Hmmm I'm not sure about the chipset as Logitech has done a good job of hiding it, but its certainly not the same C media as in A4Tech, if its c-media at all. It can be plug and play, but the software gives you control over bass, treble and most of all the software allows you to turn off/on the dolby mode. It also allows voice morphing and some macros on the G buttons.
I would have upgraded my rig too but then I would have been left with a great rig and nothing decent enough to hear the sounds that come out of it
