PTCL walas came yesterday on my complaint regarding the upload rate. After various calls to 1212, internal numbers, a TeamViewer session - conclusion was that I'm getting 50mb down but speedtest shows 48 because 'system is consuming the rest'. Proof? Run a speedtest and then check resource manager. It shows 50mbps receiving speed.

And upload.. Sir we can't do anything about the 37mbps upload rate. Please look into business packages.

So I'm going to be downgrading my connection to 8mbps today. I've already put forward the request. All this shiny new equipment for blazing fast 8mbps internet :tv:

The Task Manager shows the real speeds your computer is using, so they're correct on that part. If it shows 50Mbps down, then it's well within range. And almost all of the residential connections have a contention ratio (although I've yet to witness it myself).

For upload speeds - unless you're a heavy torrenter, you generally don't need to. I remember my friend in Manchester had 55Mbps downstream and 3Mbps upload speed. On fiber. Virgin Media fiber. Laws there are more strict on what you can use your connection for (you get letters from ISPs for an inordinate amount of torrenting, or get throttled during the football matches if you use IPTV, and stuff like that).

It could also be that your PC is indeed using 2Mbps for something else and the remaining 48Mbps is what is being left by your PC - so perhaps check your computer for any hidden updates or malware?

1212 handles GPON complaints? Bastards lied to me.

It's probably just Alcatel equipment being shit as usual. I went to the exchange on Thursday and met the AM so I could close my connection, and I told him that you're facing similar issues in Wah Cantt which also uses Alcatel equipment and he didn't seem surprised at all. Him and everyone else who installs this stuff all agree that PTCL GPON works best with Huawei and ZTE equipment.

The support from Alcatel is garbage and it honestly seems like these guys don't know how to use it since whenever you ask them to do something, they're always clueless and have to keep calling different people from the NOC to actually get connected to someone who understands the problem.

Did you check how much you were getting on direct downloads through IDM?

That's basically their internal contact line right? And well, what's the point of paying this much for a 50mb that's not even true 50mb. Bdw is it possible to buy a ZTE/Huawei ONT on OLX and use that?

Can you link me to a file hosted on some local server that I can check direct download speed on? I tried a few files on US/EU servers.. Unstable speeds (2-4 MB/s).

On idle, the PC isn't using anything so it can't be malware, unless this malware only activates when I'm doing a speedtest. And you're right 37mb is more than enough upload speed. My issue is based on principle. Nowhere on their website do they mention a difference in down and up rates. On 25mb, I was being given 24.7/24.7. On 50, its 48.7/37ish. Why?

They used to tell people to call 1212 a few years ago when incompetent 1218 couldn't understand the complaints. But I called 1212 once and they said we are DSL Technical Service Desk, we don't handle GPON complaints.

And well, what's the point of paying this much for a 50mb that's not even true 50mb. Bdw is it possible to buy a ZTE/Huawei ONT on OLX and use that?
I wish it was that easy. ONT isn't the only equipment used here. The OLT and other equipment at the Wah exchange that got upgraded as part of NTP is also Alcatel.

Testing on local won't prove anything. When I was having the weird download speed issue, all local servers were performing perfectly. IDM downloads from YouTube were at 12-13 MB/s, along with some stuff from Apple servers, but the second I'd try any European server, or anything hosted outside Pakistan, the speed would drop down to 100 kB/s. Trying to explain that to them was a pain in the ass since speed tests were showing 100 Mbps and they said 'Sir theek tou hai' and would just close the complaint.

Check an EU based download link to see if you're getting above 5.5 MB/s.

Here's one that I use:

https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=6006931924117887927

After hitting start download, choose the UK mirror, and if that's shit, then try the Germany one and see what speed you get.

For some weird reason, only 25 Mbps packages have symmetrical up/down on PTCL.

All other packages have 75% of their download speed as upload. So in your case 37.5-38 Mbps upload was normal.

I see what you're saying, but basically, this:

In other news, this is the second time my PTCL fiber has disconnected (no PON line, red flashing LOS red light). On a Saturday. And the Bahria Exchange guys? I really don't want to go and see their faces because there's a Smart TV billing issue. And the official TAT for internet-related issues is 48 hours (last time, they came after four days).

Well... the car also broke down lol. And Uber will take around 10 minutes to come here. Careem will take 5, but they've decided to lock me out of my own account (they haven't otten back to me).

I'm in a lockdown :/

You're in a double NAT setup.

If you don't want to bridge (which I would highly recommend), then you can set up the router as an access point. That way DHCP will still be handled by the modem.

I can't even tell if the equipment is bad / unreliable, or PTCL is just terrible at deploying it.

Alcatel is used by lots of large ISPs all over the world and despite reading a lot on networking forums, I've never heard of problems as bad as this.

Gotta be incompetent operators. I mean they couldn't even figure out the issue last time so they just replaced the ONT and probably changed my port or whatever too because I got different optical power values after the new ONT was installed.
