[h=1]Suicide Squad Opens in the U.S. with $20 Million Thursday Night[/h]

Leading up to the theatrical release of DC Extended Universe film Suicide Squad from director David Ayer (Fury), the early critical reception for Warner Bros. Pictures’ comic book movie has been overall mixed-to-negative. After facing said backlash against the film’s overall quality and specific merits and flaws, the cast and crew have come out in defense of Ayer’s latest ahead of the production’s theatrical release.
In particular, Ayer was quick to defend the film from any naysayers, making a concerted effort to make it known that the theatrical cut of the film was the cut that he wanted shown in theaters – in response to reports of studio meddling behind the scenes. And after garnering $8.1 million in a total of seven international markets so far, projections for a $140 million domestic opening weekend may still be within reach for the comic book caper.
According to Variety, Ayer’s Suicide Squad opened with $20.5 million at the box office during its Thursday night preview showings, setting a record for an August theatrical release and placing it as the 13th biggest preview showing on record. If everything continues to go as well as early numbers suggest, WB is expected to generate a grand total of $125 million over the weekend in 4,250 theaters domestically (with an additional $100 million being generated overseas in 57 markets).

Standing beside fellow DCEU release Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (which accrued a grand total of $870 million worldwide despite mixed/negative reviews), Suicide Squad may yet end up ranking among the highest-grossing comic book movies of all time. At the time of writing this, Ayer’s film is outranked only by The Dark Knight Rises with a $30.6 million opening night and Batman V Superman with a $27.7 million opening night. However, Suicide Squad has now unseated former August release date titan Guardians of the Galaxy (which took in $11.2 million on its Thursday opening night).
It would appear as though fans of the original DC Comics property will be flocking to theaters to see Suicide Squad despite theweakcriticalword of mouth spread before the movie’s release. Plus, seeing as how the only direct competition to Ayer’s latest is the Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black) directed comedy Nine Lives, it seems fairly certain that the latest DCEU venture will pay off big for those viewers thoroughly invested in the history behind the characters; not to mention, anyone swayed by the heavily marketed hype leading up to the film’s late summer release.

Suicide Squad
is now in theaters, and will be followed by Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017; Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash and Batman solo movie are currently without release dates.

[h=1]Suicide Squad Heading For $140 Million Opening Weekend[/h]

Director Zack Snyder’s 2013 reboot of the Superman movie franchise, Man of Steel, has since kicked off what is now known as the DC Extended Universe: a cinematic universe that also now encompasses Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and David Ayer’s newly-released Suicide Squad. While these DCEU films have thus far done well enough at the box office, no doubt those reading this are aware that these movies’ overall critical receptions have been mixed-to-negative, prompting decidedly polarizing responses as a result.
All that hullaballoo isn’t making a difference with Suicide Squad so far, though. Ayer’s DC villain team-up adventure is currently enjoying quite the strong opening weekend. It has already broken records with its $20.5M Thursday night opening in August, beating out the previous record holder: Marvel Studio’s 2014 film release, Guardians of the Galaxy.
Now Variety is re-affirming previous estimates that Suicide Squad is set for a U.S. box office opening weekend total of around $140 million. Suicide Squad has been looking to open strongly for some time now, but that $140 million number has always been the high end of what was expected from the film, commercially-speaking.

At this point, the real test of success will be how strong the film’s legs are in the following weeks. Opening weekends are quite important for a film’s success, but poor word-of-mouth can be detrimental to a movie’s draw to casual audiences in the subsequent weeks. Batman V Superman, for example, had a strong opening weekend of $170M (the sixth highest ever) but had a 68% drop-off in its second weekend, leading to an overall box office run that fell short of Warner Bros. Pictures’ expectations (comparative to the film’s budget and potential).
Fortunately for WB, PostTrak exit poll data suggests that so far 81% of viewers have had a positive view of Suicide Squad after seeing it during its opening weekend. This may go a long way to bringing in on-the-fence viewers in during the less crowded weeks to come in August. Competition also wasn’t very strong right after Batman V Superman opened in theaters either, so it remains to be seen if history does (or does not) repeat itself with Suicide Squad in that respect.

