[h=2]PlayStation 4 slim images leak on auction site[/h]

Images purporting to show a redesigned PlayStation 4 with a slimmer case design have surfaced from an online auction listing.
The seller provided to Polygon these unboxed images of the new PS4. The unit appears thinner and its edges are rounded, unlike the squared-off corners of the original design.

The box says the console has a 500 GB hard drive. In June, Sony announced a new configuration of the PlayStation 4, codenamed Neo, was coming later this year but did not suggest what its design might look like. It's unknown if this is the Neo or an updated look for the old model. In June, Sony said that a new PS4 would arrive in spring 2017.
A media event unveiling the new Neo model is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on Sept. 7 in Times Square.

The PlayStation 4 Slim is real, unboxed and reviewed

No 4K support, but gosh it's cute.

Sony still hasn’t admitted that the PlayStation 4 Slim is a real thing that exists, but yet another unboxing video of the hardware has been released. This time the hardware has fallen into the hands of reporter Laura Kate Dale, who previously chided Sony for its unwillingness to change the PR strategy for the system after the hardware has been found in the wild.
You can check out the system in the video below. It looks pretty good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=U9V6VeZdMCQ

"It has a slightly improved controller, but the box itself doesn’t run any better," Dale reports. "Don’t expect Xbox One S-style HDR and 4K Blu-ray support. This is still a basic PS4 model with no internal upgrades over the previous iteration, and is not the upcoming PS4 Neo. It does not make games run better, or upscale them to 4K."
All in all, the changes are aesthetic, with a few minor controller updates.
"The USB ports on the system are now spread apart on the front of the system, with the power and eject buttons now clearly labeled and sitting inside the dipped recess at the front of the unit," Dale writes. "The power button features a line of tiny LED lights which replace the functionality of the old model’s light strip."
You can read the rest of the review at Let's Play Video Games.

[h=2]New, high-end PlayStation 4 Pro on sale this November[/h][h=3]Play with even more power[/h]

Sony’s more powerful PlayStation 4, the PS4 Pro, will cost $399 when it launches on Nov. 10. Sony revealed the pricing and release details today during today’s PlayStation Meeting, where the company showed off the system for the first time.
At $399, the console comes in at a higher price than the current, basic model PS4. That also cost $399 when it launched in November 2013.

Also announced was the console’s full name. Long known by its codename, rumored to be "Neo," Sony confirmed that the high-end model is called PlayStation 4 Pro.
Sony has plenty of other hardware arriving this year, like PlayStation VR. The virtual reality headset costs $399 and launches Oct. 13.
There’s also the PlayStation 4 slim, arriving on Sept. 15 for $299. The smaller form factor was unveiled today during the PlayStation Meeting, ahead of the PlayStation 4 Pro’s reveal.

[h=2]PlayStation 4 Pro can’t play 4K Blu-ray (update)[/h][h=3]Unlike Xbox One S[/h]

Sony announced a couple of new features that its newest console, the PlayStation 4 Pro, will come with, but neglected to mention some of the ones it would be without.
Based on specifications released by Sony in a press release, it looked like the PlayStation 4 Pro will not have a 4K Blu-ray player, but will instead just support regular HD Blu-rays and DVDs. Polygon spoke to a Sony representative for clarification and they confirmed that the PlayStation 4 Pro will not have a 4K-supported Blu-ray player.

In comparison, Microsoft’s Xbox One S does come with a player that does support 4K Blu-rays, and according to a Microsoft representative, the company's upcoming 4K-supported console, Scorpio, will have a 4K Blu-ray player.
"Both we and Sony are investing in 4K as the future of the industry," said Albert Penello, Senior Director of Product Management and Planning at Xbox told Polygon. "Xbox has a history of adding features to hardware revisions as part of our strategy."
Earlier in the day, Microsoft addressed the PlayStation Pro's lack of a 4K Blu-Ray player in a tweet, pointing to the fact that the Xbox One S has one.
Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House did specify that PlayStation 4 Pro users would be able to stream 4K content from a variety of services, including Netflix and YouTube, but never addressed the lack of an actual player. The Netflix app will be available at launch while the YouTube app will come a little later.
The PlayStation 4 Pro will be available to purchase on Nov. 10 for $399.

Brian Crecente and Arthur Gies contributed to this report.

Update: Microsoft confirmed in an interview with Polygon that the Socrpio would have an 4K Blu-ray player. The story has been changed to reflect the new information.

[h=2]PS4 Pro “Share” grabs 4k screens, caps 1080p video[/h][h=3]Video cap is at 30 fps[/h]

The PlayStation 4 Pro will grab 4K screenshots and capture 1080p video at 30 frames per second when using the Share button, PlayStation officials tell Polygon.
The console, which hits in November for $399, will also support 1080p video at 60 frames per second for broadcasting, remote play and share play, depending on the network environment, according to the spokesperson.

