Yup. They were running a promotion where the installation charges were 5000+tax which was around 6k. These days theyre running a promotion where installation is just Rs 4520 + 1 month charges (they have advance billing).
what about the modem price ? what did you paid for that ?

Yeah I guess it's a lot considering I paid next to nothing for PTCLs GPON.

I'll insist on using my own router because I've heard from a few friends in DHA that have TW who think that the WiFi from the ONT is really crappy.
The guys who'll come to configure your connection won't know shit. They're just technicians who install the drop fiber, splice in the patch cord and connect it to the ONT. All of the configuration is loaded automatically through TW's NMS and only their backend engineering team has any control over it.

Once the connection is installed, you'll have to email their support and get them to change your config. I would recommend asking them to put your ONT in bridge mode and then using your own router - but I have a strong feeling they won't do that. Abhi tak every reasonable request I've made (including asking them to enable FTP on my device, asking them to open a few obscure ports at their end etc) has been denied on account of "Sir this service isn't offered for residential customers".

I really don't know how StrikerX convinced them to put his device in bridge mode.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, maybe they didn't. Its plausible that he just disabled his the DHCP on his ONT and the static IP is still assigned to the ONT instead of his own router.
StrikerX pls explain?

The installation fee is the modem+drop fiber price. Thats what I paid in total (including 2k for the first month internet charges).

Fingers crossed then that they let me use bridge mode. I hate having double NAT and I would really prefer using my own router rather than some shit basic Huawei ONT.

Keep us updated, will ya?

Thanks!

I was talking to this SF rep the other day and he said SF is working on moving all of their network on to IPv6 by next year and all of their resendial customers soon after. Hopefully that'll be the end of this irritating double NAT.

They offered me bridge mode but I didn't need it because I am not behind their CGNAT.

p.s As for connection uptime/downtime. This sheet will tell you more about that-> uptimerobot-StrikerXTWGPON-logs - Google Sheets

That seems quite okay.

My PTCL GPON has had 45 disconnects this MONTH ALONE.

I've got the logs saved on my laptop but it's just unacceptable now. Even my DSL wasn't this bad.

GPON? I know DSL is quite bad in a number of places (but it's also pretty stable in a number of places) but... Could it be that you have a faulty piece of hardware?

Also, I have to check your PM but wildo later today.

You could disable the DHCP on the ON THE, set up a new wifi router, assign it an IP address, and let the wifi router assign IPs. The new wifi router would let you set up your own custom DNS (I've done this with PTCL and Nayatel).

Yes GPON. I've had the same Alcatel Lucent ONT since day one so it could be that it has developed faults over time even though it's not affected by loadshedding or random power outages from Bahria, it's been on UPS for as long as I can remember.

Even if it is faulty, PTCL seems to be making absolutely no effort to get it replaced.

The solution you've mentioned is what I'm currently using with PTCLs ONT and my Netgear router but it still means there are two private IP pools and therefore double NAT is still an issue. I want the ONT to act as a fiber to ethernet converter and my router to do the PPPoE requests, but we'll see how willing TW is to help out.

Oh - now I (briefly) understand NATs. And - out of curiosity - why is double NAT a problem? Don't online games (e.g. CS, or Fortnite) work without double NATs? And now, I see why adding another piece of hardware to the chain may be problematic (but since I'm not a gamer, I don't quite understand how it's detrimental, and why port forwarding - which I've never understood the concept of anyway - won't work).

Also, I wonder if I can save on the installation cost and have PTCL use my Nayatel ONT (which is also from Alcatel-Lucent).

Double NAT causes issues for devices outside your network to communicate with a device in your network.
Usually happens with online games, especially those that have a voice chat feature built-in. It simply won't work.

Fortnite works with double NAT but it's inconsistent and unreliable. Sometimes you'll get errors and won't be able to join a game, sometimes voice chat won't work at all till you restart either Fortnite or your router and so on.

Also, I wonder if I can save on the installation cost and have PTCL use my Nayatel ONT (which is also from Alcatel-Lucent).
Nope. FTTH is way more complicated than DSL in terms of what kind of equipment you can use.
The Alcatel Nayatel ONT is very different from the Alcatel PTCL ONT, so it won't work anyway, but Phase 1 is the only area in Bahria that they're using Alcatel ONTs, which will soon change according to people at the exchange. They'll shift our area to ZTE as well.

Everywhere else they have either FiberHome (some shit brand) or ZTE ONTs. Mostly ZTE though since that's what they're using on areas that have just recently gotten GPON. It'll probably be the ZTE F660.

CGNAT is Carrier Grade NAT, it's when your ISP gives everyone a shared IP address instead of everyone getting their own individual one.

For example your external IP is 110.37.214.10, normally you would be the only TW customer to have that IP assigned, but with CGNAT, someone else could have that IP assigned at the same time, and NAT is done by TWs servers rather than at your end, this does cause issues with online games and results in most of them showing strict NAT type.

Only way to get around this is to subscribe to static IP.

Hahahaha TW came to do a site survey on Friday and at the same time, the neighbours were getting Nayatel installed and the Nayatel guys kept giving me dirty looks. Saw the exact same team again today installing at someone else's house, followed by more dirty looks..... I take it they're not too thrilled that their sales guy never got a call back from me.

They give an android box for IPTV its expensive. I can only compare with Wateen who have good TV services. TW do have a lot more HD channels with Bein sports as well. Switching channels is not as fast as cable/digital cable but still bearable that it doesnt feel annoying. I talked to their COO Lahore as well he said they were planning on partnership with iflix and Starz play in a few months so that something to look forward to. Oh they have netflix preinstalled as well which is supposed to even work in HD (chinese unlicensed boxs dont have HD netflix) i saw it working in their office.

Whats impressed me is speed is consistenly over 15 Mbps on my 20Mbps even on international servers , speedof.me , testmy.net, speedtest.net, dslreports etc
Even better has very low bufferbloat meaning even when you are using your maximum bandwith downloading or uploading there isnt much hit on the latency, you can check that on speedtest of dslreports.
Told my brother to check fortnite ping was around 160s EU with much lower ping fluctuations than wateen and similar pings on overwatch.

Thanks for the TV (and internet) review.

160 on Fortnite seems like a dream on PTCL now. It's usually 190+ for me.

Once I actually get TW, I'll ask if they can optimise the route to lower it even further.

Did you get static IP?
