[h=1]Grand Theft Auto 4 now backward compatible on Xbox One[/h]

[h=2]Head on back to Liberty City[/h]

Grand Theft Auto 4 is the latest classic Xbox 360 to become backward compatible with Xbox One. Originally released in 2008, the universally acclaimed open-world action game is now playable on modern hardware.
Both Grand Theft Auto 4 and Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, which contains its two expansion packs, are now playable on Xbox One. That includes all versions of the main game, including the Complete Edition. Owners of the original Xbox 360 discs can use those, or they can purchase digital copies from the Xbox Live Marketplace.
Grand Theft Auto 4 joins Grand Theft Auto 5 as one of the mainline entries in the long-running series available on Xbox One. Both are among the most widely beloved titles in the series, with GTA5 in particular continuing to perform well at retail.
In a recent earnings call, Take Two Interactive — the parent company of Rockstar Games, which develops the Grand Theft Auto series — announced that it had shipped more than 75 million copies of Grand Theft Auto 5. That puts it high among the list of gaming’s all-time biggest sellers.

GTA4 was also a huge seller even amid controversy due to its violent content and use of alcohol. The base game alone has sold more than 25 million copies.
Another popular Rockstar game, Red Dead Redemption, is also backward compatible Xbox One. We’ve got the full list of 360 games that work on Xbox One for more.

[h=1]Original Xbox backward compatibility announced for Xbox One[/h]

[h=2]Coming sometime later this year[/h]

Original Xbox games are coming to the latest console. Microsoft announced backward compatibility for games from its first console coming sometime later this year.

“Our team of engineers are working hard to bring some of your original favorite Xbox games to Xbox One today,” Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft’s Xbox division, announced at the company’s E3 2017 keynote.
“OG games will look better and play better across the Xbox One family,” Spencer promised, name-checking a personal favorite in the process, Crimson Skies.
Spencer had hinted as far back as 2015 that backward compatibility for the first Xbox could be a possibility. Xbox One introduced backward compatibility with Xbox 360 games in November 2015, though the games must be readied for backward compatibility before they are added to the library.

On Saturday, Spencer said that library had grown to 385 in the past two years. All Xbox 360 games offered in the Games with Gold promotion are now compatible on Xbox One.

[h=1]Four Halo games now playable on Xbox One via backward compatibility[/h]

[h=2]Return to the classics[/h]

Microsoft just made a major addition to the Xbox One’s backward compatibility library:Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4 are now supported in the program, the company announced today.
Halo studio 343 Industries said in early July that support for these games was on the way. All four titles are already playable on Xbox One — Halo Anniversary, Halo 3 and Halo 4were included in 2014’s Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and 343 released an upgraded version of Halo 3: ODST’s campaign on Xbox One in May 2015. (It was available free for some Master Chief Collection players as a make-good for the compilation’s botched launch.) The other Halo game that Bungie made, 2010’s Halo: Reach, has been backward compatible since December 2015.
In case you’re wondering why Halo 2: Anniversary is the odd man out in this group of backward-compatible games, here’s the thing: It was never released as a stand-alone game on Xbox 360. Halo 2 debuted in 2004 on the original Xbox, and its high-definition remaster is available only in The Master Chief Collection.
However, Halo 2 may become playable on Xbox One after Microsoft adds support for original Xbox games to the backward compatibility initiative. That feature is coming later this year, and it will work with disc copies of those titles

[h=1]It’s almost time for Original Xbox backward compatibility ...[/h]

[h=2]These might be the games returning on Xbox One[/h]

Some of the names that you may see when the Xbox One flips the switch on backward compatibility to the original Xbox include Dead to Rights, King of Fighters: Neowave andStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
That’s according to users seeing listings for the games in the marketplace on their Xbox One and in Xbox One communities. Leaks of Xbox 360 backward compatible titles were seen in the same places in 2015 as the Xbox One approached that feature’s debut. And yes,Crimson Skies — the often-namechecked favorite of Xbox boss Phil Spencer — is in one of the images.
Spencer announced at E3 2017 that backward compatibility to the original Xbox would be coming to the console soon. The Xbox One X launches in November, and when Xbox One was made backward compatible to select Xbox 360 games beginning in 2015, that alsohappened in November of that year. It’s console video gaming’s biggest month, after all.

The image posted tweeted above also lists crowd pleases like Ninja Gaiden Black,Psychonauts, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Bloodrayne and Sid Meier’s Pirates!Pirates! originally launched on Xbox in 2004 and was one of the first games compatible with the Xbox 360 when it launched a year later. That was a messy process for disc games, however, and it later reappeared in the Xbox 360’s marketplace
Reddit user Krvavi_Abadas notes that the pages on which these games appear are unfinished and their interaction with the rest of the Xbox One ecosystem either goes nowhere or delivers a glitch.
In any event, like the Xbox 360 back-compat rollout, we’re not seeing wishlist-type rumors here — no Morrowind, for example. KOTOR makes sense as BioWare is now owned by EA and, well, it’s gonna be nonstop Star Wars from November to the end of the year. Of course, KOTOR has long been playable on PC.