Broadcast and streaming will depend on the service provider.
YouTube/Dailymotion will support up to 1080p at 60 fps depending on users’ network environment, while Twitch will support up to 1080p at 30fps.
The original PlayStation 4 captures screens at 1080p and records video at 720p at 30 fps.
Earlier today, PlayStation officially unveiled the Playstation 4 Pro, a console that will come with more than double the GPU power of the current PS4, a boosted CPU clock speed and a 1TB internal hard drive.

So for someone who hasn't bought a PS4 yet, PS4 Pro seems to be the easy choice now. Price is right, and is coming out this year. Will get it instead of a normal PS4 now.

Was waiting for this, and I'm glad they finally revealed it.

Here’s how the new PlayStation 4 Pro stacks up against Xbox’s Project Scorpio

So many flops

At today’s PlayStation Meeting in New York City, Sony finally unveiled the hardware we all knew was coming: the PlayStation 4 Pro. Originally revealed in reporting from Kotaku in March of this year, the upgraded console’s hardware capabilities were later suggested by a report on Giant Bomb. This report indicated that the PlayStation 4 Pro, codenamed "Neo," would be approximately 2.25 times more powerful than the original PS4 model, pegging it at around 4.2 teraflops of computing power.
However, Sony’s early numbers were soundly leapfrogged by Microsoft with the announcement of Project Scorpio at this year’s E3. Microsoft told attendees at its press briefing that Scorpio would be "the most powerful console ever" with computational power measured at 6 teraflops. The question became how Sony would react.

At its press conference today, Sony demurred on discussions of the PS4 Pro’s hardware specs, but the company later issued a press release confirming earlier reports that the system will run at 4.2 teraflops. This corroborates Polygon’s earlier reporting that Project Scorpio will be, on paper, approximately 43 percent more powerful than the PS4 Pro.

It’s worth noting that this could change. First, Microsoft could conceivably reduce the power of Scorpio, though this seems unlikely, given that the company has put its shoulder into the "6 teraflops" marketing hook. Second, Sony could increase clock speeds in the PlayStation 4 Pro, which both Microsoft and Sony did before the launches of the Xbox One and PS4 in 2013.
But as importantly, there’s more we don’t know about the Xbox Scorpio. For example, we don’t know how much RAM it will have, despite knowing its dramatically increased memory bandwidth. That amount could make a major difference if it’s more than the existing Xbox One’s 8 GB of DDR3 RAM.
But that kind of information notwithstanding, the numbers seem clear: Microsoft’s Project Scorpio will be much more powerful than the PlayStation 4 Pro — assuming you can wait another year for it.

[h=2]Sony won't charge for PS4 Pro patches for 4K and HDR (update)[/h][h=3]*record skip noise*[/h]

Update: A representative for Sony told Polygon that the company "will not charge consumers for patches." We've asked Sony to clarify whether that applies only to games published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and will update when we hear back.

Jack Sipich, founder of developer Absinthe Games, said in a NeoGAF post that developers "are not allowed to charge you for patches or [PS4 Pro] feature updates."

Original story: Many existing PlayStation 4 games will be patched to add support for the PlayStation 4 Pro’s increased power and high dynamic range (HDR) color features. But the publishers of those games may charge players for those patches, reports Game Impress Watch.
When asked if the 4K or HDR patches for PS4 games would be free, Masayasu Ito, an executive vice president at Sony Interactive Entertainment, told the Japanese website Game Impress Watch (translated by Kotaku) that "it will be different for each title," depending on "the thinking of each licensee."
At that point, Ito was referring to third-party publishers. But when Game Impress Watch asked him to clarify whether the same would be true for games published by Sony, Ito said so, telling the site, "I think it will vary for each one of our titles."

A representative for Sony Interactive Entertainment told Polygon yesterday that there are at least two first-party games scheduled to be patched with PS4 Pro support at the launch of the console on Nov. 10: Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Sucker Punch’s Infamous: First Light. The rep also said that all first-party PS4 games coming in 2017 or later — including Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn, which was shown at the PlayStation Meeting this week — will support the PS4 Pro.
As for third-party titles, Square Enix’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Thekla’s The Witness, Activision’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, and Bethesda Softworks’ The Elder Scrolls Online are among the games in the PS4 Pro’s launch lineup. However, only the announcement from Bethesda noted that the game’s PS4 Pro patch — which, in that case, will allow the game to run in native 4K on the console — will be free.

The Sony spokesperson confirmed to Polygon that a number of first- and third-party titles will also support HDR, including Horizon Zero Dawn, Sony Bend’s Days Gone, Quantic Dream’s Detroit: Become Human and Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man.
We’ve asked Sony for further details on the pricing of PS4 Pro patches, and will update this article with any information we receive. For more on the PS4 Pro, check out our StoryStream.

[h=2]Sony boss: PS4 Pro is going after the PC audience[/h][h=3]Andrew House says the company wants to keep players from ditching consoles[/h]

As more people move to Windows PC as their gaming platform of choice, Sony hopes that its new, souped up PlayStation 4 will keep them from jumping ship. In an interview with the Guardian, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House said that the PlayStation 4 Pro was born from a desire to emulate the PC experience on console.

