Done with the first two bosses.


A no-damage run against both seems doable with the double jump (air hike) skill, which I haven't unlocked as yet. It ought to be the first skill to unlock. Boss or otherwise, it's very useful, especially since the dodge roll has very few i-frames and is restricted to lock-on.

Also, WTF @ the sweet surrender devil breaker :hah:

on paper, 5.5% frame time spikes on xbx vs 2.5% on the pro presents itself as a slight difference, but in reality it isn't (for a game like dmc) when you consider how spread out these spikes are. The situation isn't ideal on the pro either, but i'll take 3% less spikes any day.

V plays just as how a modern Final Fantasy character should. There's plenty of strategy involved, as he's in control of multiple characters assigned to different buttons, while also evading incoming attacks and executing weakened enemies. Very well designed.

FFXV would've been so much fun if it had a similar combat system.


There was also a boss battle involving a similar looking horse in DMC3 IIRC.

So apparently there's a few things weird with the PC version.

1. The Denuvo-less exe seems to give people performance boosts of up to 20 FPS during game play in the same areas (THE FUCK !!)
2. The PC versions in-game settings are weird, according to DF's Alex, they mostly only seem to effect cut-scenes. (like blur etc).
3. Below is a texture comparison between Low, Medium and High. See if you can find a difference.

The crack has come, and so have I, strictly for the purpose of critical analysis :tv:


RE Engine games have always been pretty bad when it comes to scalability. The difference between the lowest and highest settings have been minor and I only recall volumetric lighting giving a nice boost to performance. Shadow data is (mostly) baked, same for AO, lighting setting makes minimal difference as well as textures and mesh quality.


RE Engine games look impressive during cut-scenes (the company doing facial animations is the one responsible for Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice) but the same level of quality doesn't extend to actual gameplay imo.

^ This seems a bit more regressive than RE2. RE2's options were pretty customizable with immediate differences notable in a lot of things.

I guess it's a different focus and different branch of Capcom's dev teams, but looks like the game will scale well across a range of hardware. Looking forward to playing it (hopefully) over the weekend.

playing dMc on my pc with an xbox controller was awesome back in the day.

anyways that fu**ing BS popped up on my screen aswell thanks to google and their shit search @Chandoo. urghhh remove that freaking video man

btw does anybody know if the uae version region 2 for ps4 is censored in anyway ? usually arabic versions are censored .. im getting the steelbook but its the uae version

OK. Up and running.

The game is surprisingly well optimized and/or light on requirements. Running it at 130% resolution scale @ 1080p with everything on High. Motion blur off, disabled DoF from config.ini and using standard SSAO. Some minor drops in cut-scenes but game play has not felt like it dropped once (though I've only played the Prologue chapter so far).

One nitpick, as great as the cut-scenes look, there is a very notable drop in fidelity from cut-scenes to game play. RE2 did not feel like this and felt like the exact same assets/lighting carried over. This feels more like 360/PS3 games where cut-scenes would use much higher precision lighting/character models etc compared to game play.

To my eyes, the game definitely didn't appear to be missing AO. It may be light, but the absence of the effect would've been very noticeable. Objects would appear visibly flat as you said and not a part of 3D space, which isn't the case here.

Sorry, but what do you by “no AO”? The games has got 3 AO options to choose from and all of them work during gameplay.
Backtrack to real Alex's previous post. He didn't say there was no AO setting, but that it wasn't in effect during gameplay (and that it was really obvious :p).

Real Alex = 0, Wise Alex = 1 :p

That statement is still accurate as of today unless you can name someone better :p

I don't know, looking at these screenshots its very hard to be convinced AO is working at all. Maybe Capcom implemented Accidental Occlusion :p

Up to chapter 8, can confirm it definitely feels like there is very little to no AO during game play and the settings has (variable) written next to each AO option. But heaps of it in cut-scenes.

@CT how far along are you ? Playing as V is a breath of fresh air (and playing as him I seem to be getting a lot more S's and above compared to Nero).


Also, this game looks great during cut-scenes, but game play is decent to good at best. Out of the 2 RE engine games released this year, Resident Evil 2 is easily the more technically impressive one IMO.

Just started chapter 12. Totally agree about V. I really want to see a JRPG adopt these mechanics.

Did you unlock the deluxe edition content?

Out of the 2 RE engine games released this year, Resident Evil 2 is easily the more technically impressive one IMO.
To be fair, the performance profile is a little different for both games. Base PS4 does a better job of hitting the target 60fps in DMC5 than it does in RE2.

Also, DMC5 is doing a couple of things RE2 isn't. I see plenty environmental interactivity and destruction here compared to RE2, which is largely static from what I've played so far. Plus, inverse kinematics is used to apply physically correct contact between characters and level geometry.

Yeah .. the Mega Buster arm look *REAL* stupid but it's kinda OP for bosses. You can chip their health away from a safe distance :p

Also those real actors pre-viz videos are amaaaaaaaaaaaazing.

DMC is doing things expected of the franchise and/or slasher games like this (Bayonetta and early DMC games did a lot of small object destruction too) but generally the environments are very bland looking and outside of cut-scenes, the IQ isn't that great either. Yes, I understand different kind of games and focuses, but I found RE2 as being a lot more technically impressive for the kinds of environments etc it renders. It's a lot more consistent across the board too.

DMC has very high high's but also low low's. Character animation is definitely better than RE2 .. but I think it's simply because there's a lot more of it than in RE2.
