[h=1]Nintendo promises 'in-depth look' at first Switch games on Jan. 13[/h]
[h=2]Treehouse Live stream to follow Nintendo Switch press conference[/h]

Nintendo will air a special installment of Treehouse Live dedicated to Nintendo Switch games, the company announced. The livestream will kick off on Twitch and YouTube on Jan. 13 at 9:30 a.m. ET, just hours after Nintendo’s hotly anticipated Nintendo Switch press conference.
In a tweet, Nintendo of America promised that fans would be treated to “an in-depth look at upcoming games featured in the Nintendo Switch Presentation.” It’s unknown whether that’s limited to launch titles or other games that will hit the console later in the year.

— Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) January 5, 2017
We know a bit of what to expect from the Nintendo Switch live event, which airs at 11 p.m. ET on Jan. 12, straight from Tokyo. Nintendo has promised details on the console’s release date, price and launch titles. Following the conference is a hands-on event for press and, later that weekend, the public in New York City. The Switch will then hit the road throughout the winter.
The Switch is due sometime this March, and games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are expected to follow shortly thereafter, if not on launch day.

There have been several rumors and fake leaks surrounding the Switch’s launch library as of late, leading many to come up with their own Switch games in response. It’s one way that Nintendo fans are passing the time in the lead-up to the company’s official reveal of everything we want to know about the console.

[h=1]How to watch the Nintendo Switch event[/h]

[h=2]Don’t miss a thing from Thursday night’s big showcase[/h]

Nintendo took the wraps off its next console, the Nintendo Switch, back in October, but tomorrow, live from Japan, we will hear the most important information: When does it launch? What does it cost? What games will be available?
A new console is a major event in video gaming. Here is how you can be sure you've caught all of the news of the Nintendo Switch, as it happens late tomorrow night.
[h=4]When is it?[/h]The Nintendo Switch Event begins at 11 p.m. ET on Thursday, Jan. 12. The event is being livestreamed from Tokyo Big Sight, the largest convention center in Japan.
[h=4]Will it be in English?[/h]Yes, indications are that the presenters will be speaking in Japanese but the livestream will carry English voice-overs.

[h=4]Where can I view it?[/h]There are three sources:

Polygon will, of course, embed the stream here and on our Facebook page, and will break out coverage of the event throughout the evening.
[h=4]How long will it last?[/h]Nintendo hasn't said, but an hour is a good bet. Sony's PlayStation 4 announcement event in February 2013 clocked in at two hours. The news conference for the Xbox One the following May was one hour.
[h=4]What should I expect?[/h]We'll have a more detailed preview later, but the price and launch date, at minimum, will be set worldwide. Nintendo will also likely parade the games supporting the Switch at launch. It will be key to see how many of the 48 big-name developers and publishers Nintendo mentioned at the Oct. 20 Switch event will have wares shown, even in a B-roll of games. It's possible that big, U.S.-based publishers may make their own announcements through their own channels concurrent with the Switch event or afterward.

[h=4]What about pre-orders? Where should I be looking?[/h]Several major retailers started taking sign-ups for pre-order information after the Nintendo Switch was revealed on Oct. 20. If you signed up for any of them, watch your inbox.
Otherwise, these are the landing pages for the Nintendo Switch for several online retailers, some of which are still taking sign-ups for email notices. It might be a good idea to follow their Twitter accounts, too.

Pre-orders will probably go live right as the event ends; if you are dead set on getting this sight unseen, be prepared to act fast. Preorders for the Wii U maxed out quickly, leading to the usual ballooning prices on the gray market and the free hype that goes along with that.
[h=4]What's next?[/h]There will be a five-hour, private, hands-on event in New York on Friday, from which more details about the new console will emerge. Be sure to check in with Polygon throughout the day for news and video from this event.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch pre-orders open Friday morning at Nintendo NY store[/h]

[h=2]Better start lining up now[/h]