"There's a dip mid-console lifecycle where the players who want the very best graphical experience will start to migrate to PC, because that's obviously where it's to be had," House told the publication. "We wanted to keep those people within our eco-system by giving them the very best and very highest [performance quality]."
The PS4 Pro, equipped with 4K-streaming and HDR compatibility right out of the box, is meant to be an improvement upon the standard PS4, aimed at those wanting upgraded graphics. PC gaming rigs are customizable and expandable, but the Pro still offers a sizable boost over the PS4, a difference that will be apparent to console gamers.
Yet the hardware's reveal this week, ahead of its Nov. 10 release, was met with both criticism and ribbing from fans and competitors. Microsoft has had a field day — several field days, in fact — with the PS4 Pro's shortcomings when compared to Project Scorpio, its Xbox One revision. That console was teased earlier this year at E3 2016, where Microsoft said it would have a significant power boost over the current Xbox One. Its specs, as Microsoft has told Polygon and social media repeatedly, will also outrank those of the PS4 Pro's.
Project Scorpio isn't out until holiday 2017, however; PS4 Pro has its chance to lure PC gamers back to consoles first, when it arrives in November.

[h=2]Will any PS4 games support HDR when the feature launches next week?[/h][h=3]Sony seems to have surprised developers[/h]

Sony announced during its PlayStation Meeting this week that it will add support for high dynamic range (HDR) color to every PlayStation 4 next week with a system software update. That’s all well and good, assuming that the feature works as promised — we’re still awaiting technical details from Sony, since it doesn’t seem like the original PS4’s HDMI port would be compatible with HDR video.
But what good is HDR support if there aren’t actually any games to show it off?

Thekla, the Jonathan Blow-led studio behind The Witness, announced yesterday that it will patch the PS4 version of the game to work with the PS4 Pro. Since The Witness already runs at 60 frames per second on PS4, the update is focused on increasing the visual fidelity of the game. People playing the game on a 1080p TV will also see benefits, including a bump in resolution to native 1080p.

The studio is also working on HDR support for The Witness on PS4, but it’s still early days. "We don’t know the technical details of how it will work, yet, but provided that nothing prevents us, the Witness patch will use HDR on all PS4s when available," said Blow. Thekla is currently planning to release the update alongside the PS4 Pro’s launch on Nov. 10 — not next week, when HDR goes live on the existing PS4 and the "slim" model.
The Xbox One version of NBA 2K17 will support HDR when the game launches Sept. 20, making it the first Xbox One game to offer HDR color for players who own an Xbox One S. (Two of Microsoft’s big exclusives this fall, Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4, will also support HDR.) A 2K Sports representative confirmed to Polygon yesterday that NBA 2K17 developer Visual Concepts will add HDR to the PS4 version of the game with a post-launch patch, but the spokesperson could not specify timing at this point.
As for Sony-published games, a representative for the company told Polygon today that "some existing titles will be patched for 4K/HDR support at the PS4 Pro launch timing" — which, again, isn’t until mid-November.
Visual Concepts/2K Sports The Indiana Pacers’ Paul George in NBA 2K17. [h=2]Caught off guard[/h]The Witness creator Jonathan Blow said that his team was surprised by Sony’s announcement of the HDR firmware update for non-Pro PS4 models.

"We thought we were working on HDR support only for the PS4 Pro," said Blow. "Sometimes Sony even surprises developers!" He added that Thekla was also "surprised" by some of the final hardware specifications of the original PS4, when Sony unveiled that console at the PlayStation Meeting in February 2013.

Yes, it’s a good thing for developers to have access to more power and new tools; indeed, Blow said Thekla thinks "it’s great" that Sony is adding HDR to every PS4 in the world. The studio wasn’t planning to update The Witness until the launch of the PS4 Pro anyway, so it makes sense for that indie team to bundle the graphical upgrade and HDR support into one patch.
We don’t know whether NBA 2K17 developer Visual Concepts was also "surprised" by the announcement of the HDR firmware update for all PS4s. But if the game will already support HDR at launch on Xbox One, it stands to reason that the PS4 version could’ve also offered HDR— if the studio knew ahead of time that the firmware update was coming.
Sony certainly told developers about the PS4 Pro well in advance, but perhaps the non-Pro HDR update came in hot and was confirmed at the last minute. And PS4 owners will likely have a shorter wait to play HDR content than Xbox One S buyers: Microsoft launched that console at the beginning of August, and the first game to support HDR, NBA 2K17, isn’t coming out until seven weeks afterward. It’s a bummer for Sony, Microsoft and owners of HDR televisions, all of whom would like to actually use the latest, greatest display technology in their games.

I'm very much interested in this Playstation 4 Pro upgrade. I was planning an upgrade to my existing PC (either skylake or kabylake) with DDR4 memory while retaining rest of my setup as is. But this new PS4 model has me intrigued.

Any idea how much it'll sell for in PAK ???

When's the Xbox Scorpio coming out ????
