So you are saying that VoLTE will take few more years?

Sent from my Nokia 7 plus using Tapatalk
In our market ofc, it is still in its infancy (wrt to data), our data usage is less. As for VoLTE, manufacturer's lack of support currently is/will be the biggest hurdle so yeah I think it will take a few years to mature VoLTE here, for now its only about readiness.

One guy (who handles Mobilink's network) said the hardware aspect of these operators are all the same - ZTE, Huawei, Nokia, Ericsson - doesn't matter which "antenna" you put on, but what matters is how well you manage it. Not sure if that statement is qualified with multiple terms and conditions, but Mobilink replaced their equipment with Ericsson AFAIK (or maybe they're using legacy Warid Ericsson equipment?) but ever since the upgrade, there was a HUGE difference in the 4G speeds. And the guy works in Ericsson.

Now, if Telenor's swapping, then it must mean that the antenna itself doesn't matter (as in, it's like saying the monitor of the computers doesn't matter) but the rest of the hardware determines how well it'll run. Otherwise why would people opt for network swaps?

At the same time, they say the Chinese vendors have almost as good quality an antenna as the other European vendors - but then, Mobilink isn't using Huawei exclusively (it's mixed in their network AFAIK), and Telenor's switching... could there be some truth?

Also, StrikerX, can you share when you "last heard" the 20% stat? Also, zafarabbasrizvi, Telenor's coverage isn't exactly strong. Telenor does several things right but their network is not one of them. Not for the past several years, and not at this stage. Let's hope the swap brings something positive.

I don't know about the quality of Telenor Network, but as far as their 4G availability is concerned, they are way ahead than Mobilink. Their 4G is available even at small towns now. At least what I have experienced in central Punjab where they have a huge market share. But Jazz 4G availability still only exists in big cities only. Thats all I am saying

I understood what you meant, and was thinking of trying an experiment. In my TV lounge, we get Zong and Mobilink's 4G signals. But you can guess which one works and which one's speeds are limited to 3 Mbps max on 4G, and which one goes up to 20Mbps or so in the same EXACT spot (on the same sofa).

It's one thing to have signal. It's another thing to actually have usable signal. And I face this issue with calls on Mobilink 3G (specifically 900Mhz) at my home, and data on Zong 4G at my home.

Telenor doesn't have 4G coverage at my house. The strongest is Mobilink, followed by Zong (given the direction their antennas are located, even though both are almost equidistant from my house). Networks roll out differently. Mobilink has 3G in a number of places but they also don't (Khanpur Dam) where others do. The question is - is your signal usable or not?

Zong 2G isn't. Mobilink 2G is. And IIRC, Telenor 2G is as well. And this is in case you're left with the worst possible service.

For the most part I figure yes and Telenor's contract with Nokia is to manage the network for Telenor and handle the vendors themselves (ZTE/Huawei etc). Again though, don't have a networks background so not the best person to answer this :p

Last December. Telenor has roughly ~11k sites of which ~7k have been migrated to 4G and from those ~7k, ~2k have been swapped over to Nokia.

Thanks. So for the 2k swapped over to Nokia, is it the software that's swapped, or the antennas, or...?

I know you said you're not a networking guy, but I'm trying to understand what exactly entails in a network swap if the hardware vendors are the same.

As far as I understand it, ZTE hardware and on top software replaced with Nokia.

Oh - so that means each tower has its own software to run? Interesting.

That's like saying the wheels of the car have their own software, and so far, only one wheel's software has been replaced.

This could explain the garbage call quality on Jazz, especially during off-net calls.

I called a Telenor number, and then later a Ufone number as well. I could hear and understand the other person, but the voice was muffled.

Decided to open ServiceMode while the call was running to see if it was on 2G or 3G, and unsurprisingly it was on 2G, but I noticed it said AMR_NB instead of AMR_WB.

Now, just to test, I called my other Jazz number and it stayed on 3G (2100 MHz) and said AMR_WB, but when you call another network, it switches to 2G (900 MHz) and uses the AMR_NB codec.

Check the screenshot below.

The phone dropping to 2G isn't because it's an off-net call - that's just some radio work going bonkers. Force your phone to stay on 3G and it'll show AMR-WB, but since two different operators are involved, the voice will be as bad as regular PSTN calls (or AMR-NB), since there's a bottleneck.

Sometimes, during an on-net call and in fluctuating signal conditions, calls on my phone drop from 3G to 2G - unless I tell my phone to not use 2G ever.

PC Gamer score of 58/100 for Hellblade 2??? Is it really worse than Gollum that was 64/100? Microsoft games can't even come close to high scores of Sony exclusives apparently.

About the Microsoft (and Sony) debate, I feel both have become too greedy and losing their minds over corporate greed. Personally, I will never buy any console next gen and switch to PC gaming where democracy reins.
