The spin off wouldn't be quite so obvious, however.



Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates would support spinning off the Xbox division if newly appointed CEO Satya Nadella decided it.


Gates made some comments regarding a spin off in an interview on Fox Business Network. Though he would support an Xbox spin off, taking the division separately from Microsoft isn't "obvious" according to Gates.


"We're taking PC gaming, Windows gaming, and Xbox gaming, and bringing those a lot closer together," Gates said. "The power of the PC graphics chips means you can do great games there. I'm sure Satya and the team will look at that. And it's up to them. But we're going to have an overall gaming strategy, so it's not as obvious as you might think."




When pressed further if he would support CEO Nadella on spinning off the Xbox division, Gates responded "absolutely."



Phil Spencer, now head of Xbox, made statements in early March that Nadella is "extremely committed to Xbox" based on explicit conversations.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Microsoft corporate vice president of communications, Frank Shaw, issued a statement to GameSpot about Gates' comments.

"Mr. Gates' comments today were reflective of his support of Satya as CEO. As Mr. Gates noted, Microsoft is committed to gaming across multiple platforms with Xbox as the centerpiece of our gaming strategy. We remain committed to Xbox and the millions of Xbox fans around the world."

    You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
