Salam to everyone. I'm still in XI as of now but was thinking about this problem.
Is NUST really better than NED? If so then how? In what way is it better? Are the teachers better? The equipment?
And is a degree from NUST valued more than a one from NED?

Bachelors of Engineering in Software Engineering

PS: After viewing the above link I'm realizing that I might ave to go the Islamabad. I'm in Karachi as of now. So yeah, thats an issue as well. :/

NUST is definitely better in software engineering or CS compared to NED.

IMO NED's teachers are fine. It is actually the mindset related to software degree from NED as compared to FAST, NUST, IBA or KU thats the problem. People look at those universities first and then at an NEDian when hiring (that's what I've heard from my bro who is a CS graduate and working in the industry).

I have heard quite the opposite, Students from NED are usually handpicked before every other engineering university. They're way more preferred ( For whatever reason ). Although that is for engineering, I don't really know if it is the same case for computer sciences or not.

Karachi.
It's for hardware Engineering that is, Electrical, mechanical, civil and electronics. For software, NED graduates are mostly chosen after fast and nust graduates.

For Software Engineering FAST should be preferred, while dont know about NUST and NED has its market value while after all that SSUET is also considered.

Oh completely forgot about FAST.
So basically, NUST is gonna be hard for me to go to. Since it would require living is Islamabad for basically 4 straight years. NED and FAST seem like a better option.

Now can anyone compare the two? Is FAST significantly better than NED, for Software Engineering.

FAST doesn't offer a software engg course although they do offer a computer science one. A lot of people mix both the courses but they do have differences.

First decide on a field. First you were talking about software engg which is a programme for hardcore programming concepts which FAST doesn't offer. Now you're talking about computer engg which is a programme relating to a majority of courses to computer hardware and few minor software courses. FAST doesn't offer that either. Finally FAST offers a computer science course which is one of the best in the country. Yes it's true that students from FAST are given a slight preference over students of other universities.

I meant software engineering. Corrected that.
I want the course where I learn how to program. Coding and object oriented stuff. If FAST doesn't offer that than NED's my best bet?

A recent graduate of NED. Listen dude. Universities do matter a bit, but its not like if you didn't get admission in your desired university you're doomed especially in a field like yours. They mostly give you the opportunity to brag among people that you're studying in one of the top tier institutions. So choose any between these in which you feel convenient. Well of course there are a few things you should look for in a university which include their faculty, location, infrastructure, extracurricular activities and most importantly and strong Alumni. The field you're interested in demands skills. A friend of mine got passed out as a software engineer from NED. From his first year in the university he has been involved in achieving different certifications. When he was in his third year he had so much certifications and skills that the firm in which he was doing internship said to him that if he had a degree with him right now they would offer him the job instead right away. By the time we were giving our final year exams he was getting calls from tons of software houses for job interviews and currently he's working in one of the best software houses in karachi and he's still getting calls where ever he applies. He got a CGPA of around 3.5 and a guy in his class got 3.9 something and he is jobless because he acquired little to no skills. There is a certification in the field of networking called CCIE if you know. Only a dime of people are able to get that. A friend of my brother who was a graduate from hamdard in BCS(Average university) got it and today he's getting calls for job and immigration from all over the world where ever he's applying to. So are the students from NED/NUST/FAST better than him? Absolutely not. The point I'm trying to make here is to me, A question like which university is best among these sounds very vague. So don't think if you got in NUST or NED or FAST or any other great university you're set and you'll get all the jobs easily once you pass out. There's still a lot more to do.
Secondly, students mostly don't open books here in our country. They just do what they are taught in class and only open books for practice/exercise/example problems. A book is a teacher itself. So complaining like the faculty isn't good and all is also stupid. Sure a teacher should be good enough to guide you in your subjects and your future endeavors but students these days expect everything from teachers(spoon feeding) and like the ones who make final exams from lectures.
So choose the university as per your convenience and what you value. And yes, a good university helps you in performing these tasks easily.

Epic reply bro. Thanks. I'm now really preferring NED. Anyway, I know that Software Engineering is gonna be much more than just reading books and passing exams, especially when I start looking for employment.

These certifications you're talking about, are they obtainable from NED? Or do I have to go to some other institution?
After Googling CCIE, it seems that its a purely network related certificate. Not something I was expecting a software engineer to do?

FAST doesn't offer a software engineering programme but it does offer a computer science one. There is a slight difference between the two. Computer science also mainly in programming techniques but it also has some hardware and logic building courses whereas software engineering only has hardcore programming courses. A lot of people go for computer science in the bachelors because it provides a wide array of courses and the students can familiarise himself with them. Then when the student knows what he wants to do and wants to pursue a masters degree he switches to something specific like software engineering.

As someone said above that the university has a limited role in getting you a job and he is absolutely correct. I have friends pursuing a computer science degree in NED and I am currently studying in FAST and there is a difference between the learning environment in both the universities. I personally think that students from FAST are encouraged to go out and learn on their own. FAST also has one of the strongest alumnis in the country in computer science. Also there is another university called DHA suffa which is fairly good in computer science.

Yar, I'm not related to these fields. I'm a Mechanical engineer. I get to know little bit about these things from my friends and brother who are involved in it.
I'm sure there are people on pg who can guide you better about your further queries. One thing you should know though that it's NED first batch of software engg which just passed out last year. So Alumni of NED in software are all fresh as of now. By the time, you'll pass out you'll have a strong alumni network then.

Iqra is not THE best university though, but its good enough. Stop worrying about it if you got into Iqra. As I said, university is not everything that matters.

I was enrolled in NUST back then, but I preferred NED. NUST is a little more elite but in NED you will also become more street smart. Big university, More students , more to learn, more grooming.
As far as Software Engineering is concerned, your person skills will matter more in long run. Yes, university name matters, especially for your 1st job when you have no experience except fake internship certificate and FYP made by or copied from someone else (in most cases :p)
As for the public perception of NUST vs NED is not that big , for the job your luck will matter. Luck as in , who is the interviewer (from NED or otherwise).
NED produce more graduates in city/year than NUST, and its producing since long. So bigger NED community/lobby you ll find at most places and on top tier of hierarchy.
