First up, we should tackle the issue of how reliable the leak is and by extension, whether the proposed spec is real or not. Up until very recently, exposure to 'PlayStation 4K' throughout the development community was limited. We have been sitting on a number of details awaiting a second source before going to press, but events have overtaken us somewhat - Sony is now openly sharing this specification with developers and while Giant Bomb beat us to the punch, we have access to the same documentation. There is no doubt - this is real. This is the new, more powerful PlayStation 4.
The release window is unclear, but the schedule for hardware roll-out to developers is black and white: development kits prototype are on their way to studios now. A test kit (debug station, if you like) housed within a non-final chassis - which Sony is asking developers not to show - follows shortly. A second-gen test kit, again not based on the actual retail shell, goes out in June. Sony gives more intensive Neo briefings at its DevCon event in in May, while code submission for Neo-compatible titles begins in August.

Sony seems committed to keeping the NEO and the original PS4 player bases connected. As such, there will be no NEO-only games, and Sony will not let developers separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN. Likewise, Sony explicitly and repeatedly states that developers cannot offer exclusive gameplay options or special unlockables for NEO players

Well, according to Sony's own documents, there is a focus on delivering 4K gaming content, though upscaling to UHD resolution is likely. Owners of 1080p screens can expect benefits too, explicitly stated as:

• Higher frame-rates
• More stable frame-rates
• Improved graphics fidelity
• Additional graphics features

When is PlayStation 4K/Neo coming out?

Developers have the ability to add Neo support to their existing PlayStation 4 titles coming out in September via a day one patch, while dual base/Neo supported titles are expected to arrive from October onwards. Sony isn't telling developers when the unit will actually launch and states that it's perfectly OK with Neo-compatible titles shipping before the actual hardware. Either the platform holder is playing its cards close to its chest or else the firm itself simply isn't clear when it plans to launch the kit.

Console life cycles could be getting shorter






Sony is working on a "PlayStation 4.5," a more powerful version of the PlayStation 4 that will be able to play games at 4K resolution, according to a report from Kotaku.
Kotaku cited multiple "developers who have spoken with Sony" about the purported console. Those sources indicated that the "PS4.5" — no word on whether that's the official name — will include improved graphics hardware to power 4K games, and additional processing power for PlayStation VR, the virtual reality headset that Sony is releasing in October.


There are no indications of a release window or price for the "PS4.5," although one of Kotaku's sources told the publication that such a device might not be released this year. Sony currently sells the PS4 for $349.99, having dropped the price of the console in October from $399.99, which is what it cost when it launched in November 2013. PlayStation VR will cost $399, although that does not cover the required PlayStation Camera accessory.
The PS4 cannot currently output 4K content, and its optical drive cannot read 4K Blu-ray discs. Masayasu Ito, executive vice president at Sony Computer Entertainment, said in an interview with 4Gamer in October (via Siliconera) that Sony was considering an enhanced PS4 that could support 4K Blu-ray discs. Neil Hunt, Netflix's chief product officer, told Huffington Post UK in January that Sony had "promised" Netflix that a new revision of the PS4 hardware with 4K support was coming. And Netflix told Forbes in February that it expected hardware refreshes this fall from both Sony and Microsoft with 4K video playback for the PS4 and Xbox One, respectively.







If Sony is indeed considering a mid-cycle hardware upgrade, the company may not be alone. During a presentation to the media last month, Xbox head Phil Spencer posited a future in which Microsoft will "come out with new hardware capability during a [console] generation."
Spencer contrasted the typical console life cycle with that of computers, smartphones and tablets, telling Polygon that the latter category of hardware offers "a very continuous evolution cycle in hardware, whereas between console generations most of the evolution is making it cheaper and potentially making it smaller." He also noted that PCs and mobile devices gradually get more and more powerful without locking out existing software like new gaming platforms usually do.
In particular, Spencer highlighted PlayStation VR as an example of Sony adding a new feature to the PS4 — virtual reality — without "changing what the core console is about," suggesting that Microsoft would want to do something similar, but in a way that would deliver better-playing games. Spencer later noted in an appearance on Major Nelson's podcast that he wasn't saying Microsoft would allow Xbox owners to open up their console and upgrade the parts. Instead, said Spencer, his comments were meant as a "longer-term vision statement."

