I said people in the US, EU, and Japan, not 'we' as in people residing in Pak. They don't lose their internet connections anywhere close to as frequently as people here do.

XBL's scheduled down times don't last longer than a couple of hours. Longer down times have rarely ever happened. So rare, in fact, that I can only recall one incident in the 7.5 years since the X360's launch where it was down for a couple of days.

Up until a year or so ago, Steam on the PC required you to be signed in at least at startup for verification before it could let you play your games. It's even easier for people with gaming laptops to move them around wherever they go, yet they still needed internet access in order to play their games. Very few people complained about the issue to begin with.

Keep in mind, I'm not trying to defend the always-online restriction. Just that I don't think it'll be as big an issue as people think it would be.

By we, I meant the people who live in developed countries. I don't live in Pakistan and thus, I used "we". And let me tell you that I have got a very nice internet connection which DOES die. Do we have power problems? Not really (but that also happens), but do we have internet connections issues and limited broadband or "reliable" connection availability? HELL YEAH!

I was not referring to XBL "scheduled" down times. I am talking about the longer than usual down times, not just XBLA but also the servers of game companies.

Yes, you are right. You can't defend the always-online connection restriction and that's because no one in their right minds would do that and you seem like a person who's in his right mind :) You are just not informed enough regarding the problems that we DO have here even in the big ol' United States of A.

Also, people in Pakistan better pray that these rumors don't come to fruition. I KNOW for a fact that they rely heavily on pirated and used games. An always-online console means the death of that console in Pakistan. Not that MS or Sony'd care about that but yeah, it'll be a big set back to Pakistani gamers.

I'm aware of ISP imposed bandwidth limitations in the US, but this isn't really an issue. XBL isn't going to drain your internet bandwidth with its verification checks, unless you plan on playing online or downloading content from the Live Marketplace.

Internet reliability isn't 100% guaranteed anywhere in the world, but is it really a frequently occurring issue for you? I may not be informed enough regarding such problems in the US, but I do know people who run Folding@Home on their PCs 24/7 and are very satisfied with their internet in general. And this may come as a shock to you, but the last unscheduled internet down time I experienced here in Pak was nearly 2 years ago (non-PTCL ISP).

Once again, I'm not indirectly implying that I'm welcoming this 'always-online' approach. However, it will most certainly not come in the way of my decision to buy the new Xbox. There are several factors for me to consider, but this will hold the least significance.

Besides, we don't really know in what capacity this 'always-online' functionality will even be implemented. Maybe the console only needs to perform a one-time verification check at startup or every time you boot a disc.

People who've owned games on Steam already know what it's like to need an internet connection at startup, and I've hardly seen anyone complaining on that front.

My guess is that the always-online policy will only be imposed on consoles sold via subscription (at a $99 or so starting price). That way, MS can easily disable a box if someone refuses to pay according to the subscription plan. Anyone who pays the full price upfront and gets the console will probably not have to go through with any restriction. But this is just speculation on my part.

y'all do realize they've been spoofing Live online status on jtag's for years right ? :p

they can very well spoof an always-online state.

That will require full hardware access like a JTAG. Won't happen within the first 2-3 years, at least. Also, it will depend on how they implement this online-only mechanism, if it is too complicated, forget about it. Xbox Live spoofing is not comparable to this at all.

No but I'm saying it might be easier to make the system think it's connected to the internet, instead of creating a fake Live from scratch.
There can be several possibilities on how online is implemented, but the way ONLINE component is implemented in games these days makes it virtually impossible to hack.

Biggest example is STEAM. You cannot hack into there software and play games on there platform and use there features. Yes there are some games which are run on private servers but require huge investment and time to manage and require recoding of the games themselves.

Online only is not an issue at all. People in the west dont care if it is online or not. Thier weakest connections have more bandwidth then they can use.

One recent example of online game is HALO 4. It has 2 online only components the multiplayer and the COOP. Even the Halsey story arc was completely exclusive to GOLD premium accounts and online only players. Does that stop it from selling? No and that is the sad reality most of the pirate console gamers have to live with.

Online only is the future.

Did y'all see the new Assassin's Creed trailer? They finally made a AC set in Japan & then they put a negro as the male protagonist. Ubisoft is taking cues from Disney, and it isn't gonna end well for them, just like Disney. Go woke, go broke!

if we are moving towards more and more popular trash across platforms that make billions for companies, I'm happy with all the barriers and exclusivity because at least that brings some pressure to create good stuff.
