Is PTCL shit for just me or all of us for the past week?

How dependent are we on IMEWE, pings to EU are f*cked and packet loss is unreasonably high.
It's impossible and very frustrating when you empty an entire SMG mag in someone and they don't die cause you're lagging too much. Getting about 300 ms in BF4 with extreme packet loss.

For me Ptcl seems to be working better. Youtube streaming is better and getting 50-60 ping on Valve Dubai server.

IMEWE (and most undersea cables) are usually held up because the supplier (ASN in this case) needs permission from the respective country to perform the repair (Egypt in this case). Most countries fast-track these things and grant permission, whereas some don't because of their own internal administration process. AFAIK permission hasn't been granted by Egypt's Ministry of Telecom yet, atleast I didn't see it until 28th Dec.

Most likely unrelated and possibly due to PTCL finally being able to get direct peering with Valve's provider in DXB.

Dubai Ping's have improved around 85-90ms for me i usually get 135ms on Singapore Waited 2 longs years for this day now let's hope they only improve on top of things not make things worse

Checked with BT Exchange.

I noticed they have a map and marked areas with GPON. Phase 1-4 is all marked as PLANNED GPON. Safari III is GPON while Phase 5-6 is still COPPER and no mention of GPON :-/.

Confirmed by Manager too. I asked why send the pamphlets then and he said wo bhejne mai ham jaldee kar dete hain... says some areas are marked for rehabilitation i.e. Fiber cabinets instead of GPON and goes, I think Phase 5 comes in that. I hope this isn't true.....

Phase 1 is partially done hehe, Phase 2 isn't, parts of Phase 3 are almost done, some streets in Phase 4 are being done.

They're probably not doing Phase 5 and 6 due to lack of demand and few customers having PTCL. Majority of the people there either have Zong 4G or WiTribe.

Maybe after the fiber cabinet upgrade then you'll get GPON eventually [emoji23]

TBH if you already have a healthy copper line, the addition of a fiber cabinet will make a minor difference. Only if you're really close to it, will you have a possible advantage of upgrading to a 12 or 16 Mbps DSL package.

The copper DP is only two houses away from me currently. Where is GPON connection taken from? Fiber Cabinet? Or underground directly somehow?

Fiber cabinet -> Underground handhole > They'll pull the drop cable from some sort of fiber splitter and that'll come inside the house and be spliced and so on.

Well it depends on the equipment at the exchange and the equipment inside the fiber cabinet.

That all has to be upgraded to support GPON, but once there is a fiber Cabinet, gathering enough customers and complaints will eventually convince them to expand there as well.

I have shifted my home recently and have only a couple of Options now , either i can opt for PTCL 8-12 MBPS via Copper , or there is Fariya Cable Network being offered in the neighborhood , my main usage is either COD or BF4 on the PS4.

Any advice as to what should i do ? ( apparently no Fiber based providers have reached Gulistan-e-Jauhar , Karachi).

I assume that on Copper based packages PTCL only provides 1mbps as upload speed ?

Yes only 1 Mbps upload and because of PTCLs abysmal routing, your ping on COD and BF4 will be high.

Nah bro , the Fariya guy was acting like he had google fiber or something. He also stated that the highest package i can offer you is 1-4mbps which will be shared. I just got off on the phone with PTCL CSR and they told me that VDSL is available in my area, they can offer me 8mbs Down / 2mbps up via Fiber Optic, would that suffice ?


Edit : i did ping 8.8.8.8 through the Fariya guy and it came out to be a constant 112ms, while on PTCL Charji (which is use) it hovers at around 150-180ms

Ping a few valve servers on Fariya to get an idea:

sgp-1.valve.net
dxb.valve.net

If you want VDSL, opt for 12 or 16 Mbps to get a decent upload. The former will give you 3 up and the latter, 4 up.

The pings will be usual PTCL pings but the internet will be good enough for gaming and shaft not. I have PTCL and regularly play BF4 on PS4, aside from the odd day where ping will be higher than normal, it's usually around 180 on EU servers.

Can be related because Ptcl might be using a backup route till the cable issue is fixed and pings will be the same again.
