Central Intelligence (2016)

Central Intelligence is sorta of a buddy-spy comedy and it's about an average joe hung up on life over past issues, until he meets up with one of his high school batch mate, and things suddenly turn upside down for him.

A movie like this only works if the two leads meld together, and boy oh boy did they ever in this movie. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart both were excellent in this movie. I loved their chemistry, their banter and their relationship. They clearly seemed to be having a great time in their roles, and as a result, the movie as a whole became a lot more fun. Also, I liked it more that they weren't playing their usual selves. It was just hilarious to see The Rock play this man-child agent, he always manages to bring so much energy into every role. And Kevin Hart dialed back a lot. He was the average joe, the normal guy in this movie and I liked that. You do still get the usual Kevin hart outbursts/moments, in small doses.

Aside from these two, there was a whole story revolving around government secrets etc, which was pretty cliched but it worked for the movie, whenever they didn't took it seriously. The story was just there so that these two could do their thing. Everyone had storm trooper aim enabled, which instead of distracting, made for some hilarious situations. I had some great laughs.

The movie also had a couple of great short roles. Like Jason Bateman, who I love, and I believe is the perfect choice if you want someone to be a major dick, because he does it so so well.

But when the movie did took itself seriously, that's where it faltered. Those scenes bogged it down, and the story itself was nothing new nor was the execution anything great, so nothing of interest was to be had. Plus, it was pretty predictable. The movie also had a strong anti-bullying message, but the way it ended was so cliched and cringe worthy. They could have done a lot better because that ending was just meh.

All in all, despite some shortcomings, The Rock and Kevin Hart managed to make this a good watch. Both were amazing together and I would love to see them do it again. A good comedy, definitely worth a watch.

Suicide Squad (2016)

Suicide Squad is the third and latest entry into the DCEU, and is about a bunch of bad guys that are rounded up to fight for someone else. And just like this year's BvS, this movie received overwhelmingly negative reviews by the critics and was divided among the fans. I was super curious to watch it because unlike many, I actually enjoyed the DCEU till this point. Enjoyed both Man of Steel and BvS. But unfortunately, this one's a mess.

The majority of the movie just feels choppy, editing was all over the place. Like they had a final product but because of disagreements, they took out a lot of scenes, shorten the runtime, and added others, making a giant choppy mess in the end. Scenes don't properly flow, including the flashbacks. Some scenes feel like they were added later (Probably the re-shoots) and they definitely didn't fit, particularly the elevator scene with Harley. The songs were all over the place as well. Some worked with their respective scenes, but most of them didn't, and again it felt like something added later, to give the movie a more jolly feel. And difference between development given to each member of the squad is astounding. Some were completely left in the dust, while some got a bit of line here and there, while some got a lot more development. Basically, to me it felt like that the movie reeked of studio involvement.

Also, the focus was just off. Movie is called Suicide Squad yet there is a whole lot of other stuff that gets way too much screentime. The whole end of the world plot was totally generic, uninteresting and unnecessary. The villain wasn't good, and the movements were weird, and not in a good way. Joker-Harley romance was also something padded on, and could have been removed in exchange for more screentime with the squad.

Speaking of the Joker, he and his whole weird mafia/gangster lord type vibe didn't work for me. Jared Leto felt like he was trying too hard at times. There were moments where I saw the Joker I wanted in him, but those moments were swiftly followed by over the top feel that he gave most of the time. And that laugh....Yeah NOPE!!

Even the action was mostly OK, apart from a couple of good scenes. There was no proper thrill, no proper buildup. Too many cuts. Say what you want about Snyder, but you have to admit that the dude can atleast direct amazing action sequences.

And all of that sucks because there is stuff in the movie that works, like the main squad. Will Smith as Deadshot was great. He played his usual cool self and it worked. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn was sexy and mostly good, because there were few instances where her dialogues gave me cringe. These two had a good chemistry together too. Also liked other members like El Diablo, Killer Croc, and captain Boomerang, all of whom were likable, had some fun moments etc.

Plus, among all the mediocrity, there were glimpses of what the movie could have been like. Fun moments between the squad, some touchy moments, rare cool action sequences, full group scenes or rather a scene, the bar scene and such.

Ultimately, The movie is like a mediocre cake covered with a thin layer of good frosting. The overall taste isn't bad, but it isn't good either. You enjoy the good frosting for a short while, and then have to deal with a whole lot of mediocre tasting body of the cake. I was disappointed. I really REALLY wanted to like this film. Pushed back all the negative or positive criticism and went in with an open mind. I'm not too hopeful what the extended cut will improve as 13 mins of footage isn't much, and I'm guessing it is Joker footage mostly.

It's funny that after watching this, I respect MCU more now considering what they were able to do with the more risky project: Guardians of the Galaxy.

