My current desktop specs are:

Processor: P4 3.0 GHz
Mobo: Intel D946GZIS (with some BIOS or CMOS issues, i think it has to do with the Coin cell battery)
PSU: Unbranded, Currently no details on Voltages!
Ram: 512 MB DDRII!

I have a 30k to 50k budget! looking to build a medium gaming rig, to play online games like MW2, etc!

Any help will be appreciated! :)

Oh and i have a Ci5 laptop, but iam shifting back to PC! So yeah, iam sort of used to the Ci5 performance! :p

CPU Core i5 2300 15900
Intel DH67BL motherboard: 9800
Kingston value RAM single stick of 4GB memory: 4,000
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB hard disk: 5300 (bargain for this you'll get it cheaper)
Generic case without PSU : Rs. 1500
PSU Antec vp450p : 3,300
DVD RW/R: 2000
Total ~ 41,800

With the balance 8,000 you can buy a GPU of your choice. If you want to free up more funds for the GPU you can always go for the dh61WW intel motherboard @ 6,700 instead. That should give you about Rs. 2,000 more to put towards a GPU. What you loose is USB 3, 2 memory slots and SATA 6gbps support. The latter won't make a difference with HDDs so its not a big loss. But the loss of 2 memory slots might make a big difference 3-4 years down the road.

Another option is to go with a dual core i3 CPU instead. The core i3 2100 costs around 12,000 so you save an additional 4,000 to put towards a GPU.

BTW a mobo coin cell battery can be had for Rs. 80-100 from any watch shop.

this is what i think would be the option for u. u can go with the i5 which devnull suggested but for that u wuld have to buy a cheaper GPU which won't really be helpful in gaming.

IMO, getting a better GPU rather than CPU should be his priority since as he said, he'll be using it mainly for gaming.

Edit: NVM, mrrul3z posted it first. BTW he can buy the Antec ea500 PSU which costs 3800 at galaxy and put the extra money into a larger hdd?

I would make 2 changes in the above:

- One get rid of the ripjaws for a kingston value ram module. You don't need OC ram in a non-oc system.

- Second I would go for an antec ea500 or bp500 instead of the xigmatec. The xigmatec is PFC while the antec is AFC. AFC is more efficient and better overall. Also the antec ea500 is 80% efficient while the xigmatek probably isn't.

I would also look into squeezing a 1TB drive in there. It'll deliver faster read speeds which is good thing. If you buy the antec ea500 you actually save enough to afford the larger drive. So final system:

Intel Core i3 2100>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>11200
intel dh61ww >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>6700
ram kingston 4gb >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>4000
hdd segate 1tb>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>5300

Sparkle GTX460 1024MB GDDR5>>>>16,500
DVD rw>>>>>>>>>>>.>>>>>>>>>>>2000

The only thing I am worried about is will a GTX460 fit in a generic chinese case?

Hey, thanks for the reply everyone!! :) One thing i should add, even though i dont plan on OC'ing, i still want to buy an aftermarket CPU cooler, because overheating is a Abuses will lead to ban that isnt letting go of my life! :/

One thing iam really interested in knowing is, is there a performance increase between the Q9400 and the 2100? because they almost cost the same (I think) and iam thinking about saving up on the cost of MOBO, by using my current one! i.e. get an LGA 775 processor!

And can you suggest a GPU that would run cool? Again, this issue relates directly to my past with a overheating geforce 6600! :p

There is no clear leader, so what do you guys suggest? stick with current mobo and get a Q9400, or spend on getting both mobo and processor?

brother lga775 is history now. if you have budget then upgrading the processor is not a good choice. moreover ddr3 motherboards, processors, and rams every thing is cheaper

The D946GZIS motherboard you have cannot support any 45nm chips or any quad core processors. It can only support 65nm core2duos. Most of these chips aren't made anymore so you'll have to buy them used and they will be much slower than the i3 2100. You can see a full list of compatible CPUs here:

The i5 650 is dual core and the i5 2400 is quad core. So no comparison. Just go with the i5 2300,2400 or 2500.

YAAR! As suggested by most, GO for newest technology, it will be faster and serve you longer period of time. 2300/2400 are more powerful than similar priced previous generation Core i5s and 775 socket dual cores.