Customers can pre-order the Nintendo Switch at Nintendo NY this Friday, Jan. 13, according to the retailer’s Twitter account.
A limited quantity of pre-orders for the #NintendoSwitch will begin on 1/13 at 9AM while supplies last at #NintendoNYC.
— Nintendo NY (@NintendoNYC) January 11, 2017
Visitors can put money down for the highly anticipated console beginning at 9 a.m. ET, but they should plan to arrive much earlier than that. There will only be “a limited quantity” of Switch systems available to pre-order that day, the retailer said.
This is the first confirmed store to open up system pre-orders thus far. The news comes just before Nintendo’s Switch press conference, which streams live from Tokyo at 11 p.m. ET on Jan. 12. The company plans to reveal the release date, pricing, launch titles and other details about the Switch during the event.
New York City is a good place for Nintendo fans to be this weekend. Aside from the Nintendo NY pre-orders, there will be preview events for fans to check out the Switch for the first time starting Jan. 13. The Friday event is only for press, while an event on Jan. 14 is also invite-only. An event on Jan. 15 will be open to the public. The Switch will travel across the rest of the continent from January through March as well.

Check back tomorrow for Polygon’s live coverage of the Nintendo Switch event. Find out how to watch it in the meantime, as well as what news to expect from it.

In March, Nintendo Switch arrives with three years of unprecedented hype and incredibly lofty expectations behind it. During a presentation earlier today Nintendo detailed exactly what the console will be and outlined its plans for launch.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch has 32 GB storage, 720p touchscreen[/h]

[h=2]All the hardware specs we know[/h]

Nintendo detailed the hardware of the Nintendo Switch today, confirming long-held rumors such as the system’s touchscreen display during a press event in Tokyo.
The Switch’s main unit contains a 6.2-inch capacitive multitouch display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. That’s the same size as the Wii U GamePad’s screen, although the GamePad’s display had a resolution of 854 x 480.
When the system is being used in handheld or tabletop mode — i.e., outside of its dock — games will run at up to 720p, the lowest resolution that qualifies as high definition. When the unit is in its dock, the Switch ramps up its power and can render games at up to 1080p. The dock outputs that image to an external screen, such as a television, over HDMI. On the audio side, the Switch will output 5.1 surround sound over HDMI via the dock, and the unit features a headphone jack for stereo sound on the go.

It requires less processing power to generate a 720p image than a 1080p image, so the compromise makes sense in the portable use case, where it’s vital to eke as much battery life out of the Switch as possible. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will reportedly run at 720p in tablet mode and 900p when docked.

Nintendo said the system’s battery life will vary on a game-by-game basis, ranging from two and a half hours to six and a half hours. The battery will last for approximately three hours while playing Breath of the Wild, according to Nintendo. The company has not provided information on battery life for the Joy-Con controllers, although the Grip accessory will charge Joy-Con pads.
Like the Deluxe model of the Wii U, the Switch contains 32 GB of internal storage. It will be possible to expand the storage with microSDHC and microSDXC. The Switch unit itself charges via a USB-C port on the bottom; it is currently unclear if that port can be used for other purposes.
The Switch dock features at least two USB ports, which can be used to charge accessories like the Joy-Con controllers. Some accessories will function over USB, like Ethernet adapters for wired internet, although that would plug into the dock and not the Switch itself. Wireless internet will work over the 802.11ac standard, and the Switch will support up to eight systems over a local Wi-Fi connection.

The Nintendo Switch will be released worldwide on March 3 for $299. It will be sold in two configurations: one with gray Joy-Con controllers, and the other with neon red and blue Joy-Con devices.

[h=2]The hybrid console will go for $299[/h]

Nintendo Switch pre-orders are now live. Walmart is currently taking pre-orders, along with Best Buy. Pre-orders for certain games, like Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey, are also live on Amazon. You can also pre-order the console at GameStop and Target.
Prior to the conference, the company announced that limited pre-orders could be placed at Nintendo’s New York store beginning at 9 a.m. ET on Jan. 13. A representative from the store, which is located in Rockefeller Plaza, said they would be taking reservations for a limited quantity of systems.
The Switch was first revealed last October in a promotional video from the company, which showed off how the home console transitioned into a portable device. The first look video didn’t provide too many details, including the hardware’s specs or what the system’s launch titles would be. Nintendo first announced it was releasing a followup to the Wii U in March 2015, then codenamed the Nintendo NX.
The Switch can be played as either a standard, traditional console or on the go as a handheld device. Users can place the Switch on a dock to play it through a television, and when the console is removed for portable playing, the game will reportedly pick up right where the player left off. Like the 3DS, Nintendo’s line of portable consoles, the Switch will use cartridges called game cards. The company previously confirmed, however, that 3DS cartridges will not be compatible with the cartridge slot on the Switch. As a result, players won’t be able to play their 3DS games on the Switch.

