HL: Alyx may well be the most immersive VR game. That doesn't take anything away from what Astro bot has accomplished. Different genres, ya know lol

Glad I picked this up during the recent Steam sale. Works great with the games I've tested. Looks like PSVR owners will be playing Half-Life: Alyx after all :hah:

Watching PSVR adopters hunting for sales on drivers to play Alyx is so cathartic (but also pitiful), because we all know that Alyx is....

Yup, works with Steam VR via those drivers I linked above. You do, however, need motion controllers for games that don't support standard controllers.

Yes yes. All you need is an irresistible Steam account, 'non-gaming purpose PC' that barely meets the minimum requirements for Alyx, pay for drivers and most importantly, a miracle that can replicate the Valve Index features on a PSVR :lol:

The assumption that a PC primarily for non-gaming purposes must mean that it barely meets the minimum requirements for HL: Alyx :hah:

And look at this 'miracle' where 7 other VR headsets are able to play the game just fine lol. Yes, the best way to play it is with the Index, but Valve isn't just making it to work with its own headset.

Not to mention, if the Index-specific features are super important to someone, the controllers are also sold separately.

Also, @manigamer the Switch Joycons work fine as substitute motion controllers. So if you've got a PSVR + Switch already, you only need to get the iVRy drivers (Joycon VR drivers are free) and you're set.

And before Necrokiller points out once again that this isn't the ideal way to play HL: Alyx, yes we know. But it beats having to buy an expensive piece of hardware.

Valve’s classic narrative shooter series Half-Life is now free on Steam, and will stay free for the next two months.
With the launch of virtual reality shooter Half-Life: Alyx set for March, Valve is opening up the 2004 digital remaster of 1998’s Half-Life for free, as well as DLC missions Opposing Force and Blue Shift. Half-Life 2 is also part of the package, as well as follow-ups Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two. The value of the separate items on offer is around $56.
A Valve statement on the deal said that the promotion is designed to pave the way for Half-Life: Alyx which is set before the events of Half-Life 2 and its subsequent episodes. “The games share characters and story elements,” Valve said. “The Half-Life: Alyx team believes that the best way to enjoy the new game is to play through the old ones, especially Half-Life 2 and the episodes, so we want to make that as easy as possible.”
The Half-Life games center on scientist Gordon Freeman who must escape locations where mutants and aliens roam, making use of weapons and solving puzzles. The first game’s expansions feature other protagonists — Black Mesa security guard Barney Calhoun and military specialist Adrian Shephard — and were developed by Gearbox Software. In Half-Life: Alyx VR players will take on the role of Freeman’s ally Alyx Vance, as she once again does battle with enemies, making use of a gravity gun. The Half-Life games are available for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux.

Valve: Half-Life: Alyx Is ‘Done’, Confident Game Won’t Be Delayed | UploadVR

If the recent wave of major videogame releases has you worried that Half-Life: Alyx might be delayed worry not; Valve is “confident” that won’t happen.The developer noted as much in today’s Ask Me Anything session on Reddit. “With the exception of some tweaks to the absolute final scene, the game is done,” the team wrote under the studio’s account. “Lots of us at Valve, as well as playtesters, have played through the entire game multiple times.”


So far Half-Life: Alyx is scheduled for release at some point in March. We don’t know exactly what day of the month it might drop, though it is already up for pre-order on Steam. “Right now we’re primarily polishing and fixing bugs, which is where we’d hope to be at this point in the development cycle,” Valve continued. “We’re confident we’ll hit our intended release. (We let the Valve Time happen before we announced the game.”

Yup, except for zen levels. It's pretty good actually, they also overhauled the terrible "On a rail" chapter making it much more enjoyable. It's 95% done at this point (xen chapters are available in the beta branch) but I'm waiting for the full release. Hit me up if you need steam family share.