Suicide Squad Lands $65 Million At Friday Box Office

The wave of mostly negative reviews and controversy about alleged studio meddling wasn’t going to prevent Suicide Squad from becoming a rare bona fide box office hit this summer. Warner Bros. had put together a stellar marketing campaign that was gleefully kinetic in its execution, making the latest from director David Ayer seem like a fun romp through the DC Extended Universe. Even as the review embargo lifted and terms like “messy” and “choppy” were used to describe the movie, it still set records for most ticket pre-sales in August, indicating that audience interest remained high.
Suicide Squad pulled in $20 million domestically just from Thursday night preview screenings, setting the stage for a $140 million debut – the high end of its commercial projections. As the studio awaits the final tally for the weekend, they’ve already made their way into the history books, shattering the August opening day mark by a considerable margin.
Per Box Office Mojo, Suicide Squad grossed $65.1 million on Friday, August 5. Those numbers include the money made from the Thursday night showings. To put that figure in perspective, Guardians of the Galaxy previously held the August opening day record with a far more modest $37.8 million, en route to a $94.3 million first weekend. Even if Suicide Squad sees a slight decrease in business over the next couple of days due to mixed word-of-mouth, it should still be able to set a new all-time high for August opening weekend.

Suicide Squad is also performing very well internationally, as the worldwide total currently stands at $129.7 million. The film’s production budget (which typically does not include marketing costs) was estimated to be around $175 million, so there’s a chance the movie makes back all of those costs in just a single weekend. The villain team-up is all but guaranteed to join the ranks of Captain America: Civil War, Finding Dory, and The Secret Life of Pets as unbridled financial successes. Many tentpoles have struggled at the box office this year, even those that were well-received. Star Trek Beyond, which is currently in its third week of release, has made just $176.6 million globally on a $185 million budget.
It was always expected Suicide Squad would post high totals as it first entered theaters. The bigger question now is how strong its legs will be. One only has to look at the noticeable drop-off Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice saw during its second weekend for a possible comparison. Like its DCEU predecessors, Suicide Squad has plenty of fans, but there are also many who didn’t like the film. Casual audiences who weren’t sold on the Worst. Heroes. Ever. may choose to wait until home media, opting for other projects like Sausage Party or Pete’s Dragon, both of which are getting positive reviews. This will be interesting to keep track of.
In the meantime, WB has reason to celebrate. While the critical reaction to Suicide Squad was hardly what they were hoping for, they can take solace in the fact that moviegoers were thrilled to see these characters on the big screen, and the introductions of fan-favorites such as the Joker, Harley Quinn, and Deadshot pave the way for them to appear in future installments. The general consensus was that the cast of Suicide Squad was great, they were just let down by the story around them. With a tighter script for Suicide Squad 2, maybe a sequel can deliver on all cylinders.

[h=1]Suicide Squad Opening Weekend Projections Increase to $147 Million[/h]

The latest installment of the DC Extended Universe, Suicide Squad, opened this week with an impressive first-day box office haul of $20.5 million on Thursday night previews alone, totaling out to a $65 million Friday total. By the weekend’s close, David Ayer’s bad-guys-doing-kind-of-good action blockbuster may even topple August opening records previously set by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Suicide Squad may be getting mixed reviews for various reasons, but with a huge turnout of female viewers and the infamy of its key characters, the box office predictions all fall between $147 to $150 million for the film’s opening weekend. The film cost Warner Bros. a total of $175 million to make, and with international totals already at $64.6 million, the studio is fast on its way to making a profit. The question then becomes: will it hold up better than its predecessor in the coming weeks?
Earlier this year, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice also went above expectation on its opening weekend. The film brought in a total of $166 million upon its opening, but ticket sales dropped rapidly over the following weeks, closing the movie out at around $870 million worldwide. Support in the face of the franchise’s previous adversity seems to be weighing out reviews that have found the film otherwise unimpressive — and it’s all showing in the money this time around.

Variety reports that Fandango saw Suicide Squad pre-sales rise to their highest of all time, knocking Guardians of the Galaxy out of its previous top spot. The movie opens against pretty soft competition, too: Kevin Spacey’s Nine Lives, co-starring Christopher Walken, is its only major rival for this weekend’s opening competition.
The film’s popularity among young viewers and women also stands out among the crowd, with ladies making up 49 percent of the viewing audience and ticket buyers under 18 making up 28 percent of the sales. While some number crunchers seem bewildered, fans certainly aren’t. The film’s diverse roster gives it a chance to put a rare focus on Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn (already a popular character in her own right) along with incredible actors like Will Smith and Viola Davis in the roles of Deadshot and Amanda Waller, respectively. While fans only got a strange, short glimpse of Jared Leto’s Joker, Suicide Squad ultimately up set many story lines within the big screen universe, and featured cameos of other beloved characters as well.
No matter how disappointing certain aspects of the movie might be for some, Suicide Squad at least exists as a turning point in several ways for the universe. Now it’s up to Wonder Woman to bring us on home.
Suicide Squad is now in theaters, set to be followed by Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017; Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. [h=1]Suicide Squad Has the Biggest August Opening of All Time[/h]

