I joined in '13, so I have no idea who any of these people are. But from the way you're all describing it, sounds like PG used to be something big back in the day.

So...what happened?

I joined in early '11, but I do not recognize any of the username at all, but I remember there used to be a guy named sunny945 something, he was good but I seldom see him now. But this will always happen, there will be a time when we also won't be active anymore, life does not leaves anybody virgin.

No one actually leaves (some do though, or are forced :p)

Life just catches on. Interest changes. Responsibilities increase. etc.

I have no idea though why Chandoo has stopped posting here. AFAIK he is still very much active in another popular gaming forum so there's that.

It's kinda sad that Chandoo would chose Gaf over PG but at the same time it's kinda of understandable, Games discussion is kinda dying over here.

Early members were extremely passionate about PakGamers, back when this was a budding platform. I hope you get the chance one day to read the brainstorming and ideas that were discussed within the Team then. It emanated positivity which reflected in forum activity.

So...what happened?
A few factors which, I think, played a role (in particular order):

  1. Loss of motivation
  2. Life catching up
  3. The "Marketplace" effect
  4. Issues with the Administration

Point 1 is the most important factor, in my opinion. A lot can be said on the subject.

Impressive observation. Factor#1 has a lot to do with growing up. Some of the members were quite young at the time.

Piracy and facebook played a big part aswell

As things moved onto original ps4 and xbox one and pc games, gaming slowed down in pakistan, due to the cost factor. Most of the guys we mentioned (including me) used to play 100s of titles on ps2, xbox 360, pc and ps3 for a fraction of the price due availability of super cheap games..
A big part is also facebook, since people's percious "internet time" is fulfilled by facebook mostly these days.

I'm not sure I have a clear picture of this. Could you elaborate?

1. Loss of motivation

I guess that's evident looking at the current state of the forums even if I haven't seen what it used to be like. But the question is, why? Taking into consideration that the basic formula of the forums hasn't changed and there isn't any direct competition (none that I'm aware of, at least), it doesn't seem to explain the lack of enthusiasm.

2. Life catching up
This explains the inactivity of older members but what about the new bunch? If we're going by the law of averages, there should've been a fresh new batch of equally motivated people to replace the older ones, no?

The way I see it, there are 5 type of people being mentioned here.

People who just outright vanished without any prior notifications or news. That seems to be the majority

People who left on their own accord with their last known encounters well know here.

People who probably won't be getting a warm welcome if/when they come back.

People who left for the wrong reasons. Somethings went wrong, a bit too personal for them and that didn't workout well with them.

People who were forced by the vox populi into leaving.

Alan wake 2 is yet to recover it's development costs. Due to no physical release and no steam launch.
You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
