with WIFI so you can make it a hotspot for PS3 to connect to, or you need a router...

In anycase try this and see if it helps:

Hi gamers !!!

Well I am new to the forum, and this is my first post, and I expect the most efficient and effective solution to my problem.

I have bought PS3 just 2 weeks ago, and I have started playing COD- Blackops. Now the problem is that I dont get good signals in the lobby, most of the time I get red bar. I am using PTCL 4mb connection, and I am using wired connection with PS3 directly connected to PTCL Modem(which is also a wifi router Model # AN1020-25).

There are 3 problems as I see it:
1- I don't get good speed, and online games lag alot... with one single bar which is red...
2- UPnP not available
3- NAT Type 'Moderate'. Which I think should be 'Open' in order to easily connect with other players.

I have already gone through the DMZ and Internet Download speed Topics and I have tried both.
The DMZ solution solved the NAT problem, I got NAT type 'Open'. Also please tell me how do I get get ports forwarded ? What are the port numbers for Blackops ? I called PTCL once and they told me I need to tell them the ports which I want open... so I dont know where to get the port numbers of Blackops or other games...
Is DMZ the ONLY solution to getting the NAT Type 'Open' ?

And I also used the download speed option for which I used Privoxy and used Proxy in PS3 did not do any good to the lag problem, i think it is only for downloading content.

So, please guys, help me, what to do ? How can I get good ping, how can I get more than just 1 red bar ? How can I be host of
a game in the lobby ?

And as far as my internet connection speed is concerned, it is working fine. I checked speed at speedtest.net, and also I use torrent downloads and I get 400kb/sec download speed.

Hoping for a quick and effective response from an expert.

Thanks.

Hi and Welcome to the forums.

Good to know that you've gone through the guides. Since your PS3 is in DMZ mode, you don't need to forward ports because all ports to your PS3's IP address are already open. But if you insist here are the port numbers for Call of Duty Black Ops on PS3

PS3 Call of Duty - Black Ops
TCP 80-81, 443, 5223, 3074
UDP 81, 2005, 3074, 3075, 3478
I have a couple of questions for you so we can get through your problem.

1. How far is your home from your exchange office?
2. Can you post screenshots of your router's config page. Specifically Advanced Settings > WAN and Advanced Settings > LAN

I am more or less in the same boat as you are. But I get 2 (yellow) bars on average.

PTCL Modem(which is also a wifi router Model # AN1020-25)
This is primarily where the problem lies. This router is not suitable for gaming.

Thank you Muaaz for a prompt reply.

Some of my friends told me that I should not use DMZ, thats why I asked for ports. Now that you have shared the ports with me,
I need to call PTCL and tell them to open these ports right ? This is the procedure ? If I am missing something plz guide me.

Answers to your questions :

1- The PTCL Exchange of my Area is not very far from my home, it is around 1.5 or 2 km max.

2- SCs:

http://db.tt/rmlBjW0N

http://db.tt/3cawfrBY

http://db.tt/rbD33HNS

http://db.tt/niC310Tc

If you need any more information to help me out then plz ask me.

And... you said that the model of my modem is not appropriate for gaming then what should I do ? Which model should I get ? Will PTCL change my modem ? Other models of their modems has UPnP option ?

1. 1.5-2 kilometers is not that far.

2. DMZ is not harmful for PS3, its harmful for your PC only. If you enable DMZ on your PS3 you will get better games.

3. Your modem stats seem perfectly fine to me.

4. Uncheck "Enable UPnP". That should bring some improvement, if your Internet stops working revert the change.

5. PTCL will replace your modem with the very same one, that is, if they even agree to do so. My advice, get a good D-Link or Linksys router. It will set you back about 4-5k but it really beats paying Rs. 100 per month for this piece of crap mode.

6. DMZ/Port Forwarding works better for games instead of UPnP.

7. Since you already have NAT Type OPEN, you don't need port forwarding or UPnP.

Many bluetooth 1.1, 1.2 and 2.0 will work with PS3.
Still for a reference list, check here:
List of Bluetooth headsets compatible with PlayStation 3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The bluetooth headset will only be used for chatting purposes only. It won't be able to output game sounds so be clear on this.

Secondly, Uncharted 2 MP will work without an online pass.
Online passes were introduced last year, so you're good to go with older titles that do not come with online passes.

Ok, I will continue to use DMZ. With DMZ I get NAT Type open. In point # 4 u told me to disable UPnP, from PS3? Why ? In many places I read it is a good thing ( I really
dont know what it is).

And if I get a Linksys DSL router, I will have to call PTCL customer service to set it up ? for all their configurations ? or it will be simple enough for me to do it ? (with your help ofcourse)

I have tried many things, and I wont stop before I have tried everything... I hope to get good signals... its no fun to play with 1 red bar...

thanks.

Online session is enabled for UBL. I have an active subscription with my NayaPay card (it is already added to Google Payment Methods).

  • B Baghi:
did you try setting up Google Payments? For UBL you may have to get it enabled for internet transactions, Naya should work without it!

I tried both NayaPay, and UBL, but I keep getting "correct country selected..." error. I already have PK set there 🤦‍♂️

Did y'all see the new Assassin's Creed trailer? They finally made a AC set in Japan & then they put a negro as the male protagonist. Ubisoft is taking cues from Disney, and it isn't gonna end well for them, just like Disney. Go woke, go broke!