Suicide Squad, the latest cinematic installment in the DC Extended Universe, has received largely mixed-to-negative reviews, enough so to put it in the same Rotten Tomatoes score bracket (25-30%) as this year’s other DCEU film, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The David Ayer-helmed film has been praised for certain elements (in particular, its characters), but derided for most everything else: the plot, visual style, the underuse of Jared Leto’s Joker character, you name it.
How the critical reception affects the film’s box office run is a question that will have to be answered in the long run, as months of marketing that built up Suicide Squad as a must-see movie event was simply always going to be too strong to be deterred by the response from critics – during opening weekend, that is. In fact, Suicide Squad has long been tracking for a huge box office opening- and now we know those projections were correct.
Suicide Squad earned $135 million domestically during its opening weekend, according to box office figures that are being reported by multiple outlets (Deadline among them). The performance amounts to the biggest August opening weekend at the U.S. box office of all time, breaking the previous record set by Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 ($94.3 million).
The box office haul also makes Suicide Squad the fourth film of 2016 to open with more than $100 million, following Captain America: Civil War, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Finding Dory. It also puts Warner Bros. Pictures over $1 billion in box office for the year, helped set a new overall industry box office record for the month of August, and served as the highest opening of Will Smith’s career, while also halting the star’s recent box office losing streak.

That opening weekend performance is good news for Suicide Squad – though, the film did come in below the $140 million tracking figure that was most recently reported. Ayer’s DCEU film ultimately didn’t fly as high as Batman V Superman, and saw its box office haul drop 40-41 percent from Friday to Saturday. And don’t forget that Batman V Superman‘s box office performance saw steep declines from week to week, attributed at least in part to weak word of mouth among filmgoers.
That said, $135 million is $135 million and is still one of the better openings of the year. Whether or not Suicide Squad goes the way of Batman V Superman in the long run, and what that means for the future of DCEU, that remains to be seen.

[h=1]Jared Leto Wants R-Rated Suicide Squad; Talks Deleted Joker Scenes[/h]

Suicide Squad has kicked off a lot of debate since it opened this past weekend: despite the fact that it saw a precipitious decline from Friday to Saturday, it still managed to amass an $135 million opening weekend, breaking records in the process.
But there are the negative reviews to consider, some of which call attention to the film’s issues with pacing and tone – the result, rumors say, of almost-obsessive studio tinkering. The purported list of scenes that were either removed or altered for the theatrical cut is quite extensive, and it seems to focus heavily on the Joker’s (Jared Leto) material (which may account for his roughly 10-minute showing in the finished film).
Sitting down to talk with BBC Radio 1 for the British swing of the Suicide Squad press tour (via Batman News), Leto opens up about all the scenes that he says he poured his heart and soul into – they’re his “favorite work he’s ever done in a movie,” and he claims there’s enough there for an entire Joker film to be constructed:
“I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene that it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity, because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie.”

What’s more, the man behind the newest Clown Prince of Crime revealed he had pushed director David Ayer for an R rating during production, saying that “it felt like, if a film was ever going to be rated R, it should be the one about the villains.”
This is sure to increase desire among fans to get their hands on an “ultimate cut” of the movie, just as Batman V Superman received earlier this year, showcasing all of the additional footage Leto generated – especially if most of that material depicts a different relationship between Mr. J and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), one that is decidedly more savage and abusive in nature, as the rumor mill has been churning out over the weekend. This would not only allow Leto’s hard work to bear more fruit, it would also reveal Ayer’s original intention behind his DC Extended Universe installment.
Unfortunately, it appears that such a director’s cut isn’t meant to be – for the time being, at least – and this will doubtlessly only fan the flames of debate surrounding the film. Would the movie have benefited from more of the Joker, even though Leto’s performance itself has been the source of controversy? Would an R rating have resulted in a superior finished product, or would it have doubled down on the film’s perceived flaws?
You can listen to the entire Jared Leto interview below:

Well it is a bit unfair to compare ledger and leto's joker since they are a bit different. Ledger's joker is the one that Nolan wanted while Leto's joker is more true to the comic book adaptation. That being said, from what I have heard, Ledger's performance as the joker was better than Leto's BUT the latter was more scarier and more crazy than the former.
Still 10 minutes is not enough to judge it...especially since the better joker scenes were cut from the theatrical release.

