hamidkhatri! Haha! Congratulations brother ;) You got the good one.

How much you paid for it btw? And what about the warranty? Did you get the Marsons Warranty Card with it?

Marsons provide 2 Years of warranty with their warranty card.

But I agree with you. You didn't have much options :) Once again, heartiest congratulations on the drive.

I have ordered one today, Now lets pray its correct part no and 2 Platter drive. Seems like very good bang for buck value.
Please don't do that.

If you are placing an order, wherever you are placing it ... Kindly Confirm the:
- First 3 Numbers of the Serial Number (MUST start with Z1Exxxx)
- Part Number
- Firmware of the Drive
- Picture (if possible) ... showing that physical proof
- The Date (code written on the HDD)
- Ask for Warranty Card and CONFIRM if the are giving 2 years of warranty because this specific model does come with 2 years of warranty.

Its for your own safety. If you are not ready to do this much hassle, then we only pray that you get the intended drive :)

I actually asked for the information, including Serial no and Part no. However I am not sure about 2 year warranty since I have ordered locally. I did went through Seagate forums about Confirming the correct model. i.e 1 Means 1TB and E means 4 heads. I will not buy the drive if the intended drive is more than 2 platters. Stuff like this is not readily available in shops in RWP so one has to rely on some guess work.

Whats concerning is all new 1TB drives available in market are ST3100054AS, however I have two 1TB and both are ST31000528AS. With Firmware CC49.

Seagate 2TB ST2000DM001 14th Gen (7200.14) - Price/Performance KING ... WE HAVE IT PEOPLE, FINALLY!!

Provided I can find the correct serial no or part no, is this drive worth a final go, for general storage (windows are on SSD.)

AlienX yup bro its gr8 drive to store data and since u have ssd for OS then thats excelent.
In my case i wil use it for OS as well as storage, wil sell my prevous 500gb. I can easily wait 3-4min for windows to load than to spend 6k-10k for ssd :)

Got one drive today, There were 4 of these in the shop. 2 With Z1F serial and 2 with Z1E serial. The latter had deeper groove on top right as compared to others.

So I got the one with Z1Exxxx serial with 2 Years warranty. Glad I found this thread.

@abobobilly Thanks for your guidance.

The Drive is parking heads too often. My older 1TB Drives are dead silent but this new one is not as silent. Every time I access it after some time there is a faint clunk, I have turn off hard disk to off in windows but seems like drive is doing power management on its own.

Mine is on latest Firmware though CC4H, came with it. Manufacture date is nov 2012. And serial is correct for 1TB/Platter.

Otherwise drive is working just fine.

It was mentioned here, but this company doesn't seem to realize that it's a problem and unlike WD, still hasn't released a *fix* for it yet.

No its not that chirp. I went through that forum twice. Its a clunk, a very typical sound which heads make when parking and moving. Although mine came with latest firmware but still not completely silent. I have copied data to it now. Well lets see how well this drive works.

Technically speaking Any drive can have these sounds, even WD Black ones. Personally I would do much phateek now. The drive has 2 year warranty. All I need to care about is to keep a backup of my important data.

*chirp* or *clunk* don't matter, this is what matters :

( copied from ngohq.com )
..... According to an in-house investigation and user reports', some software and operating systems are incompatible with the Intellipark feature causing endless head parking movement as the HDD continuously goes in/out of idle mode. This abnormal behavior creates stress on the HDD and that could lead to the following issues:

• Loud clunking/clicking/buzzing noises every few seconds.
• Artificially increases the number of load-unload cycles in S.M.A.R.T.
• Possibly shortens life-time of the HDD.
• Possibly reduces performance of the HDD.
-
The behaviour you mentioned - accessing the drive after sometime causing clunk - is very much the same as WD's drives with Intellipark, in which the heads park after a mere 8 seconds causing unnecessary parking/unparking of the heads.

I believe all modern Seagate and WD hard drives have this APM feature. So we are left with either accepting it as a calculated risk or wait for seagate to update the firmware to increase the value of idle time before parking heads. Personally I have yet to see a hard drive to fail due to load/unload cycles. Some of 5 year old or even 7 year old drives have been through much worse time testing and still working fine.

The only annoying thing is a click every now and then which I suppose will get used to in some days.

Changing or RMA is useless, I may end up having a worse drive, WD or Seagate. Unfortunately we have only these two choices and Samsung has been bought by Seagate so as Maxtor. If WD intellipark feature is there so as APM on Seagate.

BTW I have yet to find a single person on internet without this chirp. There are workarounds but I work with linux and windows alike. I suppose I will have to put up with a workaround.

I hope MB manufatures implement this feature in BIOS to control power management features of HDD.

The clicking noise you hear from this hard drive is heads parking in idle state. This is a Laptop feature and both Seagate and WD are being lunatics and implementing this feature on desktop hard drives to conform to energy consumption on servers where hundreds of hard drives are being used. Where an earthquake can cause surface damage so heads are parked when not in I/O. Similarly you can hear it on Laptop (Makes sense to park heads) as well as external Hard Drives (Also makes sense). But on desktop is useless feature as we have GPUs and Overclocked CPUs to drain much more power already. May be Media center downloading PCs can benefit which are 24hr On as these drives are universal unlike WD which make three models for different usage.

WD Green Drives always have this feature so as Cavier Black Drives. I am not sure how a gaming person can hear it those clicks anyway :). Some people work in quiet environment so notice is as being out of place sound.

There are no of ulities which turns off this feature to avoid excessive wear on motor and head mechanism. Like hdparm, QuiteHDD, CrystalDiskinfo. All of these can disable APM feature of these hard drives.

This is not a design fault or drive being bad. HDD manufactures have to conform to industry standards. Imagine 5000 Hard Drives running and amount of power drain their heads can cause when not in idle.