Suicide Squad 9/10 (no offence to above 6/10)

I think i m a fanboy of Superhero movies....
loved every bit of the movie, specially harley and deadshot..... Didn't liked JOKER compared to one in Trilogy (may be that's because he didn't get much screen time)

To each his own bro. :)

I love superhero movies too, not a fanboy of course ( :p ). Both MOS and BvS were great IMO. This just didn't click with me in most areas. Still excited for Justice League and Wonder Women.

The Legend of Tarzan: This could’ve been a much better movie. Didn’t take advantage of the jungle and Tarzan. No Swinging in trees or that kind of action. Tarzan (Alexander) was OK though 6.5/10.

Lights Out: This movie should be watched with high volume and with those people who don’t like darkness in their rooms especially in bedrooms (It’ll be fun :p). The idea was good but the execution was not that satisfying. I was expecting some more monster / witch scenes. Not too scary but still a good movie 7/10.

Ice Age Collision Course: A fun movie. For me third & fifth part were the best because of Buck I like all those characters but I just love BUCK. Some good laughs here and there. I laughed hard on that river crossing scene. I really enjoyed it 8/10.

The Game (1997): Wow man this movie was awesome a CLASSIC. One of the best suspense movie I’ve seen. So many twists and turns even in the end. In whole movie i was like NOW WHAT . It started like a boring movie with a boring character. Just have to bear it for 20 minutes or so and after that it builds up intriguingly. A really F****k up movie 9/10.

6/10

Captain Fantastic is story about Ben (viggo) and his pack of children living in wilderness off grid , with home schooling and tough training regime like of military , the kids are book genius but what sad is they dont have any connection to the out side world kind off like cut off from the trends and technology , there mother dies that is where the whole plot of the movie starts , it is a sad and funny story and shows two sides of the world extreme off grid and useless capitalist world that we are living in, the acting is top notch by viggo and some scenes are very emotional .
I have also read lots off people in USA now live off grid and number could be quarter a million soon , while i don't mind off grid but i think there should be a balance b.w off grid and real world

tom hanks and felicitiy jones were good, im amazed once again that irrfan khan got a good amount of time onscreen and had a pivotal role too

Saw "Ouija:eek:rigin of evil" at CINESTAR tonight

Spoiler: show

i'll start with 2016 has been a good year for horror movies, this being one of em

the movie's start is all like pretty slow and steady it goes and than it goes into a bit of a turn and all of a sudden stuff starts to happen here and there and its quite gripping

the first movie was quite dull IMO cheap scares and what not but this one surely has redeemed the franchise back... the actors did a terrific job uplifting the movie, the girl when she made those faces was very VERY CREEPY.

there aren't many jump scares movies like with james wan but man it was scary at times

the ending was quite what it should be aswell :D

there was some goofs or some stuff which felt a bit rushed or not needed but it was overshadowed by the final moments of the movie

Lights Out (2016)

Lights Out is a horror movie about a family, that is being tormented by an entity/ghost. The catch is, it can only appear in the darkness. I was really looking forward to watching this because of its premise. I mean let's face it, fear of the dark is a fundamental fear that everyone experiences atleast once in there life. So a movie centered around something like this genuinely intrigued me.

The cast did a uniformly good job. The kid was good, the mother, the sister, and hell, even the boyfriend. Usually the boyfriend/girlfriend character ends up being just disposable copy paste cliches, but this movie did a good job with the character.

Run-time of the movie is short around 1 hour and 20 mins, so the pacing was fast. You don't have slow periods or long build up periods that horror movies usually have. From the start, shit starts happening. That was both a positive, and a negative for me. On one hand, I enjoyed the fast pacing as it kept me on the hook consistently. But on the other, not enough buildup or breathing room resulted in a far less creepy experience.

I really liked how the ghost was represented. You don't really see anything but the eyes and dark figure, creepily moving around. Yes, there are typical horror moments like noises being heard, door openings etc, but for the most part, this ghost meant business. The movie went overboard with it, however, to the point that it honestly felt more like a monster movie than a horror movie. And this didn't reduce the enjoyment factor, it only made the movie less scary.

The sound design was fantastic, and is probably my favourite thing in the movie. The sounds made my the ghost were unsettling. Surround sound utilization was really well done. There were times where I turned around to see where the sound was coming from, only to find out it was in the movie. Creepy, and awesome. Really good stuff. A surround system watch of this movie is highly recommended.

Coming to the scares, it consisted of jump scares (Of course) and some genuine creepy moments. And this is the thing that I got really disappointed in. This setting is a gold mine. There are so many ways they could have done really creepy stuff, but what I got were a very few of them, and a lot of jump scares, which weren't bad per say, but their presence in something like this felt cheap and easy.

As for negatives, other than the ones already mentioned, the movie sometimes broke its own rule. There were some moments where the entity should not have been able to do stuff because of the light, but it still did.

All in all, this movie no where near utilized the potential of its premise, but still ended up delivering a good watching experience, especially sound wise. So if you like horror movies, I definitely recommend it. This year has been a good one for horror, so far, I have to say. I hope this trend continues.

7.5/10
