Damn it, Bahria phase 8 (Sector A/B/C areas) needs better options sooner! No Nayatel, no TW, only PTCL.

I've been trying to see the differences in the latencies between PTCL and TW1 - they're usually within 10 or 20ms of each other to international traffic, unless youre pinging Indian servers. And 10-20ms isn't bad, really.

PTCL's offering the installation for 5k, but I really don't want Smart TV and would prefer another solution instead. I don't think TW1 offers TV in Islamabad/Pindi. Nayatel does, but Nayatel's having problems today (right now) with the gateway being pinged at 50-60ms! (not usual, but just putting things in perspective - all ISPs have problems now and then).

So - back to my original question: which websites have better latencies (i.e. difference of 50ms or more) on TW1 vs. PTCL? No need to mention Indian websites since TW1 seems to have better latencies to those destinations than PTCL ever will.

I asked the TW sales guy today and he said you can subscribe to TW if you want, but it's technically not offered by them, and it will be run by DHA Teleman which is basically DHAs own ISP.

Don't get PTCLs SmartTV, August was the last month that I was paying installments for their shit box, but now that TW is available, I'm just terminating the connection with PTCL entirely.

Nayatel is proving to be too expensive for me in the long run with their insane installation costs and crappy internet packages, so I'll have TW for internet, shady Indian dish service for TV and PTCL for their garbage noisy unreliable landline.

So - no TW1 TV, but DHA Teleman? I remember back in the days they had decent channels and service, but that was MANY years ago. I don't know how they are now.

Installments? I'll just pay 5k and the monthly and not bother with the installments. Besides, I don't have another choice. TW is slow in their expansion, and if I've paid 5k for PTCL, it doesn't make monetary sense for me to pay for another provider (unless they switch it over for free... which they probably won't).

Nayatel is proving to be too expensive for me in the long run with their insane installation costs and crappy internet packages, so I'll have TW for internet, shady Indian dish service for TV and PTCL for their garbage noisy unreliable landline.
They are more expensive, and their capped bandwidth is dumb - but hey, OTOH, I have ~1 TB of bandwidth rolled over (any unused bandwidth is rolled over for the subsequent months)... so it doesn't matter that much though. Their TV service is much better than what PTCL offers (referring to their digital/HDTV) as far as picture quality is concerned.

Precisely.

At the time they didn't even ask, they just subscribed me and put the box on my bill as installments for 24 months. I asked if I could opt out and pay upfront but they said I can't. So I have had to pay extra for SmartTV every month for the pathetic laggy box.

Yeah I asked them that (I haven't applied for the connection since we haven't moved) if we could remove Smart TV from the bundle. They said no. They only have a discount on the installation. The last time we re-subscribed to Smart TV (we had an existing box), they gave us a new box, and asked us to pay 5k or do the installments. We told them we already had a box - they then said "fine, send in your old box and the new one is free". So no STB payment was made. I wonder if they'll do something like this with the new box as well.

OT: Also, looks like in the new place, Mobilink's 3G on 900Mhz doesn't want to play nice - I get good signals there, but I can't make or receive calls, nor can I use data - the phone latches onto a signal, but if it connects to 900Mhz, the other caller gets a "number not responding" message. If it connects to 2100Mhz, the signal is weaker, the data is slower, but it works. 4G works sometimes on the ground floor. This means I'm going to need something reliable - and wifi calling would be wonderful - but we have wonderful operators and wonderful ISPs.

On earth...Lahore
Transworld provided me with Huawei's HG8245H ONT.

The device has a USB port and can function as an FTP server but I couldn't get it to work. I've tried everything but no luck - I think Transworld has disabled the FTP function of the device because when I emailed them to inquire about it, they said and I quote "FTP services are only allowed for corporate customers." and that pisses me off to no end. I've paid 6k for the god damn device man, let me do what I want with it.

They've also locked out other perfectly normal functions that should be user accessible like setting custom DNS servers at the ONT level.

Edit: Yep, confirmed it. They've blocked out a lot of useful features of the ONT for god knows what reasons. Quite frustrating.

Soon as the PON connection is established, their NMS sends over a config file that overwrites any previous config on the ONT. That file locks out the admin account (telecomadmin), disables the FTP service, revokes SSH and Telnet access to the ONT from LAN side devices and blocks out the fields for custom DNS servers amongst other things.

Only the user account (root/admin) is available which is extremely limited in terms of what permissions it has; can't access any of the settings they've disabled.

wait you paid 6k for device ? i have paid 10k plus 2k taxes for it and currently on instalments for the device...

TW sales guy came by today, signed the customer agreement form and paid 17k for ONT, they said team will come after Eid for installation.

Can't wait to see the look on PTCLs face when I go to terminate my connection.

After Eid? That's almost two weeks (given the holidays).

Also, what exactly is the breakup of the 17k installation? Also, do they offer phone services as well (landline)?

They could've done it before Eid but I asked to do after Eid because I have to get PTCLs shit equipment removed first and I want to wall mount the TW ONT the same location where my PTCL one is currently mounted rather than drilling more holes into the wall.

Installation fees are 15k for Huawei Dual Band ONT and fiber drop cable and 2k in taxes.

The sales guy said they do offer landline, with an NTC number, so your landline number will be something like 051-92xxxxx because of that.

Ah right.

And out of curiosity (I'd like to know what I'll be getting myself into when I sign up to PTCL), why do you hate PTCL's GPON? All reasons, please.

Feel free to PM me so this thread doesn't get noisy.

Thats a lot of money - isn't Stormfiber available where you are?

Transworld puts its customers behind a CGNAT so you'll have to pay for a static IP if you need to use port forwarding for any reason. They say they have a different network for gamers but the servers I made on my PC wouldn't work. My friends couldn't connect to them cause of the CGNAT.

Also fair warning; that device you paid 17k for? you can't play around with it. Most of its functionality has been blocked/restricted. The most you can do is port forward at your end (which will be useless cause of the CGNAT), define a few parental control rules and mess around with the wifi.

Yeah I guess it's a lot considering I paid next to nothing for PTCLs GPON.

I consulted StrikerX before going ahead with the payment to make sure I wasn't getting into some shit that would be worse than PTCL.

He mentioned CGN and a restricted ONT, but I will be getting static IP since it's reasonable at 200/month extra and when they'll come by to configure the ONT, I'll insist on using my own router because I've heard from a few friends in DHA that have TW who think that the WiFi from the ONT is really crappy.

Unfortunately StormFiber and FiberLink aren't available here yet, and I believe TW and Nayatel are doing some sort of infrastructure sharing with their underground cables since they're both available in the same location, at the same time. Anyway, Nayatel has also started using CGN and their packages suck and they use the same crappy ONT as TW, so I chose TW instead due to the lower latencies and 70 Mbps package.

Yup. They were running a promotion where the installation charges were 5000+tax which was around 6k. These days theyre running a promotion where installation is just Rs 4520 + 1 month charges (they have advance billing).
