Rockstar Recommends You Don't Install Both GTA V X360 Discs, Find Out Why
Grand Theft Auto V on the Xbox 360 will come on two discs, one for installation and the other to play/load the game. While the X360 has enjoyed optional disc installs for any game since its dashboard update in 2008, Rockstar is recommending Xbox 360 players that they do not install the "play" disc.
Advice provided in a
tweet reply by @RockStarSupport states, "For optimal performance, we recommend not installing that disc. We will have more info on our Support Site at launch."
This seems to suggest that the game is designed to be loaded from a disc rather than the HDD, much like
GTA IV on X360. Though for the past title, X360 disc installs wasn't a thing until months after its release. Disc installs generally give shorter load times among other benefits, but it appears that
GTA V may actually give the opposite effect if the play disc is installed on the hard drive.
Digital Foundry did a little digging with their own copy of the game and offers their own technical explanation, along with video, to show you why installing the play disc is a bad idea.
So what's the story here? Well, optimal streaming is achieved by making us of all the available bandwidth in the system. Why stream just from the hard drive when you can run in data simultaneously from both the disc and the HDD? Based on what we're seeing on the Xbox 360 version, perhaps running both DVD and HDD assets from just the one source slows down access times, impacting streaming performance. It's not game-breaking stuff, but it does take you out of the moment when it does manifest and for that reason we can't recommend installing the play disc.
In July, Rockstar confirmed that
GTA V will require installation for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. On Xbox 360, players will have a one-time mandatory install with the install disc, requiring at least 8 GB of free space. The PS3 version will also need 8 GB but unlike the X360, it will come on one Blu-ray disc as well as a digital version on PSN. There's no word whether the digital version will have any adverse performance.
