GAMEPLAY
At its core, Street Fighter X Tekken is a SF4 engine game, but it feels very different from the regular Street Fighter 4 series. Here are some features of the gameplay.
2 vs 2 battles: Street Fighter X Tekken is a team-based fighting game. That means you have 2 characters and so does the opponent. During the course of a match, both of you will switch your active character multiple times.
Tag: Pressing MP+MK at any time tags in your partner. This is essential as you have to lose all the health of only one character to lose the match. Note that raw tags are not safe, and the opponent can punish your character while he/she runs away, your partner when he comes in, or both of them if the opponent gets lucky.
Cross Rush: Cross Rush is the 'chain attack' of SFxT. You can chain attacks from weaker to stronger and chain straight into a launcher. You can do this by quickly tapping LP, MP, HP, HP or LK, MK, HK, HK or a combination of light, medium and heavy punches and kicks. Ending with the launcher tags in your partner and you can continue the combo for huge damage. You can only do this one time in a combo. ie: Your partner cannot tag you back with a chain. Takes no meter.
Tag Cancels: One of the most fun and important aspects of the gameplay. This is the Focus Attack of SFxT. Anytime the opponent blocks or gets hit by any normal or special move, you can press MP+MK to tag in your partner. This can be used defensively (Tag in your partner after doing a wakeup DP, to make the DP safe), for pressure (do a move with huge blockstun like a tatsumaki, then tag in your partner for mixups), or offensively (catch your opponent in a combo, then tag mid combo for huge juggles). As long as you have meter, you can keep tag cancelling moves into each other and get long juggles. This takes away 1 bar of meter.
Chargeable Special Moves: Each character has a certain move that can be charged by holding the motion. There are three levels of charging. Level 1 is when you hold it and let it go soon. This adds no extra properties to the special, but just acts like a delayed special. However, in certain cases like Zangief, the charging animation has super armor, and hence even a level 1 charge can be deadly. A level 2 charge happens when you see a lightning bolt above your character's head. If you let go of the buttons, your character will do an EX move of the special. This is basically a free EX move. Note that dash cancelling out of a level 2 charge makes your next move get counterhit properties. This is like charging up by pressing 1+2+3+4 in Tekken.
A level 3 charge leads to an automatic free super art.
EX Moves: EX moves are back, and they take 1 meter. Anytime doing a special move with 2 buttons instead of 1 will make it get special properties, like invulnerability, more priority, extra damage, wallbounce, groundbounce, etc.
Super Arts: Each character has a super that uses up 2 meters. Supers can do great damage and are thus excellent enders to combos.
Cross Arts: Done by QCFx2 + MP + MK, these are tag supers that take up all 3 meters of the super guage. Your active character initiates the move, does a motion, passes on to their partner who does their super move, and then the partner becomes the active character. Does great damage, eats up all your opponent's recoverable health, and automatically tags into your partner. Very useful.
Cross Assault: Cross Assault takes away all 3 meters and brings your partner onto the screen, turning it into a 2 vs 1 situation for some time. This isn't very useful however, since your partner is controlled by the CPU. This can become very useful in 2 player vs 2 player mode.
Pandora Mode: Pandora mode is a last resort move available when your active character has <25% health. Pressing down, down + MP + MK "kills" your active character and tags in your partner. This is a 0 frame activation. Your character gets infinite meter during Pandora, but they die if they cannot kill the opponent during 7-8 seconds. Also, pandora activation animation doesn't pause the match timer, and supers don't pause the pandora timer, so activating pandora and connecting a long super isn't a good idea. Doesn't seem too useful right now but it has potential.
Gems: Customize your characters by picking offensive, defensive or assists gems that change the way your character plays to suit your playstyle. The right gem combination can be the difference between victory and defeat.
