DOWNLOADABLE CHARACTERS
Marvel vs Capcom 3 is a primarily 4 button fighting game. The 4 buttons are A, B, C, and E (Exchange). Along with the 4 primary buttons, there are two buttons for calling assists - A1 and A2. Check the Media section for a convenient tutorial on how to chain combos.
Pressing the E button in the air does an "air exchange" which is one of the ways in which you can swap characters. Pressing E along with any direction will do an attack and switch your character with the next character in the team, which can continue your air combo. However, if the opponent out-guesses you and presses the same combination of E and the direction button, he will intercept your attack and will get a chance to do an air combo on you instead.
DHC (DELAYED HYPER COMBO): One of the oldest, most important game mechanics in the Marvel series. DHC is when you cancel one character's Hyper combo with another character's Hyper combo. For eg: In a team of Ryu/Iron Man/Dante, you cancel Ryu's Shinkuu Hadoken into Iron Man's Proton Cannon. Two conditions should be satisfied for this - you should have the sufficient number of super bars required. For the Shinkuu Hadoken -> Proton Cannon, you need 2 Super meters, but for Shinkuu Hadoken -> Proton Cannon -> Dante's Level 3 you need 5 Super meters. The second condition is that you must enter the inputs of the second hyper when the first hyper is active. However, not all hypers are DHC-able.
The DHC is a very powerful and versatile tool. You can use DHCs to add extra damage to your combos, to make unsafe hypers safe (For eg: Spiderman's crawler assault cancelled to Morrigan's Dark Force), to bait your opponent into attacking, or just to safely switch out a character that is about to die.
THC (TEAM HYPER COMBO): The Team Hyper Combo is executed by pressing both Assists buttons at the same time. A THC is when 2 or all 3 of your team's characters come on screen and execute their hypers simultaneously. You need 2 Super bars for two characters and 3 meters to do a full THC. THCs have limited usability. Usually, two DHCs do more damage than a single THC, and not all teams make effective THCs. However, if you have three characters with beam hypers, you can use a THC to cause great chip damage if the clock is about to run out.
X FACTOR CANCEL (XFC/KFC): The X Factor, abbreviated to KFC by fans, is probably the most radical, game-changing feature in Marvel vs Capcom 3. In fact, it is so important that I can write a whole essay on it. X Factor can best be described as a mix of Tekken's rage system and Street Fighter 4's FADC.
At any time during the match, pressing all 4 attack buttons makes your character go into X Factor mode. Entering KFC while performing a move or a super cancels all the remaining frames of that move (like FADC). Once your character is in KFC, their speed and damage increases substantially (like Tekken's Rage). The lesser the number of remaining characters in your team, the more potent and longer the KFC is. Entering KFC with one character remaining gives a substantial boost to your remaining character's attacking power, and lasts the longest. You can only enter X factor mode once in a match. One you use it up, its over.
Knowing when to enter KFC effectively will separate a good player from a great player. Since KFC cancels all your recovery frames, you can use it to combo a hyper move into the same hyper move. You can use it with all three characters alive to kill your opponent's character, and even though the attack boost and duration is the minimum, the boost gets spilled over to all your characters, including their DHCs and assists. However, you can use it with one character remaining, and boost your hypers so much that they can kill an opponent in one combo. You can also use it during blockstun to cancel into an invincible hyper to punish your opponents.