[h=1]Suicide Squad Earns $300 Million at Global Box Office, Breaks New Record[/h]

In a manner quite similar to the reception received by Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this year, David Ayer’s DCEU film Suicide Squad has been absolutely ravaged by critics, and currently sits at a mere 26 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, also similar to what happened with BVS, the reaction to Squad from fans has trended a lot more positive, with a box office take to match.
Squad opened domestically to the tune of $135 million, setting a new all-time record for August opening totals, and managing to handily surpass previous record holder Guardians of the Galaxy’s $94 million 2014 haul. While it remains to be seen how much of an effect the negative reviews have on Suicide Squad’s long term box office prospects, for right now, the film doesn’t look to be slowing down much financially.
According to Deadline, Suicide Squad has now earned over $326 million worldwide, in less than one week of theatrical release. For the record, $161 million of that total was earned domestically. As part of this good fortune, Squad has also set another record. Earning $14.2 million on Tuesday sets Squad as the all-time largest earner on a Tuesday in August, once again knocking off previous record holder Guardians of the Galaxy. Additionally, Squad beat the Tuesday totals for fellow superhero blockbusters Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and its DCEU predecessor Batman V Superman.

The good news for Suicide Squad isn’t over either, as industry forecasters are predicting that the film will likely bring in another $50 million plus in its second weekend, easily retaining the #1 spot. That said, it’s doubtful Squad manages to ultimately outdo the domestic totals of either BVS or Man of Steel, the former being $330 million and the latter being $291 million. Then again, the budget for Squad was substantially lower than either of those movies, presumably due to characters like Harley Quinn and Deadshot not possessing the name recognition and star power of American icons like Batman and Superman.
With the bad reviews reportedly serving as motivation for the cast and crew of Justice League to improve the DCEU’s critical fortunes, it’ll be interesting to see what specific lessons DC and Warner Bros. take from the complaints against Squad. Either way, it’s hard to imagine that the film won’t at least turn a profit at this point, albeit possibly not a huge one.

The 'secret' behind the Joker’s facial tattoo? Batman

David Ayer shares his head-canon

Spoiler: show

Stay Connected. Follow Polygon Now!
×
The Joker’s metrosexual-via-Hot-Topic look in Suicide Squad has been controversial since the very first picture was released, and director David Ayer has finally shared a bit of the logic behind the facial tattoos and dental work.
"This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection," Ayer told Empire. "But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, 'You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.' That’s where the grill comes from."

This lines up with the Robin suit we see in Batman v Superman and Bruce Wayne’s crack about "clowns" from that movie. It’s still a little jarring to think about the Joker looking at his wreckage of a face and deciding to go with a tattoo that’s so on the nose.
So this may not be canon in the film series, but it’s still a fun detail. Still no answers on the multiple "Ha Ha Ha’s" tattooed on the Joker’s body, however.

Watched Suicide Squad, here are my thoughts, may contain spoilers, so proceed with caution

This movie has issues, but it's nowhere bad as critics are making it out to be. I'll focus on the positives, the Actors and their acting were awesome. Margot Robbie stole it as Harley, Will Smith was pretty good as Deadshot, El Diablo, and Jai Courtney as Boomerang were also pretty awesome. I liked how Boomerang keeps a stuff toy with him lol. Joker was good, from the small bits we saw of him. Voila Davis was decent as Amanda Waller, though i still prefer Arrow's version. The music was spot on, and catchy. Action was good too. Humor was good also.

Positives:
+ Acting
+Music
+Tone
+ Good cast of characters like Harley, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo

Negatives are
- The whole story of a villain taking over the world feels generic. They have tons of comics history, and could have easily taken influence, to draw up one amazing story. So plot was weak, repetitive, and kinda boring.
- Barely screentime for Katana, while other squad members got it.
- Less Joker, which is disappointing, since he was marketed to be a major part of the movie.
- Poor Editing, and the movie pacing really felt off, as it would really rush in scenes.
- Movie was short, and could have easily gone to the 2hr 30 mins marks, if the deleted scenes were intact.

Movie had potential, to be really good, but it's really a mess up part on WB. Let's hope they learnt some mistakes from the criticism of critics, like the weak plot, editing issues, you know issues which are relevant.

But Suicide Squad is definitely this year's best ComicBook movie released. Maybe even the best comic movie? I'm not sure myself. It is better than Batman vs Superman and Deadpool, that's for sure.

Critics were too harsh on it, but some criticism are justified, and it may help eventually creating a epic Suicide Squad 2 or the sequel. Let's hope Slade Wilson/Deathstroke is in the Sequel too.

My rating for the movie is a solid 8/10
