You're a life saver Cerebral. One thing I always wanted to know though. Can a PAL PS3 user download and install this firmware update from a US website?

@Shyber: I'm not a 100% sure of this myself....it doesn't really make a difference though....people have been updating from different regions without problems....here's the official word though:

This update is for customers who own PS3™ systems sold in North America. DO NOT update your PS3™ system through this Web site if you purchased your system outside North America. There is no guarantee of proper operation with other models sold outside North America.

It's under the 'Notices' section of the System Update page....3rd statement

Since your console is PAL, it's better to be on the safe side and get your update from the EU Playstation website....here's the direct link:

http://duk01.ps3.update.playstation...60a6c36e2dd2000b3fda3205428665dc/PS3UPDAT.PUP

And here's the update page:

http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/system-software/detail/item114265/Update-features-(ver-2-42)/

What PAL region does your console belong to?....as in UK, UAE etc.

Is there a difference?
Not really, as long as you update from the EU Playstation website, you'll be fine....I was asking because I wanted to make sure it isn't the Singapore PAL version, for which the update should be downloaded from the Asian Playstation website

I don't know, how do I find out?
The easiest way of finding out is by checking the back of the ps3 box for any of the following:

- SCEA
- SCEE
- SCEH
- SCEJ

Since we already know that your console is PAL, it'll be either of SCEE or SCEH....you could also figure out your region by loading up the default ps3 browser page or the RSS feed

i think psn will surely work.

you can access the store and stuff.

but you need a faster connection to play games.

how much faster ?? like 1mb ?? or 2mb>?
there's two things that matter here:

1)- ping times:

that is the time a packet of data takes to leave the server and reach your ps3 (and vice versa). and all that depends on your distance from the server.

go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and check you ping times at lahore as well as new york and one other place in the middle. it'll give you a good indication of how good the connection is.

2)- upload speeds:

this is different from your download speeds. this is the speed at which your connection sends out data to the server. this matters when you yourself are hosting a game. for playing games in general, an upload speed of 128kbps is more than enough. but for hosting, most games require 256 kpbs and more.

so, to answer your question, a good 512 kpbs connection should be good enough. although a good 1mbps connection doesn't hurt!

you can read some articles about the best internet connection available in pakistan at the "broadband internet" section of pg.

ptcl and maxcom are highly rated; although maxcom is only in karachi and ptcl has a couple of problems of it's own.

i recently shifted from wateen wimax to ldn. it's a much better connection, although still not as flawless as i hoped it to be. still ldn in my humble opinion runs as good as ptcl.