Nintendo confirmed during its press conference that the Switch will go on sale on March 3. It will be priced at $299.
Polygon will update as more retailers start opening pre-orders.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch comes in two bundles, one with red and blue neon Joy-Con controllers[/h]

[h=2]The console will come with one dock[/h]

Nintendo confirmed today that its new console, the Switch, would include the dock, two Joy-Con controllers, the console and a few accessories when it launches this March.
According to the company, the $299 package will include a Console, left Joy-Con, right Joy-Con, two Joy-Con straps, one Joy-Con grip, one dock, and a HDMI cable and an AC adapter. Nintendo additionally stated that there would be two versions of the system at launch. The first includes the grey version of the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers that Nintendo revealed earlier in October. The other sports neon blue and neon red Joy-Con controllers, which can be seen above, but the console will remain a grey color.
Nintendo did not announce if the bundles would include a game at launch.
A better look at what comes inside the Nintendo Switch box can be seen in the image below, tweeted out by Nintendo of America.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch will have a paid online service starting this fall[/h]

[h=2]The service will be free until then, though[/h]

During the Nintendo Switch reveal event today, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima announced that the Switch will include a paid online service, breaking with Nintendo’s history of including online play for free. Kimishima also said that this paid service will be an improvement from the company’s previous offerings.
“With Nintendo Switch, you will of course be able to enjoy online multiplayer gaming,” Kimishima said. “And when you use a smart device application that will connect to Nintendo Switch, you will be able to invite friends to play online, set play appointments and chat with friends while enjoying online matches in compatible games, all from your smart device.
“Users will be able to try out Nintendo Switch online services for free during a trial period after launch. Then it will become a paid service beginning in the fall of 2017. We will provide additional details on this paid service and its features on our home page at a later date.”
That later date ended up being today, as the website populated shortly after the presentation with some details on the online services.

The paid features include an online lobby, voice chat, a monthly game download and exclusive deals. This, of course, is similar to Microsoft’s long-standing paid Xbox Live strategy. Sony launched PlayStation Plus on the PlayStation 3, but it was not required for online play until the PlayStation 4. Both services cost $60 a year, and both offer voice chat, free games and exclusive deals.

Users who don’t opt into the paid tier will still have access to the eShop, the friends service, screenshot sharing and the parental controls app.

[h=3]Online from the start[/h]It’s been 667 days since Nintendo revealed plans to succeed the flagging Wii U with a new console, the Nintendo Switch (then-codenamed NX). That initial reveal statement promised a new “membership service” thanks to a partnership with Japanese mobile gaming giant DeNA.

Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service.
It’s notable that the very first acknowledgement of the Switch was also an acknowledgement of the importance of a consistent online identity for Nintendo’s products and an acknowledgement that Nintendo itself could not do this by itself.

That service — the successor to the Nintendo Network ID — ended up being called, simply, Nintendo Account, and it was launched in North America in February of last year, in advance of the release of Miitomo and the new My Nintendo rewards program. While both the 3DS and Wii U have been updated to support the new Nintendo Account system, the Switch is the first new piece of hardware built with Nintendo Account in mind.

Meager Launch games & Unattractive price. Nintendo had to do much more than this in order to let people jump back to their eco system and from what i have seen so far I'm not impressed. For me, its too much of a price to pay for only 1 game (Zelda) at the moment.

I wish someone would make it illegal for Nintendo to keep Mario and Zelda exclusive to their hardware. :laugh1:

This. I hope that Wii U emulator comes to fruition sooner rather than later so there is no need for either a Wii U or Switch.

Launch line up is very weak... Xenoblade and mario odyssey looked good... other than that games were not that impressive... Why does switch has only 32gb on board storage and priced $299 which is way too much.. I was expecting $199.. I should have known it is nintendo who sells nes roms for $5 and snes roms for $8.