Given the backlash that Phil Spencer got a while ago on hardware improvements for the X1, I dont think anyone would be that stupid to go this lane. Besides that, alot of console owners are extremely price sensitive and I dont think a 4k console would be any less than a 1000 bucks.

it is not possible to for them to launch a PS4. Even if they set the price to 399$ for new console. Because it will make all current Ps4 owner a useless. While the Game developer will rush to build or remaster all game for newer PS4.5 the customer will have to buy new console. Which is not good for console economy.

Unless they are planning a upgrade unit or something similar. Personal i think will be rumor or That will new PlayStation lineup...

This won't have any impact on the PS4, as it will continue to run future games at 1080p (or lower). The same games would be rendered at a higher resolution on the PS4.5.

Looking back at the Sony's working habits. They are not very good at making new Consoles backward compatible. Making consoles entirely from scratch to achieve 4K or 1080p for VR is easy rather then making console does the same work and also compatible to older architecture.

Honestly, I don't think there will be a change in architecture at this point. It's still going to be an x86 platform, and AMD is likely to remain the manufacturer. Think of it as a 22nm APU with more space on-die for faster CPU cores and additional Compute units. And, not to forget, accommodating memory would be even easier now thanks to HBM.

this hardware is entirely possible....even as a stand alone accessory. Just look at the laptop industry as an example. Alienware offers the Amplifier and so does Razer. It could be that Sony and MS are producing something similar to this! An external proprietary graphics card. Its not a coincidence that 2 weeks ago, Phil from Xbox was talking about a mid-cycle hardware refresh....and now this news from Sony. They are DEFINITELY working on this...most probably in close conjunction with AMD....which is why they know each others plan.

'PlayStation 4.5' for VR and 4K games - Reality or Rumor !!!

Sony is reportedly planning a newer and more powerful version of the PlayStation 4 with increased graphical power and games running at 4K resolution, according to multiple developer sources.
The speculation comes on the heels of Microsoft hinting that hardware upgrades were a possibility for the Xbox One going forward.
According to Kotaku, the PS 4.5 has an upgraded GPU that would support high-end 4K resolution gaming and resource-heavy games supported by PlayStation VR that's slated for launch in October 2016. It isn't clear whether the PS 4.5 would come in the form of an upgrade for the current PS4 or in an entirely new box.
Although it is common for new versions of consoles to come out during a console generation, the changes are usually minor features that would include a slimmer design or add-ons like integrated wireless.
If the PS 4.5 console would be released, it would be a significant step-up in terms of improved graphical and processing capabilities, despite not being a new full-generation system. It would also make it a more competitive console in the world of virtual reality with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which both require higher desktop graphics. Developers might also be able to use the PS 4.5's increased horsepower to bring more sophisticated visual effects to their titles as well. The current PS4 can output 4K photos and videos, but cannot support 4K resolutions for games.
It is unclear if the rumoured version's current name is in fact the "PlayStation 4.5" or just a nickname. According to Kotaku, one source said the device felt "exploratory" and may not even be released this year.
However, if they do release a mid-generation system, it would allow Sony to stamp a higher price for the console after the PS4's prices dropped to $350 (£240) last fall and further down to $300 during the holiday season. There is also no word on how games would be differentiated between the traditional PS4 and the new rumoured console.
When Kotaku contacted Sony for comment, the company gave the expected response in an email:"We can't comment on rumors or speculation."

Well time will tell eventually how far this news is true but this sounds pretty awesome if a new ps4 with 4k option comes in and if cross play gets implemented as well. This would be huge leap in console gaming.:v:

It does make sense you know. A PS4-K for 4K gaming. Obviously not all devs would release 4K textures n stuff.