[h=1]Original Xbox compatibility, and 13 games, arriving on Xbox One tomorrow[/h]

[h=2]Finally, Grabbed by the Ghoulies on Xbox One[/h]

Perhaps with the exception of the Xbox One X, Microsoft’s biggest E3 2017 announcement was the addition of original Xbox backward compatibility. The Xbox One X is still two weeks from release, but the Xbox marketplace has already begun to receive original Xbox games, priced at $9.99 each (though your original discs should also work, if you still have them). And today, IGN reports that the functionality — along with 13 original Xbox games — will be available tomorrow.

Here’s the full list of original Xbox games coming to the store tomorrow:

  • Black
  • BloodRayne 2
  • Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
  • Dead to Rights
  • Ninja Gaiden Black
  • Fuzion Frenzy
  • Grabbed by the Ghoulies
  • The King of Fighters Neowave
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
  • Psychonauts
  • Red Faction 2
  • Sid Meier’s Pirates!
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Some of these are available to purchase in the Xbox marketplace right now, if you’re so inclined.
As for what’s next? It won’t be a dump of every original Xbox game previously made compatible with the Xbox 360.
“A curated list of key games was the way to go with this,” Xbox’s Bill Stillwell told IGN. The predictable combination of missing contracts and music licensing, exacerbated by defunct publishers, is to blame, according to Stillwell.
Add in one of these soon-to-be-released Duke controllers and an embarrassing early-aughts soundtrack, and you’ve got some of your childhood back.

Two incredible cult classics come to Xbox backwards compatibilityThis is a very good dayMicrosoft continues to add new titles to the backwards compatibility function of the Xbox One, and it’s one of the best things about the ecosystem. The company announced that a few new games were being added to the service, including Far Cry 2 and Driver: San Francisco.I will add the small detail that these are two of the best games literally in the history of our hobby. That’s not hyperbole, as Driver: San Francisco combines solid driving with a concept that’s wickedly strange. This is the only game I can think of that takes place both in a car and in a coma. It’s a game that lets you jump between cars due to a ridiculous conceit where all this happens inside the game’s logic. It’s a bonkers way to create a racing game, but San Francisco leans into it so hard that it’s hard not to love it. This is the best Driver game in the series, and if you missed out the first time you should consider this your second chance.Far Cry 2 is also considered one of the best shooters ever created by many critics and developers, and is a distinct entry in the Far Cry series. It’s not exactly a welcoming game, but it’s worth the effort to dive in. Arkane Studios’ Harvey Smith once wrote an op-ed about why the game is so good, and I’ll quote a paragraph here, but I urge you to read the whole thing.“The reward for those who stayed with the game was potent,” Smith explained. “Some of the most interesting game design commentary of the year orbited the game, including the Permadeath experiments conducted by Ben Abraham and others, which I take as an indication of how thought-provoking and challenging (to video game conventions) Far Cry 2 was. The game stands as the shooter title that has given me the most compelling, player-driven moments to date.”Grab these games, and play them. You’ll be richly rewarded for your time, and you’ll get to see some of the strangest, most rewarding mechanics in the past few decades.

[h=1]Crackdown and more Xbox 360 games enhanced for Xbox One X[/h]

[h=2]New graphics setting added, too[/h]

Xbox One X owners looking for some fun Xbox 360 throwbacks now have some new options for enhanced games, including Crackdown, Microsoft announced today.
The company has expanded the list of Xbox 360 games with Xbox One X enhancements by four, adding Crackdown, the 2007 open-world action game from Realtime Worlds; Fable Anniversary, the 2014 remaster of the original Fable; Forza Horizon, the inaugural 2012 entry in Playground Games’ open-world spinoff of the Forza Motorsport franchise; andThe Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, the well-regarded second iteration of CD Projekt Red’s Witcher series from 2011.
Note that Microsoft shifted Forza Horizon into “end of life” status in October 2016, which means that it is no longer possible to buy it or any of its downloadable content. You’ll need to already own the game, or acquire a disc copy, in order to play it on an Xbox One X.
Today’s announcement brings the total number of enhanced Xbox 360 games up to 11. The other seven are Assassin’s Creed, Fallout 3, Gears of War 3, Halo 3, Mirror’s Edge,The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and Skate 3.

Microsoft

Microsoft also announced today that it has added a new graphics setting for playing enhanced Xbox 360 titles on an Xbox One X. Players now have the choice of “graphics” or “performance” modes. The option is accessible from the Xbox 360 guide, in a new item called “Xbox One X Settings” under the settings menu.
The “graphics” setting enables Xbox One X enhancements, which, for Xbox 360 games, include features such as higher-quality anti-aliasing, increased texture detail and nine times the resolution (4K versus 720p). The “performance” setting turns those features off, but may deliver a higher frame rate. Microsoft noted that in performance mode, visuals “will be comparable to the experience on Xbox One or Xbox One S.”
