You're right, the old Bioware could never make a game that looks and plays this good as well. A shame then, that they had to build a game designed by the suits at EA using an engine that wasn't fit for it.

As one developer told me, there’s a belief that if Anthem doesn’t live up to EA’s expectations, BioWare will look very different in the future, especially after the disappointment of Mass Effect Andromeda led to EA absorbing BioWare Montreal into the studio EA Motive.

Mass Effect 2 and 3 were pretty good looking games for their time.
ME2 was good but how did it stack up against Red Dead, Heavy Rain, Metro 2033, God of War 3 and Halo Reach?
ME3 was already outdated at launch considering the quality of titles we got a year before it (Crysis 2, Witcher 2, Battlefield 3 etc).

Anthem is definitely much more ambitious (and successful) in pushing the visuals and mechanically solid gameplay (probably the closest thing to a licensed Iron Man game). Sadly we might not get anything better out of them now.

You just ruined my day man. Even though I had little interest in Anthem I'm literally heartbroken thinking about the prospect of Bioware after this.
To be totally frank, the last really great Bioware game was Mass Effect 2 and that was like a decade ago. Whats really disappointing is that Anthem could've been their next great RPG and it almost feels like they had a great foundation and some suit came to their studios and asked them to shoehorn a Destiny/Diablo clone in there.

My grief is even greater since I really enjoyed Andromeda.. I know mine is a minority opinion but i still think the hate that game got was way more than it actually deserved. You are point on that this looks like someone from the corporate division just ordered them to make a destiny clone from a game that could well have been the next ME for them and that makes it even more disappointing.

Im part of this minority. I consider ME3 to be the real blunder in the franchise that basically soured me on the whole franchise. A patch to fix the colored endings? Doesn't get more disastrous than that. As a fresh start, Andromeda got a lot of things right.

Fuck EA and their decision to force Frostbite down all its developer's throats. If anyone needs to get fired, its that game engine for open world RPGs.

What is this I don't even .....

yes ME3 had a botched ending at start .. but everything in the journey UP to the ending was still incredible and classic Bioware.

If you go back and replay ME3 now with all the DLC and the extended cut ending, it is an incredibly worthy successor to the previous 2 games. Especially if you consider the Citadel DLC ending as the canon ending for the franchise or how you last see your characters.

Blame EA for cutting off so many important chunks from the core ME3 like the Leviathan content. I won't be surprised if Bioware was mostly tied down in those decisions. But once it was all said and done, and once you experience the "full" ME3 package, that is an incredible send off to the franchise.

Andromeda on the other hand .. even after 1.10 (the last patch), the game is still a buggy mess. The characters are uninteresting, the writing is a huge step down from the previous games etc.

Andromeda wasn't even that buggy for me at launch, let alone post launch. Ymmv but it was nowhere near AC unity level of a mess. Atleast it had vastly superior combat. ME3 was a copy pasta job in more ways than one.

Never forget, Marauder Shields tried to warn us.

Marauder Shields died for our sins. Though his sacrifice was mostly nulled and voided with the extended cut endings.

I will never forget this:

The funny thing is .. I booted up Andromeda on PC a couple of weeks back and with the latest official *and* unofficial patches, there are still bugs in the first hour. Peebee *STILL* holds her gun backwards in the cut-scene when you first meet her even now. Also that male Ryder voice actor saying "we got this" about 10 times in the first half hour is really grating and a sharp punch in the face to the classic Bioware writing.

Call it rushed or whatever, Mass Effect 3 still had a thousand times more charming scenes and character moments than Andromeda. This is just one example near the end of the game:

And another amazing example of a great character moment.

You're comparing the charm of a 3rd entry in a franchise with a reboot. SMH

ME3 was overrated. Patches, DLCs released as damage control to fix ending pretty much sums up their writing chops.

I thought the game was rushed and whatnot :p

Doesn't matter if it's the first or third entry in the franchise. By that logic Andromeda came out after the trilogy and the developers should have used all their common sensibilities to deliver a product which should have far outshown the original trilogy ... yet it was a backward ass game in almost every regards besides graphical fidelity. Hell, even portions of the graphical fidelity (eg character animations) were somehow worse than a half decade old Unreal 3 game.

Still a huge improvement over what came afterward with Andromeda and what Bioware has become now with Anthem.

The old Bioware is dead.

RIP the Bioware which made Dragon Age: Origins and the original ME: Trilogy.

As a worthy successor to ME2, this is all it could muster up in year end awards:

The Winners of this year *

The Walking Dead: The Game - 75
Journey - 57
Far Cry 3 - 51
Dishonored - 49
Mass Effect 3 - 32

Outshined by point and click choice and consequence adventure and a walking simulator. Not much left to say here. ME2 was their last good effort.

You just proved my point, even in it's 'rushed' state, it won 30+ game of the year awards ... now if you're going to say any game winning 30 + GoTy awards is an under achievement, I don't know what to say :p

Also, like I acknowledged above as well, yes ME3 at launch, especially the ending, soured people. But it is a perfect example of a game which has aged like fine wine in hindsight if you play it with all the post-launch content that came out. It does not excuse the game's state at launch, but at least Bioware redeemed themselves eventually.

Same cannot be said for anything that came out of Andromeda post-launch unfortunately.

I'll judge the numbers based on context and not in a vacuum. From a frontrunner GOTY in ME2 to be lagging behind INDIES is nothing to brag about. Even Fallout 4 in hindsight mustered up way more awards than ME3 in a FAR more competitive year. Safe to say ME3 was a disappointment for a vast majority when the dust settled.

Fallout 4 released in a year with a comparatively less competitive environment for GoTY awards.Witcher 3 was the big one which one most awards, the rest were mostly straggelers.

Are you going to tell me Bloodborne was a disappointing game too ?

Also, I repeat, calling a game winning 30+ GoTY awards a disappointment is just showing how skewed and one-sided your judging criteria is lol.

That's like saying just because Spider Man won 16 GoTY awards only makes it a disappointing game. Like, no one would say that besides yourself maybe lol.

Let's look at your other favorite numbers source:

The ending aside, even in the original vanilla ME3, the entire journey up to said ending was full of classic A+ Bioware content.

You cannot say tell me with a straight face that Andromeda was a better game than 3.

I consider Bloodborne, Arkham Knight, Witcher 3 and MGS V (and lets throw Undertale for good measure) significantly stiffer competition than Journey, TWD, Far Cry 3 and Dishonored. If Bioware couldn't rise above these, then yeah, that's a disappointment.

Also, I repeat, calling a game winning 30+ GoTY awards a disappointment is just showing how skewed and one-sided your judging criteria is lol.
Disappointment implies expectations. Even Dishonored exceeded those and ME3 fell short. It says something that you consider that a worthy successor lol

When the gap between itself and the next best game is basically 100+ awards, and the games below it indies, only the most staunch supporters would consider that a notable achievement lol (and not the very definition of a straggler)

Let's look at your other favorite numbers source:

I was massively disappointed by ME3. And I feel Andromeda got more hate than it deserved. Both are largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. That 93 wasn't even enough to become a unanimous GoTY amidst indie games. Wonder why lol
