Guide to update your PS3 Firmware using the PC

*This guide is mostly for people who can't download their update from the PS3 in fear of loadshedding or console bricking etc etc..

Required items

• PlayStation®3 system
• A wireless controller
• A USB cable
• A PC with Internet access
• Storage media (Memory Stick™, SD Memory Card, CompactFlash®)* or a USB Mass Storage device such as a USB flash drive
  (At least 160 MB of free space required)
  * An appropriate USB adaptor (not included) is required to use storage media with some models.

1. Download the update from links given above.*
2. Create a folder on the storage media in which to save the update data.
3. Name the folder "PS3" on the storage media or USB.
4. Inside the "PS3" folder create another folder named "UPDATE"

5. After downloading the update save it in the "UPDATE" folder.​

NOTE:​

Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3™ system will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.

• Location: Save in the “UPDATE” folder which is inside the "PS3" folder.
• File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”.

Important Procedures:

• Do not turn off the PS3™ system or remove the storage media or USB device during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange.
• During an update, the power button on the system front and PS button of the controller are inactive.

1. Insert the storage media or USB device that contains the update data in the PS3™ system.
2. From the home menu, select
   
   (Settings) >
   
   (System Update).

3. Select [Update via Storage Media]​

4. Start the Update.​

5. Follow the On-Screen instructions to complete the update.​

6. Check if the update was sucessful, go to

(Settings) >

(System Settings) > [System Information]. If the [System Software] field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.​

I think this is a very nice thread daemonillidan .. hopefully more content would be added to this later on inshallah... .. although I do wanna give my $0.02 here :

Firstly, maybe you should add a question on the ways of registering for PSN. You can register for PSN through your PS3, but you can also register for PSN online, from your PC (I reserved my 'ahmadka' well before I actually bought the PS3 .. I also have reserved 'ahmadka' on XBL !). Although this can only be done for majority of the world regions, not all.

For example, if I want to register for a UK based PSN

Select the country, and then register for PSN for that region ...

Q) Do i have to Update my PS3 i order to access it?
A) Yes, you have to update the PS3 in order to do so. It amy seem like a waste of time it updates add loads of new features to your PS3(tm) System.
You can bypass the necessary updates by using THIS method, however it is recommended you update.

Not that I am supporting the tutorial or anything, but why would you recommend updating to the latest firmware ? Any specific reasons ?

I've upgraded to firmware 2.41 and it works like a charm on my system. It has everything as promised and in particularly in-game XMB and of course, TROPHIES I can say and recommend to all you guys that its safe to upgrade now, rest is your wish... But if you do then expect to see me on MGO

Just got this on my blackberry! Wonder what the new firmware is all about. I didnt even know there was another one coming so soon!!

They're saying that they've sped up stuff. Trophies load faster. But I can't find a direct link. If anyone finds it, please update post it here.

speaking of trophies, uncharted has been confirmed to get 40 trophies as well, apparently naughty dog were lying before when they said uncharted won't get trophies

does that mean it's one of those updates you can only get though the net?

that sucks! it always takes way too long.
