I have an issue (again). I mean I've had it forever but I'm just starting to realize how bad it is.

If I set my SIM to 3G/2G mode (no LTE), it shows the H+ with full signals in my death-zone (my room). If I open fast.com, it will take 20-30 seconds to start showing any speed (meaning immense lag/latency). When it eventually starts, it shows a semi-decent 5-6mbps down.

On LTE, even with 1-2 lines, I get a good 30-35mbps. But it is unreliable because the phones keeps switching between 2-3 different towers (LTE/3G) and keeps dropping calls/texts.

What's happening here?

When you're connected to LTE, go to settings > about > status > SIM status and check the signal strength in its dbm and asu values and post them here.

Quick answer:

4G isn't strong enough (according to the phone) to stay connected to because of the ASU and RSRQ and other parameters the phone decides on - so it falls back to 3G.

As for the initial lag and the subsequent decent speeds:
- lag: poor signal quality - the phone has to make an effort to try and initiate a connection to the tower on HSPDA (which subsequently converts to DC-HSPDA). Dual carrier allows for lower latency. Think of it like the engine of a car warming up.
- speed after initial lag: the dual carrier helps in this. Tremendously. Think of it as a Suzuki FX that has finally gotten warmed up, and a nitro boost has been engaged.

-104dBm, 29asu.

Getting 20mbps.

Good analogies.

Poor network :(

It's not that bad. My S8+ used to hang on till around -113 dBm and then cut off back to 3G.

-104 shouldn't fall back to 3G so quickly. In fact as I'm typing this my signal is -102 and I never fall back to 3G where I'm sitting right now.

The signal falling down to 3G depends on different factors, apparently. I've never understood them myself since sometimes, I can force the phone to stay in 4G with perfectly usable signal - but when I revert back to auto, it falls back down to 3G.

On stock Android phones, you can access the hidden network menu by going to *#*#4636#*#* and selecting LTE or LTE/WCDMA, or toggle airplane mode and it'll go back to normal.

Oh this is in my bedroom. 4G works here (on a single line). Its when I move away from this room when things start getting messy.

Makes no difference in the rest of the world. American carriers decided to call 3.5G as 4G, and actual 4G as LTE.

Because they didn't want to invest much in actual 4G, so they did this. But if you check the phones themselves, under the network options, you'll see it says H+.

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
